The great depression has him searching for work, food, money, and his missing brothers, only to be treated nothing more than an ally dog. It seems his only bet for work is the bustling Tijuana racetrack, the heat of California and Mexico in the 1930's. Lies and deceit gets him up in the saddle controlling 1,450 pounds of bone and sinew, an animal capable of sustaining speeds of up to 40mph. The horse looked back with his rich brown eyes--and it was then that Joe saw something. The colt’s eyes held so much emotion it was like looking through a glass bottle. Inside he saw malice and resentment, but also agony and affliction. He saw a hunger for freedom, to be whom he was meant to be. Free of pressure. It was then that Joe had a sudden understanding for this creature--their histories and minds and thoughts and desires were the same even though they were different species. Both horse and boy suddenly had a connection. It was almost as if, on that first day standing and walking through each other’s minds, they became one. For the first time in years Joe felt something warm spark inside him. For the first time--he felt he was understood. As Joe exited the barn he looked back toward the colt. The colt’s eyes never left him. Joe nodded to him and then walked out. They would meet again.
