Finding Hope - Chapter 1

“Kevin,” a five-month pregnant Danielle Jonas yelled, she was in the kitchen making dinner for her and Kevin.  Her family had moved out of the house a couple of weeks ago, it was nice having them here while Kevin was on tour, but she almost felt confined while they were here.  She loved her family, but she is glad to have some peace and quiet.  It gets very noisy when the Deleasa’s are here.

“Yea honey,” Kevin said as he came over and kissed her.  Dani giggled when Kevin leaned down and kissed her stomach after kissing her.  “What do you need?”

“Can you run downstairs and grab a potato and an onion for me, they are supposed to go in this dish,” Dani said as she was getting ready to press the garlic.

It had been a normal morning routine for a couple of months, or at least when he could fit it in.  When he got home from the gym, he was so tired and hungry and all he wanted to do was eat and take a shower.

However, Dani had different plans for him that morning.  When he came home Dani had put all of his underwear and socks on the table, and well Kevin thought “oh she must be doing laundry.”  Dani had been getting angry at him the past couple of days for no reason and Kevin didn’t know what to think.

“Kevin, can you just put your laundry away,” Dani yelled at him that morning.  He remembered saying he was hungry, and he would do it later, but Dani demanded that he do it right then.  He reluctantly agreed to do it, so upstairs he went, and he opened his sock and underwear drawer to put all of his clothes away.  “What’s this in here,” he said as he was standing looking at the drawer that usually held his underwear and socks, although it was filled with diapers and a bib that said “I love you Daddy,” along with a note that said, “Daddy, can’t wait to meet you in 9 months, Love Baby Jonas.”  He was shocked to say the least and dropped all of his clothes.  “What, you-your pregnant,” he said as he started crying.  He was so overjoyed and so happy.

They had told Dani’s family about a month into the pregnancy.  It had been so hard for Kevin to keep it from his brothers, but they didn’t want to just blurt out the news over the phone.  So, a week later they had told his family when both families went to the Bahamas.

Both families had been so happy when they told them that they were expecting a baby.  The first ultrasound was amazing for both Kevin and Dani, just hearing the little heartbeat for the first time was music to both of their ears.

Dani had some severe morning sickness during the first trimester, she wasn’t able to keep anything down and was constantly running to the bathroom.  She had found that a basic herbal tea and some saltine crackers were the best thing to soothe her stomach.  It unfortunately did not always work, but it worked more times than none.

“Kevin, can you run downstairs and get a potato please, before this is ruined,” Dani said.  She had been very determined to get this meal done right and exactly on time.  She was making a Roasted Herb Chicken and Potato dish that she had found online somewhere.  The picture looked good, so she decided to try it.

“Can you also let the dogs outside before they decide to” it was too late they had already peed on the rug right next to the door.  At least Riley and Maci were at least going to the door half of the time now when they had to go outside.

Kevin and Dani had gotten Riley right after they got married, she had been a late Christmas present for Dani.  Riley wasn’t ready to be adopted on Christmas but about a month later they had adopted her.  She is Dani’s baby.  Whenever something goes wrong, she always runs to Dani first.

About a year and a half later Dani came home from the mall saying that we had to go look at this sweet adorable puppy that was for sale.  So, we went back to the mall and picked up our little Maltese, named Maci.  She was only eight weeks old when they got her and was so precious and tiny, she was the runt of the litter.  She and Kevin watch TV in the mornings, she loves to cuddle with him.

They had troubles training both of the dogs, especially potty training them both.  They had a dog trainer come into their house, actually during the first season of their reality TV show, to help with some training techniques for their dogs.

Kevin had enough of the dogs having accidents in the house one morning.  Maci somehow got behind one of their stand-up decorations in their bedroom and decided to take a dump as Kevin had so nicely called it.

It was after Kevin had flushed Maci’s poop down the toilet that he wanted the black light that some of their friends had given them when they got their first dog, Riley.  It was after he shined the black light on the carpet that Kevin realized that the carpet that he walked on with bare feet had pee all over it.

Kevin hired a dog trainer to come in and train the dogs.  Some of the techniques had worked.  One of the strategies was to keep them locked out of places they didn’t need to go in the house, like spare bedrooms, etc.  It worked for the most part and trained them well enough, but they still had problems when they wanted to go outside.  At least they knew when they had to go out, but they sometimes didn’t make it, or they would stand by the door and do nothing to get anyone’s attention.

“Kevin, go downstairs please and get the stuff I need and then you can come up here and clean up this mess,” Dani said to him.  When he was walking to get the potatoes, he saw something out of the corner of his eye.  He did a double take for a moment, but then realized that there was indeed a little girl who was soaked from the rain outside shivering in their basement.

“Hi, I’m Kevin,” Kevin said gently, trying not to scare the little girl who looked no older than four, a million questions were going through his head, like how did she get in here, where did she come from, and who she was?

“I’m Emma” the little girl said shivering.  She was so cold and just wanted to stay warm and thought that this man would yell at her.  “I just wanted to stay warm,” Emma said quietly.

“Well Miss Emma, how did you get in here?” Kevin asked nicely.  He and his brothers were always nice to their fans.  When they were really big and living out in LA, a couple of fans had found their house and snuck in, when his brothers were there alone.  They didn’t kick them out nor call the police, they just led them out the door after a couple of pictures and autographs.

“The door, I was cold,” Emma shivered.  Kevin looked at the little girl who was shivering and way underweight and decided right then that he would take care of her the best he could like she was his own daughter.

“Kevin, what is taking you so long,” Dani yelled down the stairs, he was only supposed to go get a potato and an onion and that was it.  The noise of Dani calling downstairs made little Emma jump and cower back in the corner.

“Come on Emma, let’s go upstairs,” Kevin said as he reached out for her to take his hand.  This man was nice enough, so Emma went up to him and instead of taking his hand, she put her arms up as a cue that she wanted him to carry her.

Kevin picked her up and she laid her head on his shoulder.  She had been running for who knows how long, and her little legs were tired from running.

When Kevin got upstairs, he saw Dani standing there with a very perturbed face.  “Kevin, what is going on?” Dani said when she saw the child that Kevin was carrying.

“Oh, this is Emma,” Kevin said as she started squiggling in his arms, so Kevin let her down, she however stayed close to Kevin and just looked around.

“Where did you come from Emma?” Dani asked as she leaned down to speak to her.  She couldn’t get down on her knees because she was pregnant and didn’t really want to fall over.

“A dirty loud van,” Emma said.  This made Kevin and Dani both exchange a look, she had clothes on that were torn, dirty, had blood on them, and were wet.

“How did you get here?” Dani asked Emma.

“I got out of the van,” was all Emma said before she turned quiet again and continued to look around at the big house.

“I don’t think I introduced myself, I’m Dani,” Dani said as she leaned down and looked at the little girl who was covered in mud and blood.

“Come on let’s get you changed and in some warm clothes honey,” Dani said as she took her hand and led her to the bathroom.

“Now do you have to go potty,” Dani asked the little girl when they got to the bathroom, before she helped take off all of her clothes.  The little girl shook her head and let Dani help take off her clothes.  Dani was shocked to see bruises lining the little girl’s body.

When Dani saw the bruises, she wasn’t sure what to do.  She wasn’t sure if she should call the police or not.  She decided to ask her though, “Emma honey, what happened?” she asked in a way that hopefully wouldn’t scare her.

“Sir beat me,” was all Emma said.  Just the statement that came out of little Emma’s mouth made Dani scared.  Some of the bruises looked brand new, like they were from today or even a couple of hours ago.

“Come on let’s get you in some comfy clothes, can you stay here while I go get you some nice comfy clothes?” Dani sad as the little girl nodded.

Dani wanted to talk to Kevin also about what they should do.  She made a stop in the kitchen to get Kevin before going upstairs to their bedroom.

“Kevin, Emma has bruises all over her body,” Dani said, as she went to Kevin’s closet and pulled out a big old sweatshirt, “can she wear this?”

“Did she say how she got them?” Kevin asked as he nodded indicating that Dani could use the sweatshirt for Emma.

“She said that a person named, Sir, beat her.  I’m assuming she lived with him.  Some look new and others look old, I don’t know where this old van is,” Dani said frazzled.

“Calm down baby, we will figure it all out,” Kevin said as he came up and hugged her.

Meanwhile Emma was standing in the bathroom freezing cold and all wet still form being outside.  She had to go potty now, but she knew she would get in trouble for going without permission.  So, she held it and when the door opened again to reveal Dani with a nice big comfy shirt she got scared and started peeing.  She then looked up at Dani knowing that she would yell at her and beat her up, like Sir did.  However, that didn’t happen.

Dani went into the bathroom to find Emma standing there in that same position looking very cold and chilly.  The door opening must have scared her because Dani looked down at her and noticed that she was peeing on the floor.  “Oh honey, it is okay, shhh,” Dani said when the little girl started crying.

“I didn’t want to get in trouble, but I am already in big trouble, I am sorry,” Emma cried.

“Now why would you get in trouble?” Dani wondered.

“I went pee-pee all over.  I’m not allowed to use the potty and when I do, Sir sits on me while I am on the potty,” Emma whispered.

Dani was again shocked to hear what was coming out of this little girl’s mouth.  No one should not be allowed to use the bathroom that is just cruel.

“Do you have to go potty anymore Emma?” Dani didn’t want her to have another accident or not know where the potty was, so she wanted to make sure.

Emma nodded but then just stood there and cried.  She had to go potty but didn’t want to be sat on while she was going.  “Come on Emma,” Dani said as she lifted her up onto the toilet and held her while she pooped.

Author's Notes:

Gosh, I wrote this part of the story so long ago!  Like early 2014 probably!

Finding Hope – Chapter 2

It was later that night and Emma had crashed on the couch snuggled up in between Kevin and Dani.  Emma was so tired and looked like an angel sleeping there in between them.

“What should we do?” Kevin asked as he looked down at the little girl that touched his heart, he didn’t think he could ever get rid of her.  She was so sweet and precious.  It is unbelievable how sweet she actually is.

“I don’t know, I mean I don’t want to call the police and report her missing, but I think we have to.” Dani was having the same feelings about Emma that Kevin was, she didn’t want to give her up either.

Kevin was already thinking that they could adopt her.  From what Dani told him he knew they would be able to give her a much better home.  She was scared to death of getting in trouble.  At first, she didn’t want to eat at the table for dinner.  It took some coaxing, but she finally sat at the table with them, but when she did, she hardly ate anything and only ate after they had started eating.

“I think we should call the police and have them come and take a look at her, who knows we might even be able to adopt her, if the circumstances are right,” Dani thought out loud.

Kevin pulled out his phone and called the non-emergency police number and told them the situation.  “Hi, my wife and I found a little girl in our basement tonight, and thought that we should report it,” Kevin said into the phone, praying that they didn’t have to give her up.

“Okay Sir, we will come in about an hour,” the police chief said after he took Kevin’s address and information and then hung up the phone.

“They will be here in an hour,” Kevin sighed.  He really did not want to do this.  He just wanted to adopt and keep her.  He was hoping the police would just let them keep her.

“Emma, wake up,” Kevin said as he smoothed her greasy hair out of her face, so she could somewhat see.

“Yea,” Emma said as she stretched and woke up some more.  This is when she realized that she had to go potty, but she didn’t want to ask so she just sort-of sat there wiggling, but she couldn’t hold it for very long because soon she went potty all over the couch and floor.

“Please don’t hit me, please don’t hit me, please don’t hit me,” Emma keeps on repeating when she had realized what she had done.

“Emma, what’s wrong?” Dani said as she looked over at her from where she and Kevin were talking.

“I went poops not on the potty but don’t hit me please, I didn’t mean too, please don’t hit me,” Emma cried.

“Emma, shhh, it is okay accidents happen, shhh, let’s get you to the potty though,” Dani said soothingly.  “Come on Emma,” Dani said as she held her hand out to her and led her upstairs to Kevin and Dani’s master bathroom.  She was going to give Emma a bath and it seemed just as easy to do it in the bathtub.

“Emma do you have to go potty anymore?” Dani asked the little girl who was following her, when she nodded Dani pulled down her underwear and sat her on the toilet and again held her while she pooped.

They didn’t have a potty chair or anything like that.  Dani had thrown out all of her clothes except for her underwear the last time she went to the bathroom.  She now didn’t have any underwear either, she would just have to go commando tonight.

“Come on, Emma, let’s get you all clean,” Dani said as she lifted Emma into the bathtub for her bath after she was done going potty.  She had found a plastic cup that she gave Emma to play with while she cleaned her up and she talked to her too.

“Emma, what is your favorite color?” was the first question that Dani asked Emma who looked at her confused, and said, “what’s color, are you going to hurt me with it?”

“Oh Emma, I didn’t mean it like that,” Dani said shocked that Emma would not know what her favorite color was or what a color even was.

Emma then went back to playing with her plastic cup that Dani had given her to play with.  When Dani was scrubbing Emma’s back, Emma started crying.  “Emma did I hurt you, I am so sorry baby,” Dani said as she looked at the little girl who was crying.

“What’s wrong Emma,” Dani asked the little girl who was now gasping for air because she was crying so hard.  This made Dani get really scared that she hurt her or something because she wouldn’t answer.  Dani looked at Emma’s back to find multiple lashes on her back.  She looked like she had been hit with a rope or a belt.

“Emma, did I hurt you, Mommy is so sorry,” Dani said but then realized what she said, she didn’t want Emma to get the wrong idea, but she was really worried and nervous.

Emma was still sobbing when Dani had rinsed Emma off and was lifting her out of the tub and wrapped her in a big fluffy white towel.  Emma just cried and cried while Dani was drying her off.

At one point while Dani was drying off Emma, she was afraid she might actually make herself sick.  Emma finally stopped crying and let Dani dress her in another big comfy shirt of Kevin’s.

Dani didn’t know how to explain to Emma that the police were going to come check her out without scaring her even more.  “Emma, there are some people that are going to come visit us in a while.”

“Ares they goings to hurts me,” Emma asked in fear.  She was afraid that some of Sir’s friends were going to come and beat her.  Sir used to always say that there were people who were going to visit and then they would always come and hurt her.

“No honey,” Dani said as she took Emma’s hand and walked out of the bathroom with her and lifted her up onto her and Kevin’s bed.  “The police are nice people; they won’t hurt you.”

“Okay, are you sure, because whenever Sir had people over, they always gave me owies and then they would laugh at me when I started to cry’s,” Emma said nervously.

“Oh Emma, I am so sorry that all of that has happened to you,” Dani said.  No child should have to go through any of that.  It made Dani sick to think that someone could do this to a child or anyone.

“Come on let’s go downstairs and see what Daddy is doing,” Dani said but then regretted it even more then when she had said it earlier before Emma was crying and she didn’t think she actually heard her but now she was sure that she had heard her.

“Can you be my Daddy?” Emma asked Kevin, “you give me food and are nice to me.  Sir is mean to me and hits me with his belts and sometimes he gets a rope and hits me with that.”

Both Kevin and Dani looked at each other, they were shocked at what was coming out of this little girl’s mouth.  Dani was the only one who had seen the lashes and bruises that covered her tiny body.

The doorbell rang and Emma jumped onto Kevin’s lap.  She was still scared even though Dani had told her that no one bad was coming only nice people were coming, but she wasn’t sure if she could trust them yet or not.  Kevin went and answered the door while holding Emma who was shaking and scared.

When Emma saw the police, she hid her face in Kevin’s shirt and just shook.  She was so scared.  “Come inside,” Kevin said, he could feel Emma shaking underneath of him.

“Shhh, it is okay,” Kevin whispered into her ear as he led the police to their living room where they sat down on the couch.

The police asked where they found Emma, what Emma was like when they found her, and all sorts of other questions.  When they found out that Emma had been abused, they asked to see the wounds.

“Emma, they want to see your owies,” Kevin told the little girl who was scared to death.  “Do you think you can show them?”

Emma just shook her head into Kevin’s shirt and started to cry.  Kevin rubbed her back while he stood up and went into the kitchen, he could tell that she was scared to death of the police and that made him feel awful.

“Emma, we have to show the nice people in there your owies,” Kevin said after Emma had calmed down and was no longer crying.  Emma finally agreed to show them her owies, but she still wasn’t too sure if she could trust this family or not yet.

Kevin sat Emma down and took off the shirt that she was wearing very carefully and slowly.  Kevin hadn’t seen Emma without a shirt or anything on, so he was shocked and felt awful.  They then walked into the living room, where the police and Dani were sitting.  When the police saw all of the bruises and scars, they were shocked to see the scars.

After Kevin had put Emma’s shirt back on, the police started questioning Emma.  “Emma where did you come from,” the nice police lady asked her.

“An old, dirty van, Sir yelled at me and said lots of naughty words,” Emma said as she climbed into Kevin’s lap and snuggled into him.

“Did he ever hurt you,” the policeman asked.  He scared Emma a little bit, he was scary looking.

“Yea he hit me.  I don’t want to go back there,” Emma said as she started crying again.

“Emma, do you like Kevin and Dani,” the police asked Emma.  They wanted to know if she liked them.

“Yea, they are nice, they give me food, and don’t sit on me when I am going potty,” Emma said.  Kevin knew that they were helping this little girl out, but he didn’t know that this supposed Sir sat on her when she was going to the bathroom.  That is just sick.

“How would you like to live with Kevin and Dani,” the policewoman asked Emma who snuggled into Kevin and nodded.

“Would you guys like to adopt her,” the police asked Kevin and Dani.  Kevin and Dani looked at each other and both said yes at the same time.  Emma squealed when she heard both yeses from them.

“Okay, you won’t be able to adopt her yet, but if you pass the state visit then you will be able to adopt her,” the police said as they handed a business card to Dani.

“Call this number on Monday and ask to talk to Claire Organic and she will set up a time to have someone come out next week, she will explain the process more but you both need to be here when the state comes,” the policewoman said.  They walked them out and then turned to Emma who was now smiling, the first smile they had seen out of her.

All of them went to bed happy that night, Emma snuggled up in the middle of Kevin and Dani.  However, around 2:00 a.m., Emma woke up and started crying.  Both Kevin and Dani sat up at the same time and hugged Emma, “honey what is wrong,” Dani said.

“Scary dream,” Emma said.  “Sir was hitting me with his rope and he then tied me to a chair while he kicked me in the head and then I went to sleep and didn’t wake up for a longs time.”

Kevin looked at Dani, they were both shocked at what was coming out of Emma’s mouth.  “Emma did this happen to you?” Kevin said as he turned on the bedside light.

“Mommy it scary, he hurted me,” Emma clutched onto Dani and started shaking.  “Emma honey, are you cold?” Dani asked as she pulled the blankets up over her and Emma some more.

“Shhh, try to get some sleep,” Dani said as she rocked her.  Emma was soon sound asleep on Dani.  Dani moved her onto the bed and then she got up and motioned for Kevin to get up too.  “Baby is hungry, and I want to talk to you,” Dani said as she walked downstairs into the kitchen with Kevin following.

“I don’t know about keeping Emma,” Dani said to Kevin while she was raiding the fridge for a snack.  “I just don’t know about how it is going to work out.  I guess I am scared and don’t know what to do about her.”

“Dani, we have to keep her,” Kevin said, “if we don’t keep her, she is going to go back to the man who is going to hurt her even more or kill her.  Don’t you love her, you were the one that mentioned telling the police even though you didn’t want to give her up and that we might be able to adopt her.”

“Of course, I love her and want to keep her but what she just said up there is what scared me, what if I’m not ready to have a kid, what if I can’t handle a kid with all of these problems, what if, I don’t even know,” Dani said as she started crying.

“Oh Dani,” Kevin said as he went and hugged her.  “It is going to take some work, but I know you are going to be a perfect Mommy to Emma and the baby.”

“But what if I am not,” Dani said, “what if I mess up or do something to hurt Emma.”

“You won’t and if you do, I know that little girl loves us to pieces already, I am sure she will forgive you,” Kevin said, “Now let’s go back upstairs and get some sleep.  What you did up there with her when she was crying is what she needs,” Kevin said as they snuck into the room and crawled into bed with Emma and fell asleep.

Emma woke up around 5:45 a.m. again.  This time she had to go potty, but she didn’t want to go alone.  So, she decided to wake up Kevin, “Daddy, I have to poops,” Emma said as she gently shook him.

Kevin woke up to Emma shaking him, “Emma what do you want,” Kevin said as he tickled her.  Emma giggled as she said, “I go poops.”

Her Daddy stood up and then picked her up out of bed and took her to the bathroom where he sat her on the toilet and held onto her as she grunted, “it hurt Daddy,” Emma said through her tears.  Her poops had never felt this way before, she had to go but they hurt when they came out.

“Owies,” Emma yelled as one poop came out and landed in the toilet.  She was back to grunting after that some more.

“Emma, shhh,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back.  Maybe that would help her calm down.

“Daddy, it hurts,” Emma cried as she reached out for Kevin.  “Are you done honey,” Kevin asked her.  Emma nodded as another poop plopped into the toilet.  “Oh honey, let’s wait a couple more minutes,” Kevin said as he held on to her.  He felt really bad for her, she was in obvious pain and just wanted to be done.

She grunted for a couple more minutes and when the last one was out, she just cried.  “Daddy, it hurted,” Emma cried as she reached out for him.  Kevin had her stand up and wiped her with toilet paper, then he got a washcloth out of the cupboard in the bathroom and wiped her face and her nose before he wiped her bottom.

“Daddy, my tummies hurted,” Emma cried after Kevin was done getting her cleaned up.  She just wanted to cuddle and feel better.

“Emma does your tummy still hurt,” Kevin said as he kneeled down and put his hand on her chest.  Emma just nodded as she cried some more.  “Emma do you feel like you have to throw up?” Kevin asked the little girl or just shook her head no.

“Okay let’s go back to sleep and cuddle,” Kevin said as he picked up the little girl with tears still dripping down her cheeks and went out into the bedroom, he first laid Emma on the bed and then he crawled into bed and snuggled up with her before they both fell into a deep sleep.

Kevin and Dani both woke up before little Emma did.  After waking up twice last night, they both let her sleep and went to make breakfast for the little family of three.  They made pancakes, bacon, and sausage.

“Come on Emma, let’s wake up,” Dani said as she combed her hands through Emma’s hair.  Emma woke up, stretched, and said, “Good morning Mommy.”

“Good morning my little Emma Bug, now let’s go downstairs and get some breakfast before Daddy eats it all,” Dani said as she got off of the bed and headed towards the door to find that Emma was still sitting on the bed.

“Emma come on, do you want Daddy to eat all of your breakfast for you,” Dani said as she tried to get her out of bed.

“No,” Emma said as she started crying and curled up in a little ball.  Dani came over, sat on the bed, and rubbed her back while she cried.  Emma crawled over and sat on Dani’s lap.  “Come on I’ll carry you,” Dani said as she picked Emma up and took her downstairs.

“Hey guys, Kevin said, but then he noticed that she was crying.

“Is she okay,” Kevin mouthed to Dani.

“I don’t know she has been crying since I told her that we were going to go downstairs for breakfast before Daddy eats it all,” Dani said out loud as she looked down at Emma who had tears dripping down her cheeks.

“Emma honey does your tummy still hurt,” Kevin asked the little girl who just shook her head and continued to cry.  Her tummy hurt this morning, but it wasn’t hurting now.

“Shhh,” Kevin said as he took her out of Dani’s arms and hugged her.  Emma grasped onto Kevin and just sobbed into his shirt making it wet with her tears.

“Shhh,” Kevin said as he walked around the kitchen singing something soft to her.  She finally stopped crying and fell asleep on Kevin’s shoulder.

As Kevin and Dani ate their breakfast, they talked about what they were going to do today, “I want to get her some stuff,” Dani said as she got up to get a pen and paper to make a list.  Dani made a long list of everything they needed which included clothes, a potty chair, and a car seat.

Emma woke up while they were talking about the plans for the day.  “Emma honey, do you want to eat something and then we are going to go shopping,” Kevin said to the little girl in his lap who was very interested in Kevin’s plate of food.

“What do you want,” Kevin said as he grabbed Emma’s plate and started filling it up with stuff that she said she wanted.  While Dani cut up Emma’s food they talked about where they were going to go to get all of this stuff they needed and made a plan.

“Okay so we need to go to the shoe store, go shopping for clothes, and get you a car seat, how does that sound Emma,” Dani said to the little girl who was now eating her food.

Finding Hope – Chapter 3

They were in the car not more than twenty minutes later.  Dani was sitting in the back with Emma just in case something happened.  Luckily, nothing did happen, and they got to the mall safely.  As soon as Kevin picked up Emma, she grasped onto him and didn’t want to let go.

All three of them walked into the mall and first went and got shoes for little Emma.  “Yea we need some help determining a shoe size,” Dani said as Kevin sat Emma down on the stool.  A nice salesman came over with a shoe sizing chart.

“What is your name?” the nice man in his thirties asked Emma.

          “Emma,” she said very quietly.

“Well Emma let’s put your foot here and we will get your foot sized,” the nice man said as he took her foot and put it on the shoe sizing chart.  Emma of course started crying, but then Kevin sat down next to her and held her hand, he talked to her while the man was measuring her feet.

“Daddy,” Emma said as tears were dripping down her face.

          “Yes, baby girl,” Kevin said.

“Let’s see your shoe size is between a 9 and a 9½, let me bring back some of both sizes for you,” the nice salesman said as he got up and went looking for shoes.

“Emma what do you need,” Kevin said as Emma scurried into his lap and sobbed.

“Scary,” Emma said as she continued to sob.  The nice man looked like one of the people that came to the dirty van and hurt her once.

“Oh honey, shhh, it is okay, shhh,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back to get her calmed down.

“Pee-pees,” Emma said as she squirmed in Kevin’s lap.  “Poops too,” Emma sniffled.

“Dani, she has to go to the bathroom,” Kevin said as he stood up with her and handed her over to Dani so she could take her to the bathroom.

They were the only ones in the bathroom so when they got there, they chose the biggest stall so that way Dani and Emma could get in there together.

“Hurry, I poop they come outs,” Emma said as she stood there waiting for her mom to put down the toilet lid for her to sit on.

“Hold this up for Mommy,” Dani said as she picked her up.  Right as she picked her up some poop started come out.  Dani got her over the toilet though before any could escape and fall on the floor though.

“There you go Emma,” Dani said as the little girl started going to the bathroom.

“I’m done Mommy,” Emma said after she was done.  “Did you go pee-pees Emma,” Dani asked her.  She didn’t want to have to take her to the potty again in five minutes if at all possible, she wanted her to go now.

“No, I’m I suppose to goes pee-pees,” Emma asked.  She didn’t know why her mom had asked her that question.

“Do you have to go pee-pees,” Dani asked the little girl who just nodded her head, “but they don’t want to come outs,” Emma said.

“Can you try for me, maybe they will come out if you think about it really hard?” Dani told Emma.

She started thinking about it really hard and in about thirty seconds, “Mommy they are comings outs,” Emma yelled excited.

“Shhh,” Dani said to Emma.  The whole restroom didn’t need to hear that but of course they did now.

“I’m all done,” Emma said as Dani lifted her off the toilet and wiped her with some toilet paper, she then picked her up, they washed their hands, and then left the bathroom.

When they got back to the shoe store they tried on the shoes and then they let Emma pick the shoes that she wanted to wear today.  She could pick between a pair of light up shoes, sneakers, and a nicer pair of dress up shoes.

“These ones,” Emma said as she pointed at the light up shoes that were purple with red lights on them.  They were Velcro shoes too.

After they got her shoes, they headed to the store that had car seats and strollers.  “Kevin should we get a double stroller that way we can have both Emma and the baby in it when the time comes,” Dani said as she looked at the stroller options.

“Why don’t we, even if we don’t use the double stroller a lot, we can still bring it with us when we go places, that way if Emma gets tired, we can always put her in there,” Kevin said as he looked at the strollers with Dani.

“I saw a dad the other day that had two kids, one was Emma’s age, and the other was a baby in a car seat, and he had the car seat in the front one and the older one in the back, because you know how most parents put the younger one up by them and the older one in the front, anyways I thought that would be a good idea,” Dani rambled on.

“After all of that are you trying to say that we should get a stroller that allows both seats to carry a car seat,” Kevin said as he looked at his wife amused.

“Yes,” Dani laughed as she turned around to see Emma looking at the car seats.  She was standing by a yellow and gray striped one looking up at it.  “Emma is that the car seat that you want,” Dani asked her daughter.  It was killing her to not know what her baby was.  If they knew she would buy a car seat for the baby now too, that was until Dani got an idea.

“Kevin, look they have a deal on any double stroller if you buy any two car seats with it,” Dani had seen that sign above the car seat that Emma was looking at.  “Twin Days buy any double stroller and any car seat and get the second car seat half off,” Kevin read.  He had seen the sign too.

After they bought the stroller and the two car seats, Kevin decided that he was going to go set up the car seat in the car.  Dani and Emma set off to go shopping for clothes.

As they were waiting at the register, after Dani brought Emma a whole wardrobe of clothes, Dani’s phone buzzed with a text.  Dani pulled out her phone and checked who the text was from.  “It’s from Daddy, he says he is hungry and is waiting in the food court for us to meet him,” Dani informed Emma.

When they were done checking out, they headed down to the food court where Dani saw Kevin taking pictures with some fans.  Dani signaled to Kevin that she and Emma were going to go in the store that had sunglasses.  “Come on honey, let’s go in here and try on sunglasses,” Dani said.  Emma didn’t know who her Daddy was yet.  They had to tell her eventually, maybe this coming week.  Kevin just nodded his head as Emma and Dani disappeared into a Sunglasses Hut.

It was easier to have a signal sometimes if Kevin was meeting with fans to not have Dani come up and say hi too, because then they would freak out even more or faint.  They had one experience like that.  Kevin and Dani were out at a mall once right after they got married and Kevin was meeting a fan and Dani came up behind them and well the poor girl fainted.

“Why are there peoples with Daddy,” Emma said bringing Dani out of her thoughts.  Dani didn’t know how to answer that, so she distracted her for right now with looking at the sunglasses.

Kevin came in a couple minutes later, “come on let’s get out of here.  The food court is packed with fans today,” Kevin said.  Kevin carried Emma and Dani walked beside them holding onto Kevin’s hand.  They went out the same door that they came in.  By the time the family of three got to the car, Emma was sound asleep in Kevin’s arms.  Kevin got out his keys, opened the car, set Emma in her car seat, and strapped her in without waking her up.

“Why don’t we just go home, that way Emma can take a nap and we can have lunch,” Kevin said.

“Yea, I will come in and eat a quick lunch but then I have to still run to Target and get some shampoo and stuff for Emma,” Dani said.

“Actually, why don’t we just go to Target right now, we can do it in half of the time, and we can take Emma in with us, she can sleep in the cart,” Kevin said as he pulled into the Target parking lot.

“Okay, that works,” Dani said as she got out of the car and went to grab a cart as Kevin got Emma out of the car.  With teamwork they both got Emma into the cart without waking her up.

“We should get Emma a little pillow or something for her head, it looks uncomfortable,” Kevin said as he looked at his daughter, that is if the paperwork and meetings worked out.

“Yea that will be our first stop to find a small pillow for her head,” Dani said.  She agreed, she did look very uncomfortable, maybe a pillow would make her look more comfortable.  They found her a travel pillow that had a magnet closure for her chin.  Dani went and bought it while Kevin started looking for a child’s toilet seat to go on the toilet.  Dani came back with it in three minutes.  Again, with teamwork they put it around her neck without waking her up.

Half an hour later they were heading to the checkout with a sleeping Emma and a cart full of stuff they needed.  When they got up to the checkout counter Emma started waking up.  They were both putting stuff on the counter so Emma couldn’t see them, this made her freak out and start to cry right away.  She thought that her parents had abandoned her.

Kevin put the paper towels on the counter and came over to check on Emma.  She started reaching out for him as soon as she saw him.  Kevin took off her head pillow threw it in the cart and picked her up out of the cart.

“Emma can you help Mommy set the table,” Dani said as she handed Emma three big white glass plates that night before dinner.  Emma walked over to the table slowly but just as she was about to get there, she dropped the plates.  All three of them shattered and Emma started crying.

The loud crash made Kevin come out of wherever he was.  He found Emma standing there sobbing.  “Em are you hurt,” Kevin asked as he walked around the table and picked her up, being careful of the glass.

“Emma, shhh,” Kevin said as he sat her on the counter to look at her feet.  “Shhh, you’re fine,” Kevin said as he picked her up again.  She clutched on to him and started sobbing.

“Here Dani let me do that, you take Emma,” Kevin said as he handed her Emma who clutched on to Dani and just sobbed.  Dani went and sat down with her on the couch in the living room.

Emma sobbed for an hour straight.  It was while Emma was sobbing that Dani realized that tomorrow was Sunday, and that the Sunday lunch was at their house.

“Kevin,” Dani called out to her husband who was stirring the potatoes.

“Yea what do you need,” Kevin said as Dani walked into the kitchen carrying a sound asleep Emma in her arms.

“I am going to put her upstairs and then we will have dinner,” Dani said as she turned and went upstairs to get Emma ready for bed.  She tried to half wake Emma up so she could go potty, but Emma didn’t want to wake up.  Dani saw some pull ups at Target, and she picked up a pack of them because even though she didn’t wet the bed last night who knows if it would happen.  Dani got Emma undressed and then put the pull-up on, her pajamas, and covered her up.  Emma put her thumb in her mouth and started sucking it.

“Good night Emma,” Dani said as she left the master bedroom quietly.  She then went downstairs and into the kitchen where her husband was, he was just setting the table.

“Is she asleep,” Kevin asked as they sat down at the table and said grace and then dished up some food for him and Dani.

“So, what did you need to talk to me about?” Kevin said as he took a bite of his food.

“Well, I realized that tomorrow is Sunday which means that we have church in the morning and then brunch is at our house.”

“So,” Kevin said not getting the reason at all for his wife’s explanation that it was Sunday and that they had church and then brunch at the house afterwards.

“It’s Emma, we just can’t leave her upstairs all day tomorrow we have to introduce her to my family tomorrow,” Dani said to him.

“Good point,” Kevin said as he pondered what to do.

“I don’t think it would be a good idea to take her to church, I think it is a better idea for my family to find out about her here rather than at church,” Dani said.

“Yea that’s a good idea but what do we tell your parents then, we can’t tell them that one of us is sick because then they won’t want to come over,” Kevin joked.

“Why don’t we just tell them that we won’t be able to make it to church in the morning, but they can still come over here,” Dani said as she stood up to get the phone to make the phone call.

Once that was done, Kevin went up and checked on Emma, who he found in the master suite sound asleep.  “Emma,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back for her to wake up.  Once she was half awake, Kevin said, “honey do you want some dinner, before bed.”  Emma nodded and reached out for Kevin.  He picked her up and they started walking downstairs.  This is when Kevin felt something warm and mushy on his arm and noticed the smell of poop coming from Emma.

“Emma did you poop, Kevin said as he sat her down by the bed as Kevin stood her by the bed and pulled down her pants and then tore the pull up off.  Kevin had to plug his nose it was such a bad smell, and it was all over the diaper and her little bottom.

“Emma stays here, Daddy is going to get a warm washcloth to clean you up, okay,” Kevin said as he went into the bathroom and got a warm washcloth, came back, and started cleaning her up.  When he was done, he found the pull-ups on the side table next to the bed.  He had her step into the pull up on and took her downstairs to eat some dinner.

“Hi Mommy,” Emma said as she smiled at her.  Kevin sat Emma down in the chair next to Dani and got Emma a plate of food.  “Other than Emma pooped in her pull up when we were walking downstairs everything was easy,” Kevin said as looked over at Emma who was very interested in the table at the moment.

“Emma you have to tell Mommy or Daddy when you have to do a pee-pee or poops, the pull-ups are just there in case you have an accident when you are sleeping okay, but if you are awake, you have to tell one of us if you have to pee or poop,” Dani said gently to Emma who looked up at her and nodded her head.

“I went pee-pees,” Emma said as she looked up at her parents who were looking at her in shock to what she just did, when they were just telling her she couldn’t go potty in her pull up.

“Okay that is it Emma, you are obviously not getting it, timeout now in that corner,” Kevin said to her and pointed to the corner of the kitchen.  Emma got a fearful look on her face and started crying.  When she wouldn’t move, Kevin picked her up, but Emma got out of his grasp and ran.

“Emma come back here, do you want your timeout doubled,” Kevin yelled at her but when she didn’t come back, he started going after her.

“Kevin, let me talk to her,” Dani said as she put her arm in front of him to stop him from running after Emma.  Dani heard the basement door slam right then.  When Dani got downstairs, she heard sobs coming from the corner of the basement.

“Emma,” Dani said as she came over to her and got down on the ground.  “What’s wrong,” she said to her once she was on the floor.  Emma hurdled into Dani as she started sobbing.  “What’s wrong Emma Bug?” Dani asked her.

          “Timeout scary,” Emma said.

“Why do you think the timeout is scary,” Dani asked her.  She thought that talking about it would help her calm down maybe.

“Because Sir would give me timeouts all the time and he would tie me to a chair in the old dirty bus and leave me there for a really long time,” Emma said.

“Oh Emma,” Dani said.  She wanted to cry for the little girl in her arms right now.  She had an awful life, every new thing they did with her made her scared or cry.

“Come on honey, let’s go upstairs and finish dinner,” Dani said as she stood up with Emma in her arms.  They headed upstairs to see Kevin cleaning up from dinner.  He had left Emma’s plate out on the table for her to eat when she got back with his wife.

“Emma, Daddy is so sorry for making you upset,” Kevin said as he squatted down to talk to her.  Emma just nodded and hugged him.  That is all it took for Kevin to realize that no matter what he did, he would still be loved by his little girl.

“I sleepy Daddy,” Emma said as she closed her eyes, laid her head on his shoulders.

“Emma come on let’s finish eating dinner before bedtime,” Kevin asked the little girl that was almost asleep in his arms.  As Kevin set Emma in her chair, she seemed to wake up again.  As Emma ate, Kevin and Dani talked with her.

Once she was done eating, “Sleepy time yet?” Emma asked as she looked up at Kevin who nodded his head.  Emma held her arms up, but Kevin stopped her, “Go say good night to Mommy and then I will carry you upstairs.”

Emma ran over to Dani and told her good night before running over to Kevin with her arms up in the air, indicating that she wanted to be picked up again.  Kevin picked her up and took her upstairs.  He took off her pull-up and sat her on the new potty seat for her to do a pee-pee before bed.

When she was done Kevin had a new pull-up ready for her.  He helped her step into it and pulled up her pajama pants and then picked her up and put her in bed.  Kevin kissed her head good night and left the room quietly.

“Hey, she is out,” Kevin said as he sat down next to his wife who was on the couch.  “I feel awful about tonight, I didn’t mean to scare her,” Kevin said.  His heart broke in half when he saw her run-away from him.  He never wanted to scare her.

“She’s fine but I think we need to come up with a different term other than timeout, she told me tonight that Sir used to give her timeouts and tie her to a chair and leave her there for a long time,” Dani said.

“What about corner time instead of timeout,” Kevin said.  “My parents used to call “timeouts,” corner time sometimes, it just depended on the child and the circumstance.”

“That might work,” Dani said, “I think we should talk to her about it though.”

Finding Hope – Chapter 4

The next morning came early for the small Jonas family.  Riley and Maci who slept at the end of the bed woke up extra early and started kissing Kevin to get up.

“Riley, Maci, go back to bed,” Kevin groaned.  They didn’t have to be up for anything this morning.  The only thing they had to be up for was Dani’s family was coming over after church was done which was probably going to be around noon.  Riley and Maci wanted to play and not go to sleep, so Kevin got up with them and took them outside.  Once they were done with their business, he went back upstairs and found Emma sitting up crying quietly.

“Emma, what’s wrong?” Kevin said as he scooped her up in his arms.  Kevin took her downstairs; he didn’t want her to wake up Dani.

“Now tell Daddy, what’s wrong?” Kevin asked his little princess once they were downstairs in the living room sitting on the couch.

“Scary,” was all Emma said as she cowered into Kevin some more.

“What was scary, princess,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back.

“Sir, he kicked me in the head, and I didn’t wake up,” Emma said scared.

Kevin was shocked about what was coming out of her mouth, “oh Emma,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back and let her cry into him.  It was the only thing he could do at the moment.  If he ever saw this “Sir,” he would hurt him to the point where he would have internal bleeding and hopefully die.

“Come on let’s get some breakfast,” Kevin said after she had stopped crying.  “Okay,” Emma said as she and Kevin went into the kitchen and got her a bowl of cereal.

“After you are done with that, you need a bath, you didn’t have one yesterday,” Kevin said to little Emma as he gave her a bowl of cereal to which she ate in no time.

“Whoa, slow down honey, I don’t want you getting sick,” Kevin said to the little girl who was done in no time.  This was the fastest Kevin had seen Emma eat.

When Emma was done, she waited for Kevin to take her bowl and then they both went upstairs to a guest room.  Kevin sat Emma on the bed and then left to go get her clothes and potty seat.

“Emma, do you have to go potty?” Kevin asked his little girl as he took down her pants and removed her pull-up.  Emma just nodded her head and Kevin sat her on the potty.  When he came back, he gave Emma a bath and put her in clean clothes.

“Mommy,” Emma called out as she saw her heading downstairs, she was ready for the day too.  The only one not ready for the day in the Jonas family was Kevin.

“Come on let’s let Daddy get ready for the day and we will go downstairs and watch TV?  How does that sound Emma Bug,” Dani said as she took her from Kevin who was holding her?

Emma reached out for Dani who took her out of Kevin’s arms and walked downstairs with her.  She set her on the couch in front of the TV.  She then went over to the TV channel guide and looked for a kid friendly channel, which just happened to be Disney Channel.  She turned it on, and the first season of JONAS was playing reruns.

“Daddy?” Emma said confused as she started to cry.  Dani quickly shut the TV off and came over and sat by her on the couch and gave her a hug while she rubbed her back.

“Em, what’s wrong?” Dani asked her, all she did was cower into Dani even more.  She just continued to cry, “Daddy scary,” Emma said.

“Oh honey,” Dani said as she rubbed her back.  Kevin came down right then, “hey guys,” Kevin said.  He was dressed in dark jeans and a blue dress shirt.  He then noticed that Emma was crying, “Em what’s wrong?”

“Daddy,” Emma said as she turned around and clutched on to him, “Daddy scary sometimes though,” Emma said as she laid her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes.

“Emma what do you mean I am scary?” Kevin said.  He had never scared her, or he thought he hadn’t.

“On the TV,” Emma said as she pointed to the TV, “you disappeared and screamed a lot with other people,” Emma said describing the scene where Kevin, Joe, and Stella, are screaming into the camera on the Haunted House Jonas episode.

“Halloween Jonas,” Dani mouthed to Kevin who nodded his head, he now understood why she was scared.

“Emma, you know what that wasn’t real, that was just pretend,” Kevin said as he stood up with her in his arms and rubbed her back.

“Okay, Daddy,” Emma said as she swallowed.

“Emma can Mommy and Daddy talk to you for a minute,” Dani said.  Kevin and Dani had talked last night about how to tell her about Dani’s family and the most important one telling Dani’s family about Emma.  They finally had a plan in set, they were both going to tell Emma about Dani’s family.  After that, Kevin was going to take Emma upstairs and keep her occupied while Dani told her family about Emma.

“So, Emma we have some people coming over in about 20 minutes,” Dani said as Emma looked up at Dani and said, “people over here.”

“Yes, people are coming, they are your Grandparents, Aunts, and Uncles,” Dani said to Emma.

“Are they going to yell at me,” Emma said as she played with the hem of her pink dress.

“No, they are nice people they aren’t going to yell at you, okay,” Dani said to Emma.

“Now do you have any more questions?” Dani asked her after she had asked her about ten questions from are, they nice to do they like the color pink.

Emma nodded and then said, “What do I call them?”

“Well,” Dani said as she looked at the time and noticed that they were going to be here any minute, it had taken a little bit longer to explain everything to Emma, especially with all of her little questions.  “Daddy will explain that to you upstairs okay Emma,” Dani said as she shooed both her husband and daughter upstairs.

The doorbell rang as soon as Kevin had closed the door.  “Hi guys come on in,” Dani said as she answered the door.

          “Where’s Kevin?” Angela asked.

“He’s upstairs,” was all Dani said.  She didn’t want to give too much away yet.

“Sit down in the living room, I have to talk to you guys about something,” Dani told her family before following them all into the living room.

Dani thought that it would be the best to start at the beginning of the story and just blurt it out rather than make “small talk” before she said her news.  “On Friday night, Kevin went downstairs to get me something, and he found a little girl in our basement,” Dani said bracing for everyone’s reaction.

“A little girl,” Angela screeched.  “Like an actual human being.”

“Yes,” Dani said.  “Her name is Emma, and she is four years old,” Dani said, and then quietly muttered, “She is upstairs.”

Bucky who had been quiet throughout this whole thing, finally said, “Well are we going to meet her?”

Dani looked up at her father, “you want to meet her,” Dani said as her dad nodded his head.

“Okay, let me go get her and Kevin,” Dani said as she stood up and went upstairs leaving her family downstairs.

“Wow,” Katie said.  “That was a shocker.”  Everyone muttered a response to her.

When Dani got upstairs, Kevin and Emma were sitting on the bed talking, Emma was cuddled into Kevin.  “Hey guys,” Dani said when she came in the bedroom door.

“Mommy,” Emma yelled.  She was so excited to see her.

“Emma Bug, we have people that want to meet you,” Dani said as she picked Emma up.

“Mommy are the people’s going to be means like Sir was to me,” Emma said.  Dani looked at Kevin who said, “she has been worried about that all morning, haven’t you Emma?”  Emma just nodded her head and stuck her thumb in her mouth.

“Emma,” Dani said as she sat down with her on the bed, “these people are nice, they aren’t mean like Sir is, okay?”  Emma just nodded her head.  “Are you ready to go downstairs and meet them?” Dani said as Emma nodded her head.

“Come on let’s go downstairs and meet everyone then,” Emma said as they went downstairs and into the living room where Dani’s family was.  “Guys this is Emma,” Dani said as she held the little girl.

“Hi Emma, I am your Nonna,” Angela said as Emma buried her face into Dani’s shirt and started crying.

“Oh Emma,” Dani said as she rubbed her back to get her calmed down, “it’s okay.”

After a couple of minutes Emma stopped crying.  Next was Bucky, “Hi Emma I am your Poppy,” he said, he got a giggle out of Emma.  She thought that it was funny that he was called Poppy.

“Hi Emma, I am your Ziti Dina,” Dina said as she came up to her.  Emma laughed and said Ziti in her tiny voice.

“Hi Emma, I am your cool uncle, Uncle B,” Brian said next.

“Hi Emma, I am your Zio,” Mikey said as he came up to her.  She giggled when she heard Zio.

“Hi Emma, I am your Zia Katie,” Katie said as she came up to her and said hi.  Emma, who was still a little shy, hid her head in her Mom’s shoulder.

“Come on let’s eat lunch,” Angela said as they all sat down at the table in the kitchen.  Emma wouldn’t leave Dani’s lap no matter how hard they had tried to get her to sit in her own chair, she refused.

Lunch went smoothly, until Emma started getting grumpy, and threw a noodle that she didn’t want across the table.  “Emma do you need some corner time?” Kevin asked her, she shook her head but then threw another noodle across the table.

Kevin stood up, picked her up out of Dani’s lap and put her in one of the living room corners.  They decided last night that this would be her corner for corner time.  “You need to stay there for four minutes, Emma,” Kevin said as Emma looked up at him with tears dripping down her cheeks already.

Kevin left her sit there and went back to eating her lunch.  “You did a good job with her Kevin,” Angela said when he sat down.

“Thanks, when Frankie was that age my parents did that same thing with him,” Kevin said.

“Do your parents know about her yet?” Bucky asked as he took a bite of his pasta.

“No, I am going to call them tonight and see if they can all come out sometime this week to meet her.  I don’t really want to tell them over the phone if possible,” Kevin said.

“If you will excuse me, I have to go get my daughter out of the corner now,” Kevin said as Katie started laughing.

“Why are you laughing, Katie,” Kevin said as he turned around and saw her laughing.

“Because it sounded like you put her in the corner,” Katie said.

“Well, I did,” Kevin said as he turned and left the room to go get Emma.   When he got in the living room, he saw Emma hiding under the table in the corner while Riley and Maci barked at her.

“Emma, what are you doing under there?” Kevin said as he came over and tried to coax Emma out of under the table.  It was when Kevin got down on his hands and knees to get her out of under the table that he saw that she was crying.  “Emma, what’s wrong?” Kevin said as he picked up Riley and Maci and moved them over so he could see what was wrong with Emma.

“Daddy,” Emma said as she came hurdling out into his arms, she was crying.  She eventually stuck her thumb in her mouth and calmed down.

“Emma, you can’t throw noodles across the table, okay,” Kevin said as he sat down on the couch with her in his lap.  Emma just nodded, “okay Daddy, I am sorry.”

“It’s okay, now let’s go back and finish lunch,” Kevin said as he stood up and walked back into the kitchen with her in her arms.  “Daddy, I sit by self,” Emma said as Kevin sat down with her on his lap.

“Okay Emma,” Kevin said as he sat her on the chair between him and Dani, and then slid her plate over to be more in front of her.

Once they were done with lunch, Angela brought out dessert, Ice Cream Bars, she had gotten plenty for the whole family and extras, and there was enough for Emma to have one too.  “Here Emma,” Angela said as she gave her an ice cream bar.  Emma looked at it for the longest time before taking a bite of it, when she did no one expected her face though.  Tears started dripping down her face and she started crying.

“Daddy,” Emma cried out.  She didn’t like her ice cream one bit; it was too sweet and really cold.

“Shhh,” Kevin said as he grabbed her and placed her on his lap.  She cuddled into him and started sucking her thumb, it was too cold.  “I don’t like it,” Emma said when Katie tried to give it to her again.

“Oh Emma,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back, “shhh,” he said as Emma closed her eyes and fell into a deep sleep.  Kevin stood up with her in his arms, “I am going to go put her upstairs,” Kevin said.  It was apparent that the four-year-old still needed daily naps.

“Here Kevin, we’ll take her,” Katie said as Dina stood up and reached out for her.  Kevin gave her to Dina, “which one is her bedroom,” Dina asked.  She figured that she had her own bedroom.

“She has been sharing a room with us these past couple of days, so you can put her in our room.  We are going to get her room set up in the next couple of weeks and she will for sure have a new room once we move to the new house,” Kevin said.

“Okay, thanks, we will be right back down,” Katie said as she followed Dina and Emma upstairs.  They put her down for her nap and then went back downstairs.

Finding Hope – Chapter 5

It was two days later when Kevin found himself in the kitchen with his family.  He was about to tell them the news that he had a daughter.

“So, the reason I wanted you all to come here was because,” Kevin started saying as he got interrupted.

“Daddy,” Emma said as she came into the kitchen area sucking her thumb while clutching her teddy bear in her arm.  “I heard a ding and Mommy was sleeping and she didn’t want to wake up.”

“That was the doorbell honey,” Kevin said.

“I sleepy Daddy,” Emma said as she climbed up on his lap and closed her eyes, not realizing that people were there.

“Kevin, what is that little girl doing calling you Daddy,” Denise whispered yelled.

“This is why I called you all here, let me put her upstairs and then I will come and tell you,” Kevin said as he went upstairs and laid a sleeping Emma down by a sleeping Dani.  He then gave both of his girls kisses on the head took a deep breath and headed downstairs.

“As you can probably all tell, that was my daughter,” Kevin said as his family started firing questions at him.

“Let me explain and see if that answers all of your questions,” Kevin calmly said.  He knew that if he stayed calm his family might stay calmer.

“Anyways, last Friday night Dani had me go downstairs to get something for her and as I was walking to get it, I saw this little girl in the corner of our basement.  She was soaking wet from the rain and shivering.  Her name is Emma, and she is four years old.  I took her upstairs with me; I wasn’t going to just push her back onto the streets.  She was really shy that first night.  We fed her dinner and she hardly ate anything.  When Dani took her to the bathroom, that night she saw bruises on her tiny body, she said she was beaten by a man called Sir.  She has had nightmares every night since she got here.   Anyways, we called the police on Friday night and, they let us keep her for the weekend, and yesterday Dani and I both officially adopted her,” Kevin finished as he held his breath, waiting for his parents to not approve of his decision, but all he was met with was tears and hugs from both of his parents.

“Hi guys,” Dani said as she came downstairs a while later, she had just woken up from her nap.  After she said hello to everyone, she sat down between Kevin and Frankie.

“Where is my granddaughter,” Paul asked.  They had seen her briefly when she came out because she heard the doorbell and didn’t know what it was.

“She is still sleeping,” Dani said as she heard little footsteps behind them.  “Mommy, you gone when I woke ups,” Emma said as she climbed onto her mom’s lap.

“I know I was saying hello to your grandparents and uncles,” Dani said as she gave her a soft kiss on the head.

“More Zio’s and Uncle B’s,” Emma exclaimed.  She was overwhelmed with all of these people that she was meeting.

          “Well yes,” Dani said.

“Hi Emma, I am your Grandpapa,” Paul said as he came over to where Dani was holding Emma and introduced himself.

“I am your Glammy,” Denise said as she also came over and introduced herself.

“I am your cool uncle, I am Uncle Joe,” Joe said as he came over and tickled her a little.  Emma giggled a little when he tickled her.

“I am Uncle Nick,” Nick said as he got up and came over.  “Kevin do you have any juice?” Nick asked.

“Yea it should be on the door,” Kevin said as he watched his younger brother very closely.  He always kept the fridge stocked with juice for this very reason.

“Daddy, I want juice too,” Emma said as she reached out for him.

“Just a minute Emma,” Kevin said as he gave her a kiss on the head.  “Let’s let Uncle Nick get his juice first, plus you still have to meet your Uncle Frankie.”

“Hi Emma, I am your coolest Uncle Frankie, if you ever need something that your Daddy won’t let you have come to me and I will get it for you,” Frankie said as Emma giggled.

“Oh great,” Kevin said, “you better not be getting her into illegal stuff.”

“Uncle Frankie, can I have juice?” Emma asked.

“Wow you are already playing the cool uncle card,” Frankie laughed.  “You know how this works already,” he said as he got up and went to the fridge, “Emma do you want apple or orange.”

“I don’t know,” Emma said as she looked confused.

“Here why don’t you try this one,” Frankie said as he grabbed an apple juice off of the door and poked the little straw attached the box in it as he brought it over to her.

Emma took one sip and then started crying, “Daddy, I don’t like it,” she said as she pushed it away from her.

“Yea I had a feeling you wouldn’t like it Em,” Kevin laughed.  The ice cream on Sunday had given them a hint that she didn’t like sweet things.  Then yesterday when she and Kevin went to the grocery store, Kevin got a doughnut for them to split and she didn’t like that, it was too sweet.

“I don’t like it Daddy,” Emma said again as she turned around and sobbed into him.

“Shhh, it’s okay, you don’t have to have it,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back, “Emma Bear do you want some milk,” Kevin said as Emma stuck her thumb in her mouth and nodded her head with tears dripping down her face.

“Frank, can you get her some white milk, it’s on the door, the 2 percent,” Kevin asked his little brother as Frankie went and got a glass of milk for Emma.

“Here you are Emma,” Frankie said as he sat it down in front of her.  She took the big glass in her small hands, with the help of Kevin, and took a big drink of it.

“Is that better?” Kevin whispered into her hair and gave her a kiss on the head.  “What do you say to Uncle Frankie?”

“Thank you, Uncle Frankie,” Emma said as she snuggled into her Dad and stuck her thumb back in her mouth.

The rest of the night went smoothly, Emma was the perfect granddaughter and niece that anyone could ask for.  “Emma it’s time for your bath, then its book time and bedtime,” Dani said.  Since Sunday night, she and Kevin had been reading Emma books before bed and they had started calling it book time.  She loved reading books, and drawing, but her absolute favorite activity was cuddling with her parents.

“Okay Mommy,” Emma said as she reached up, indicating that she wanted to be carried.  Dani picked her up and carried her upstairs to their bedroom where Emma was staying for now.  Even though they had more rooms than she could ever imagine, both Kevin and Dani talked about it with Emma and she felt safer in bed with them.

“Emma do you have to go potty before your bath,” Dani asked the little girl who nodded her head.  Dani sat her on the potty chair and then started the water.

“Emma, are you done?” Dani asked once the tub was filled with warm water.  Emma just nodded and then took off her shirt that she was wearing.  After she had her bath, Dani let her go downstairs and say good night to her uncles, grandparents, and dad.

“Daddy book,” Emma asked her that night after her and Dani went downstairs.

“If you bring me the book you want to read, we can read it down here with Glammy and Grandpapa, but then its right to bed.

“Princess Baby?” Emma asked, Princess Baby was one of her favorite books.

“Okay, go get it and then we will read it,” Kevin said as he gave her a kiss on the head.  Emma hopped off of his lap and went upstairs to get the book.

“She is adorable, Kevin,” Denise said.

“She is really good, we have had a couple of times that she has needed corner time but other than that she is really sweet,” Kevin said.

“Daddy I can’t find it,” Emma yelled.  It was then that Kevin remembered that he hid it from her this morning, when he was on the phone asking him to read it with her.

“Emma, Daddy’s coming,” Kevin said as he got upstairs and went into their room and grabbed the book from the shelf that he put it on.

“Can we read it here with Glammy and Grandpapa,” Emma asked her dad.

“Let’s go downstairs and read it with them, I know that isn’t your routine but it’s just for tonight and then we will go back to reading books in here,” Kevin said.

“Okay, up,” Emma said and reached her arms up for Kevin to pick her up.  He picked her up, “hold onto the book for Daddy,” he said as he handed her the book.  She admired the cover until they were downstairs.

“I like cuddles with Mommy and Daddy,” Emma said when they were downstairs and sitting on the couch next to Kevin’s parents.  “Daddy I snuggle with you,” Emma said as she snuggled in with him and stuck her thumb in her mouth and rubbed her eyes with the other hand.  “Teddy, we forget Teddy,” Emma said as she jumped off her dad’s lap and ran upstairs and got him and came back down with her brown Teddy Bear.

“Now I’m ready for book time,” Emma said as she rubbed her tired eyes again, “I sleepy Daddy,” Emma said as she snuggled into him some more and closed her eyes while Kevin started the book.

About halfway through the book, Kevin looked down to find a sound asleep Emma snuggled into him.  He closed the book and carried a sound asleep Emma upstairs and laid her in their bed.  Then he came downstairs to find his family all sitting together in the living room.  Both Joe and Nick had a beer bottle in their hands.  Nick was close enough to twenty-one, it only being a little less than a month and he wasn’t driving anywhere tonight so it was okay.

“Kevin do you want one, I ran out and got some, you didn’t have any in your fridge,” Joe said.

“No, I gave up,” Kevin said but didn’t elaborate until both of his brothers said in unison, “you gave up beer,” they said as Kevin nodded.

“Wait, what, when?  When you were on tour you had a beer every night, when did this happen, start talking mister,” Nick said.

“Emma is afraid of me when I drink beer,” Kevin said, as she sat down next to Nick, and then went on to tell the story.

Last night after dinner, Kevin sat down on the couch with the last bottle of beer in his hand.  He made a mental note to buy some more tomorrow at the store before his brothers came.  Emma came running in the room to show him something, probably another drawing that she had made, when she backed up out of the room and started crying.

“Emma,” Kevin said as he sat his beer bottle down and went up to find her.  He was confused to why she would start crying.  ‘Was she hurt?  Did he do something?  What was going on?’ those were just some of the thoughts that were going through his head at the time.

“Emma what’s wrong?” Kevin said when he found Emma just around the corner crying, he could hear little sobs coming from her.  Emma just tried to get away from him.

“Daddy scary,” Emma said as she kept as close to the corner as possible.  She was afraid that he was going to hurt her.

“Emma, what do you mean?” Kevin asked as he got down at her level.

“Sir used to invite his friends over to drink bottles and they would always yell at me, throw them at me, and hit me.  I don’t want that to happen again,” Emma said quietly as she looked up at him.

“Em, Daddy will never be mean to you,” Kevin said as he tried to give her a hug.  As soon as Kevin opened his arms to give her a hug, Emma came hurdling into him sobbing.

“Daddy,” Kevin heard behind him, she then ran to him, jumped in his lap, and buried her face in his chest.

“Emma Bear, what’s wrong?” Kevin said as he rubbed her back to get her calmed down.

“Scary dream,” Emma said as she snuggled into him more and stuck her thumb in her mouth, a telltale sign that she was still scared.  She only stuck her thumb in her mouth when she was scared, upset, or tired.

“Oh honey,” Kevin said as he tried to get her to calm down.  “You want to talk about its Emma Bear?” Kevin asked her as he looked down at Emma to find her eyes closed again.  Kevin leaned down and gave her a gentle kiss on her head.  Once she was sleeping, he carried her upstairs and laid her in bed.

Finding Hope – Chapter 6

It had been a couple days since Emma had met both families.  Kevin and Dani found out that Emma did not like eggs and wasn’t really a big fan of ham.  Besides not liking anything sweet, she now did not like eggs or ham.  She loved pizza and fruit.  Apples were her big thing right now.  She always wanted apples.

“Daddy, can I have apple?” Emma asked that afternoon before the live chat announcing the sex of the baby.

“What do you say?” Kevin said, they had been trying to get her to use her manners more and more every day.  She liked to demand things.

“Please Daddy,” Emma said with a smile.

“Yea, but then you have to go color with Riley and Maci, like we talked about last night, until we call you okay?”

“Yes Daddy,” Emma said as Kevin gave her a bowl filled with an apple that he just sliced up for her to eat.

Emma, can Mommy and Daddy talk to you?” Dani said the night before the live chat.  Once Emma was in her favorite spot, squished in between both of her parents, Kevin started talking.

“Emma, Daddy is famous,” Kevin started out saying.  Emma just looked completely confused.

“What that mean?” Emma said as she looked up at her dad.  Kevin looked at Dani, this was turning out to be a lot harder than they thought it was going to be.

“It means that I have fans all over the world who know who I am,” Kevin said as she still looked utterly confused.

“So that knows who you are,” Emma asked as she pointed at the ceiling fan in the living room.

“No Emma,” Kevin laughed at his four-year-old daughter, “I have people all around the world that know who I am, that is what fans are,” Kevin said as Emma still looked a little confused.
“I know who you are Daddy,” Emma said.

“Do people know who Mommy is too,” Emma asked looking at Dani.

“Yes, many people know who I am,” Dani said as she looked down at the little girl squished in between them.  “I think what Daddy is trying to tell you is that we are going to have a live chat tomorrow night to tell them about you and your baby sister,” Dani said.

Emma was coloring with Riley and Maci while Kevin and Dani started the chat out.  “Hi everyone, how are you tonight?  So, before we announce what the sex of the baby is, we have something to tell you,” Kevin said.

“A couple of weeks ago, we found a little girl in our basement,” Dani said as she looked over at Kevin to finish, she didn’t really know what else to say.

“As Dani was saying, we found a little girl in our basement a couple of weeks ago.  She was underweighting and had been abused when we found her, so we decided to adopt her into our family, her name is Emma,” Kevin said as he called for his daughter.

“Hi Daddy, I drew a picture,” Emma said as she climbed on her father’s lap along with her light brown bear.

“Do you want to show everyone your pretty picture?” Kevin asked her.

“Yea, it’s a picture of Mommy, Daddy, me, Riley and Maci,” Emma said as she showed everyone.

“Emma why is everyone else purple, but Mommy is orange,” Dani asked her daughter.

“Riley ate my purple crayon, because Teddy fell over, so I had to help him sit up again, so I put down my purple crayon and then Riley came over and ate it.”

“Oh,” was all that Dani said.  They would have a talk later with Emma about leaving her crayons out, especially if Riley did eat a crayon.  They would have to look up what to do or they would probably just call the vet.

“Daddy, can we tell them that I am going to be a big sister yet,” Emma wined as she snuggled into him.

“Let’s ask if they have any questions for you first though,” Kevin said as Emma nodded.

“Emma, they want to know what your favorite color is?” that was the only one that Kevin found to be easy enough/appropriate to ask his daughter.  Most of them were just wanting to know what the baby was.

“My favorite color is purple, like my purple dress,” Emma said as she got so excited.

“Daddy, I am hungry,” Emma said as she squiggled on his lap.

“I know you are baby; we will get dinner after we are done talking with the fans,” Kevin whispered into her hair so only she heard it.

“Emma what do you say we tell them about you being a big sister,” Kevin asked her.  He could tell that she was going to get cranky soon.

“Yea,” Emma said as both Kevin and Dani opened the box of balloons that were sitting behind them.  When the balloons came out of the box Emma jumped in her father’s lap.

“We are having a girl,” Kevin and Dani said in unison when the pink balloons came out of the box.  A couple minutes later they said their good-byes and signed off.  They put up the ultrasound picture for the fans to see that they were having a girl.

“Daddy, I am hungry,” Emma wined.

“Emma before we eat, Mommy and Daddy want to talk to you okay,” Dani said as Emma looked at her parents.

“Emma, why didn’t you come tell me or Daddy that Riley ate the purple crayon?” Dani asked her.

“Because Daddy said that I couldn’t make any noise until he called me, and I didn’t want to get in trouble,” Emma said.

“Emma that is true, but if something like that ever happens again you have to come get Mommy or Daddy right away,” Kevin said.

          “Okay,” Emma said.

“Now where were you coloring when Riley came and ate your crayon?” Dani said as Emma hopped off of Kevin’s lap and ran over to where she was coloring in the living room.

When they got in the living room, they found no crayons in Emma’s crayon bin and the crayon wrappers all over the living room but no actual crayons anywhere.  “See Daddy, Riley ate all of my crayons,” Emma said as both Riley and Maci came in licking their lips and looking for more to eat.

“I think it was a little more than just Riley who ate them, I think Maci helped her too,” Dani said as she went over to Riley and Maci.  “Kevin calls the emergency vet and tell them that we are bringing over both Riley and Maci.  Tell them that they ate crayons, I am going to go get them and Emma loaded up in the car,” Dani said as she went to turn on the car and get Riley, Maci and Emma in the car.

“Mommy where are we going?” Emma asked as Dani opened the car door and she climbed into the car and into her car seat.  She didn’t quite get how to do her seat belt yet, so Dani had to help her.

“We are going to the doggie doctor,” Dani said, “we need to make sure that Riley and Maci are okay after eating all of those crayons of yours.”

“Oh, I hope they are okay,” Emma said, but then added, “what is a doctor?”  She knew what a doggie was, but she had no clue what a doctor was.

It then dawned on Dani that they had been so busy with everything going on these past couple of weeks that they hadn’t taken Emma to the doctor to get all checked out and to make sure she was fine.  “A doctor helps someone feel better,” Dani said as Kevin came out.

“The emergency vet said that we should bring them over if we think they ate that many crayons,” Kevin said as he got in the car and backed out of the garage.

They were at the animal hospital soon.  By the time they got to the animal hospital Riley and Maci weren’t their energetic self.  Both girls were very sleepy and tired.

“Come on Emma,” Kevin said as he opened the door and got her unbuckled while Dani went inside with the two dogs.

She didn’t want to walk she wanted to be picked up.  “DADDY PICK ME UP,” Emma yelled.  “NO, DADDY PICK ME UP,” Emma continued to yell from her place on the ground.

“Emma, do you need corner time,” Kevin asked her.

“NOOOOOO Daddy pick me up,” Emma screamed as Kevin came over, and tried to pick her up.  She was screaming way too much to be in the animal hospital right now.  “NOOOOOO Daddy, let me go, I don’t want corner time,” Emma screamed when Kevin was trying to get her in the car.  She was now having a full-on temper tantrum, she was yelling and kicking and screaming making it impossible for Kevin to pick her up and put her in the car.

Kevin finally got Emma in the car, and got the door closed.  He then got in the car, with her.  He didn’t want to leave her in there alone.  He texted Dani telling her where they were and what was going on.

After five minutes of non-stop screaming, Emma calmed down.  Kevin looked back at Emma who still had tears running down her face, but she was quiet for now.

“Emma, why did you scream and yell like that?  You know better than that, I didn’t even know you wanted to be picked up, if you would have asked, I would have picked you up,” Kevin said as he turned around in the front seat to look at his daughter who still had tears running down her cheeks.  All she did was shrug her shoulders and look up at him.

          “Sorry Daddy,” Emma said quietly.

“It is okay honey, should we go find Mommy?” Kevin asked as he got out of the car and opened the car door.  He quickly picked Emma up out of her car seat and carried her inside where they found Dani right away in the waiting room.

“Hi guys, I was just getting ready to text you with an update,” Dani said as she looked up at Kevin and Emma who was laying her head on Kevin’s shoulder and had her thumb in her mouth.  A sign that she was still upset.

“Why was she so upset?” Dani asked.  They had never seen Emma throw a fit or get mad and scream in the three weeks they had her.

“She wanted to be picked up, but she didn’t ask,” Kevin said as he looked at his daughter.

“Mommy,” Emma said as she reached out for Dani.  Dani stood up and took her on her lap.  “Are the doggies going to be okay?” Emma asked as she laid her head on Dani’s chest.

“I think the doggies will be okay,” Dani said as she laid a hand on Emma’s forehead.  She was acting very clingy right now, clingier than her usual self.  “Emma are you feeling okay?” Dani asked her as Emma just laid her head back on her chest.  She didn’t feel warm or anything.

“So, what is going on?  What did they say?” Kevin asked as he sat down by Dani and Emma.

“They did an X-Ray on both of them and they both had a large substance in their stomachs, probably the crayon wax that they ate.  So, they are inducing vomiting on them right now,” Dani said.  “I think we now need to make some rules for when she is coloring to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Dani was just finishing saying as they got called into an examination room to discuss what happened.

“Emma do you want to walk or have Daddy carry you?” Dani asked Emma.

“Daddy,” Emma said quietly as Kevin came and picked her up.  Emma snuggled into Kevin’s chest very quickly.

“This is my husband Kevin, and my daughter Emma,” Dani said when she saw the vet tech that she recognized.

“Hi, I am Megan,” she said as she shook Kevin’s hand.

“Your dogs are fine, we had to induce vomiting on them as I was telling your wife earlier,” Megan said looking at Kevin and now a sleeping Emma.  She was very tired and hungry.  “So, because of this, your dogs need to be on a canned food diet for a couple of days to settle their stomachs and get them back to normal.”

“What does that mean?” Dani asked.

“That means that they won’t be able to have treats or regular dog food.  It is actually a prescription dog food that I will be giving you, it has extra nutrients and vitamins in it to keep them healthy for these next couple of days,” Megan said.

“How long do they have to be on this diet,” Kevin asked.

“Nothing to eat or drink tonight, and then two to three days on this diet.  We typically have you feed them three times a day, for the first day and then reduce it to two times after that,” Megan said.  “You will get the exact feeding instructions and the food upfront though.  Do you have any other questions for me?”

“No, I think that is it,” Dani said.

“Okay, let me go get your dogs for you,” Megan said as she left the room and came back with the two dogs who both looked exhausted from the whole experience.

Kevin took Emma and the dogs to the car while Dani paid the vet bill.  “Daddy, are we going to eat soon?” Emma asked as Kevin was strapping her in.  He got both dogs and Emma in the car before Dani came out with the dog food.

“Yea we are going to go eat right now,” Kevin said as Emma nodded her head and closed her eyes.

The next afternoon, Dani was running errands, while Kevin and Emma were at home cuddling on the couch, when the doorbell rang.  Emma jumped; she was not like most kids.  She was scared to death of the doorbell.  Kevin picked her up wondering who could be at the door, Dani’s family would just come in through the garage and they weren’t expecting anyone, or he didn’t think so anyways.

When Kevin answered the door, he saw a big mean-looking scruffy man on the other side.  “Uh hi, what do you need?” Kevin asked the man.

“Hi Emma,” the man creepily said.  This made Emma scream and hold her father around the neck very tightly.

“Daddy, Daddy, Daddy,” Emma kept on repeating through silent tears.  She was scared to death of that man, who happened to be known to her as Sir.  She was scared that he was going to come take her away from them.

“Shhh,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back while still looking at the man, who he assumed was Sir.  He was also trying to figure out a way that he could call the police while holding onto Emma and keeping an eye on him.

“Give me the girl,” the man said.

“No,” Kevin said as the man came and tried to grab Emma’s left leg, which only made Emma grab onto Kevin tighter.  She was so scared that Sir was going to take her away.

“Daddy, Daddy, Daddy,” Emma kept on repeating.  She was so scared.

“Please leave you are scaring my daughter,” Kevin said firmly as he started at the man.

“Oh, who says she is your daughter, she is actually mine, aren’t you little brat,” the man said.

“Daddy no don’t let him take me,” Emma cried as she grabbed onto Kevin’s neck even tighter than she had previously been.

“Shhh, I won’t let him take you, Emma,” Kevin whispered again into her hair.  He had to think quickly and get her out of here, preferably both of them, but definitely her.

“Well, you are obviously scaring my daughter, so you need to leave now please,” Kevin said sternly.  When that didn’t work, Kevin had to come up with another idea and quickly.  However, it didn’t take long for the man to leave the house and get in the truck.

The man got in his car and left the house a couple minutes later, but not before saying, “I will be back for you brat,” to Emma who visibly flinched in Kevin’s arms.

Kevin took out his phone and called the police and told them the license plate, the way he was heading and the model of the truck he was driving.  They told them that they would keep him updated.

“Daddy, I pee-pee,” Emma said as she started wiggling in his arms.  “Real’s bad,” Emma said as Kevin set her on the floor as she ran to the bathroom.  There he helped her pull down her pants.  He then lifted her on the toilet and held onto her.  She peed almost immediately.

“Emma Bear, do you have to go poops,” Kevin asked his daughter.  They had been trying to get her to go ever since Saturday.  She typically went once if not twice a day.  She hadn’t gone since Saturday and they were worried that she was constipated.

“No Daddy,” Emma shook her head as Kevin helped stand her up and wipe her with toilet paper.

“Emma, you know you are eventually going to have to poops,” Kevin said as Emma just looked at him.

“I don’t have to poops though,” Emma said as she stuck her thumb in her mouth again and indicated she wanted to be picked up.  Emma was still shaken up from it, she still had tears coming down her face.

“Come on Emma, let’s go take a nap,” Kevin said as he picked her up again.  She snuggled into him and stuck her thumb in her mouth as Kevin took her up to his and Dani’s bedroom.  He laid her on the bed and then covered her up with a blanket.  She was out in no time.

Kevin took this time to text Dani and tell her that she needed to come home as soon as she was able too.  She said that she would be home in a half an hour.  Kevin stayed in the room with her until his phone started blasting its ringtone.  He then quietly took it right outside of the bedroom door before answering it.

“Hello, is this Kevin Jonas?  This is Gary from the Denville Police Station,” the person on the other line said.

“Yes, this is he,” Kevin said as he looked down at his feet, it was a habit he had when he was on the phone.  The fans went nuts for it, but he didn’t really care.

“I just wanted to let you know that we have Trevor Grande in custody now, and he is no longer a threat to you or your daughter, he is going to be going to jail,” Gary said.

“Thank you so much,” Kevin said as they both said their goodbyes and hung up.  Kevin checked on Emma who was sound asleep sucking her thumb and hugging her Teddy Bear.  He then headed downstairs to watch some TV until Dani came home.

“Hi Dani,” Kevin said when she came home a while later with her hands full of food.

“Where is Emma?” Dani asked, thinking she was going to see the little girl run into her legs any second now.

“She is sleeping upstairs, Sir came to the door,” Kevin said as he helped Dani unload the groceries.

“What,” Dani said as she looked at Kevin in shock.  “Why didn’t you call me to come home, where is he now.”

“He was arrested, he is in jail,” Kevin said.

“Wait, how,” Dani said.

“He came to the house and scared Emma, and I somehow got him to leave.  When he left, I called 911 and they called about a half an hour later saying they found him and he is in custody,” Kevin said.

“Custody,” Dani shrieked, as she looked at him.  “What if they let him go,” Dani said.

“He is going to jail, he apparently cooperated with the police and told them everything,” Kevin said as he helped Dani unload the last bag of groceries.

Finding Hope – Chapter 7

It had been almost a week since Sir came to the door.  Today, Emma had her first doctor’s appointment.  They were actually heading to the doctor’s office right now.  “Daddy, why are we here?” Emma asked when they pulled into the parking lot.

“We are here because you have your first doctor’s appointment today,” Kevin said as he pulled into a parking spot.

“What is the doctor?” Emma asked, “Is it like the doggie doctor?”

“Yea, it’s like the doggie doctor,” Kevin said.  That is what they had called the vet when they had to take Riley and Maci to the emergency vet last week.  Emma reached out for her Dad who picked her up.  Once they got upstairs and were in the waiting room, Kevin put Emma down.  She looked around at all of the toys and then ran back to Dani who was now sitting on one of the chairs reading a magazine waiting to be called.

“Mommy,” Emma called as she ran towards her and jumped on her lap, she stuck her thumb in her mouth and cuddled into Dani.

“Hi Emma,” Dani said as she put down her magazine and looked down at Emma who had stuck her thumb in her mouth.  They called them back a couple minutes later.

“Okay Emma, I need you to stand on here for me,” the nurse said as Emma stood on the scale and waited for the nurse to be done weighing her.  “Okay, it looks like we have 19 pounds,” the nurse said as she wrote it down on her chart.  “Now I need you to stand really tall for me,” she said as Emma stood really tall for her by the wall, which had a tape measure on it.  “We have 32 and 1/8 inch,” she said as Emma ran to her Dad.

“Daddy,” Emma said as she ran towards him.  Kevin picked her up and they followed the nurse to the examination room.

“Okay, so why are we here today,” the nurse asked as soon as the door was shut.

“We found little Emma in our basement about two weeks ago, she had been abused.  We decided to adopt her and give her a much better home,” Dani said as she looked over at Kevin and Emma.

“So, it is for a first visit,” the nurse said, “at least that is what it says in the file.”

“Yes, that is what it is for,” Dani said as the nurse put a blood pressure cuff around Emma’s arm.  She pressed a button and it started squeezing her arm.  While that was happening, she took out a thermometer and put it in her mouth.

“Her temperature is 98.4 and her blood pressure is 105/88,” the nurse said as she typed her information into the computer, logged off, put away the blood pressure cuff and thermometer, “the doctor will be right in,” she said as she left the room.

“What was her temp again?” Dani asked.  She had gotten everything else written down, except for her temperature.

          “98.4, I think,” Kevin said.

“Hi, I am Dr. Hyman,” she said as she came into the room.  “Emma, can we get you to sit up here on the table for me, I have to listen to your heart,” the doctor said, she tried to make it sound fun.  Emma however buried her face in her father’s chest.

“Emma, the doctor needs you up on the table,” Kevin whispered in her hair as he stood up and set her on the table.  Once the doctor tapped her knees and listened to her heart and lungs, she sat down with Kevin and Dani.

“So, as I realized in her chart, Emma is underweighting and is short for her age, she weighs in at 19 pounds which is really underweight for a four-year-old, and she is a little over 32 inches, which is also really short for her age.  I am not as worried about her being short, but her being underweight I am concerned about, and she is way underweight for her height.  All kids grow in different ways, some are shorter; some are taller.  There is no really typical height for a kid.  So, I wouldn’t worry about her being taller, but I would worry about her weight,” the doctor said.

“She hardly eats anything and when she does eat, she eats fruit, mainly apples,” Kevin said.

“Well apples have a lot of good fiber, but they are low in calories, does she drink milk?” the doctor asked.

“Yea she loves milk,” Dani said.

“What percent of milk does she drink?” the doctor asked.

“She drinks 2 percent milk,” Dani said as Emma snuggled into her some more.

“There isn’t that much difference in calories between whole and 2 percent milk, the only difference in whole milk is the fat content, I typically wouldn’t recommend this for her age, but I think it will be a good start, I would give her whole milk for a while.  I want to see you back in six weeks again to do another weight and height check on her,” the doctor said as she left the room after shaking Kevin and Dani’s hands.

The next day was the day that Kevin, Dani, and Emma were filming for Rachel Ray Show.  As soon as Rachel had found out that Dani was pregnant, she had been asking them to be on the show.

They were making the two-hour trip to the city today to be on the show.  “Emma are you ready to be on TV?” Kevin asked when they were pulling into the back-parking lot of the Rachel Ray Show.  Emma didn’t say anything.  She had been quieter than her normal perky self that day.

They were doing a segment with Riley and Maci too, and how-to best train and prepare their dogs for when the baby was born.  They even had Rachel’s dog trainer, Justin, there to help them out.

Kevin grabbed the dog’s leashes and hooked them to their collars before picking Emma up out of her car seat.  “Come on Emma,” Kevin said as he picked her up out of her car seat.  Emma just rested her head on Kevin’s shoulder.  They had tried to get her to sleep on the way to New York, but she didn’t want too so she was a little on the tired side.

Once they were inside the studio, it was a whirlwind of busyness.  There were people going in every which way helping both Kevin and Dani to makeup and dressed.  Kevin and Dani had been through this before, but little Emma had never been through this before.

“Emma, Mommy and Daddy have to go be on the show, okay,” Dani said as she came over and gave her a quick hug and kiss.  Later on, in the show, Emma was going to be joining them and Rachel to be introduced to the world.  As soon as Rachel had found out about Emma, she wanted to hear the whole story, so Kevin and Dani had agreed to have Emma on the show along with the dogs.

“Mommy,” Emma cried as soon as Dani left the room.  She didn’t know what was going on, she just wanted her Mom.

“Come on Emma, let’s watch them on the big TV,” Justin, Rachel’s dog trainer said as he turned on the big TV to have Dani’s face pop up on the screen.  He had agreed to watch her while Kevin and Dani were on the talk show.

Emma would get upset every time the camera wasn’t on Dani.  “Mommy,” Emma would cry, she had snot dripping down her face.  Justin had tried to wipe her nose for her, but she wasn’t having it.

“Mommy,” Emma screamed when they went into the first commercial break.  During this short commercial break, Kevin and Dani stayed out and talked quietly with Rachel.  It was the next commercial break that they were going to bring out Emma and the dogs.

“Emma, come on let’s play with Riley and Maci,” Justin said.  He was trying to keep her occupied while Kevin and Dani were out of the room.  Emma didn’t move, she just stood there and cried until Kevin and Dani came into the room.

“Mommy,” Emma cried as she ran into her legs sobbing as soon as Kevin and Dani came into the room.

“Oh Emma, what’s wrong?” Dani said as she picked up the four-year-old.  Emma laid her head on her shoulder and calmed down right away.

“She has been crying out for you from the second you were gone, she was only happy when she saw you, Dani, on TV,” Justin said as he came over to the now happy family of three.

“Sorry,” Kevin said as he looked over at Emma.  They hadn’t really prepared her for what was going to be happening.  They didn’t even explain what was going to happen other than that she was going to be on TV and had to be good.  She was probably also tired since she hadn’t slept at all on the way to the studio.

“Emma, we are going to be on TV now,” Dani said as she rubbed the little girls back.

“Mommy on TV too,” Emma said as she looked up at Dani.

“Yes, Mommy is going to be on TV too,” Dani said as she looked down at the little girl in her arms.

“Emma, do you have to go potty before we go on TV,” Dani asked the little girl who nodded her head.  Dani and Emma disappeared into the dressing room bathroom.  Dani sat her on the toilet and held on to her while she went.  Emma, of course, started moving around and the toilet was automatic, so it flushed on her.

“Mommy,” Emma cried as she reached out for Dani who got her off of the toilet right away, wiped her and pulled up her underwear.

“Emma, Mommy is going to go potty, go out with Daddy,” Dani said.

“Daddy,” Emma ran into his legs crying when Dani let her out of the bathroom after she had helped Emma wash her hands.

“Emma, what is wrong?” Kevin asked having no idea what went on inside the bathroom.

“Daddy, the potty almost sucked me in,” Emma cried into her father’s chest.

“Oh Emma,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back.  Emma stuck her thumb in her mouth and quieted down quickly.  “Daddy, it scary,” Emma said.

“Emma are you ready to be on TV,” Kevin asked the little girl that he was still thrilled to call his daughter.  Emma just nodded her head.

It was soon enough that they were called back to the set for the rest of the show.  “Emma, can you walk out there,” Kevin said as he sat her down.  He had to go find a hyper-energetic Maci who had jumped out of his arms and ran away on the short walk to the set.

“Emma how are you today,” Rachel asked the little girl who was hiding behind Dani’s leg.

“Good,” Emma said quietly but didn’t come out of her hiding spot.  She was acting very shy right now.

“Emma, I heard you like to color, do you want to come over here and color me a picture that we can put on the fridge,” Rachel said as she pointed to the fridge.

“Mommy too,” Emma said quietly.  She didn’t know what was going on, all she knew was that she was supposed to be good.

“Yea your Mommy can come too,” Rachel said as Emma and Dani went over to the little kids table that Rachel had set up for her to color a picture on.

While Emma was drawing her picture, Kevin and Dani were over talking with Justin, the dog trainer about how to train Riley and Maci about how to act with a baby and such.  Some of the tips Justin gave was having Riley and Maci on leashes for the first couple of days that the new baby was in the house.  That way if they get out of control, they can easily grab them.  “Okay now we are going to set them down and go for a walk with them,” Justin said.

“Emma, do you want to ride in the stroller,” Rachel asked Emma who was standing behind her with her picture of her, Riley and Maci done and, in her hands, watching.  Emma nodded and ran over to her Dad who gave Maci’s leash to Dani and picked up Emma and put her in the stroller.

Emma slept soundly on the way home.  She was so tired and now it was almost too late for her nap, but it was also too long of a ride to try to keep her awake for, so they let her sleep.

It had been about two weeks since the small Jonas family had been on Rachel Ray.  Today, Kevin, Dani, and Emma were heading to New York City to go to a TV set.  “Emma, we are going to go play on a TV set?” Kevin told the little girl.

The Jonas Brothers were going on tour in about a month and today was the live tour announcement.  They were using an actual TV news set and were making it be like a news telecast.  They even had a newscaster from a local New York news station coming to be on the tour announcement.

“Emma, do you have to go potty before we get in the car?” Kevin asked his little girl who was accompanying him and Dani to the TV set today.

“Daddy, I poop before we get into the cars,” Emma said as she ran towards the bathroom.  Kevin followed after her, put the potty seat on the toilet, pulled down her pants, and sat her on the potty.

“Emma yell when you are done?” Kevin said as he left the bathroom, leaving the door open just a little bit so he could hear her when she was done.

“Daddy, the poops come out fast,” Emma said, as he heard some plops still making their way into the toilet, when her Dad came back and checked on her in a couple of minutes.

“Okay, Emma are you done?” Kevin asked her as he came in a couple minutes later with a pull up.  Emma was potty trained whenever she was awake, but when she was sleeping, she still had accidents, even if it was just a nap.

“Yea, the poops are all outs of me now,” Emma said as Kevin helped her stand up.  He wiped her with some toilet paper first, he then grabbed a warm washcloth wiped her bottom again just to make sure her bottom was clean.  He then helped her step into a pull up and pulled up her pants.

“Daddy, where are we going?” Emma asked when Kevin was putting her in the car a couple minutes later.

“We are going to see Glammy, Grandpapa, Uncle Joe, Uncle Nick, and Uncle Frankie,” Kevin said to his little girl.

“What are we going to do with them?” Emma asked.  She always had to know what they were going to do and where they were going to go.

“You and Mommy are going to stay with Grandpapa, Glammy, and Uncle Frankie while Daddy, Uncle Joe and Uncle Nick do a live chat,” Kevin said.

“Like what you, Mommy, and me did,” Emma said excited.

“Yea exactly like that, except it will be only Daddy, Uncle Joe and Uncle Nick,” Kevin said.

“Daddy, I’m sleepy,” Emma said as Kevin was getting ready to shut the car door.  It was getting near her naptime.

“You can go to sleep, Emma Bear,” Kevin said as he closed the car door.

“Dani, we have to get going,” Kevin went in the house looking for Dani who he found in the kitchen getting snacks for Emma for when Kevin and his brothers were doing the live chat.

“I know, I am just getting a couple of snacks for Emma and I am ready,” Dani said.  Dani had already packed up an activity bag for Emma that included two new coloring books and some new crayons, a couple of books and a little wind-up frog that hopped just to keep her entertained for a while.

“Does Emma have a pull-up on?” Dani asked.  They hadn’t brought a pull up with them when they went to New York for Rachel Ray and well Emma fell asleep on the way home she ended up having an accident.

“Yes, she has a pull up on and is already asleep,” Kevin said as him and Dani went and got in the car.  The drive to the TV studio was uneventful.  Emma slept the whole way.  It gave Kevin and Dani some time to talk about the new baby.

“Here, I’ll get Emma out of the car, you go on in,” Kevin said as they pulled into a parking space.  Emma was still sleeping soundly.  Kevin and Dani had opted out of having a driver for this trip because since Sir had come to the door, Emma was still a little fearful of strangers.  They also didn’t want her to freak out and have the day be ruined.

“Come on Emma Bear,” Kevin said as he unstrapped her out of her car seat and picked her up into his arms.  She was still sound asleep.

When they got into the studio, the first thing Kevin did was make a beeline for his dressing room.  He found Dani and a couch in his dressing room.  Kevin laid the little girl on the couch, and put the blanket that Dani was holding out to him over the little girl.

“I am going to head out there, I think we are having a meeting to find out tour dates,” Kevin whispered to his wife as he left Emma and Dani in his dressing room.

Emma woke up about a half an hour after Kevin left to go to the meeting to find out tour dates.  Emma had slept for over two hours, which meant that she wouldn’t be cranky or grumpy tonight.

“Hi Emma Bug,” Dani said using the nickname she gave her on the first day they had her.

“Hi Mommy,” Emma said as she came over and snuggled into her.  Emma liked her snuggle time after a nap with her parents.

“Emma, should we read some books,” Dani said as she reached over for the bag that had books in it, knowing that was one of Emma’s favorite things to do.

“Yea,” Emma said as she snuggled into Dani under the blanket that was now covering both Emma and Dani’s legs.

The live chat started about two and a half hours later.  Dani and Emma were sitting in the control room watching the live chat from the TV’s.  Emma had found her new coloring books and was coloring in them by the door.

“Hi Uncle Nick,” Dani heard on the TV screen a couple minutes later.  “Can I sit on you?”

“Emma aren’t you supposed to be with your Mommy,” Nick asked the little girl who had now managed to climb onto his lap.

“Mommy was boring, so I came to find you,” Emma said.

“Oh, did you Emma,” Nick said as she giggled a little bit.

“Where is the computer screen?” Emma asked confused.  There were people here with cameras on their shoulders but no computer screen.  This wasn’t like Mommy, Daddy, and her live chat a couple of weeks ago.

“There are cameras, no computer screens,” Nick said to her as she looked confused but went along with it.

“Hi Daddy,” Emma said as she waved at Kevin.

“Hi, Uncle Jimmy,” Emma said as she waved at Joe and giggled, she found it funny that they were calling him Jimmy instead of Joe.

“What’s your name?” Emma asked the guy sitting next to her and Nick.  She hadn’t seen him or known him.

“Em, this is Frank, he is here to help us with this broadcast.”

“Oh,” was all Emma said, she then opened her coloring book and started coloring a picture.

Meanwhile Dani was in the control room looking for Emma, she had disappeared and apparently took her bag and coloring book with her, when she heard a little giggle from behind her.  Dani spun around and saw her sitting in Nick’s lap on the TV screen coloring in one of her coloring books.

“Hey, can I be the next one to call and tell them the city they are going to be in,” Dani asked Paul.  She wanted to know why her daughter was sitting on Nick’s lap.

“Sure,” Paul said, you will be next.

“Hi Emma,” Dani said a couple minutes later into the phone.

“Hi Mommy,” Emma squealed.

“Are you having fun?” Dani asked her.

“Yea, I am coloring Uncle Nick the picture of the fishy in my coloring book,” Emma said.

“Well Emma can you tell Uncle Nick this?” Dani asked her.

“Yes Mommy,” Emma said.

“Can you tell him that they are going to Wisconsin,” Dani said.

“Yes Mommy, I will tell him,” Emma said.

“Okay, you be good for Uncle Nick and let me talk to him for a minute,” Dani said, hoping that her brother-in-law would be okay with having her on his lap for the rest of the chat.

“I will Mommy,” Emma said as she handed the phone to her Uncle.

“Hi Nick, do you want me to come gets Emma?” Dani asked her brother-in-law.

“No, she is fine,” Nick said.

“Thank you, Nick,” Dani said, “and Emma knows where you are going next.”

“I love you Mommy,” Emma yelled into the phone as Nick hung up the phone.

“Okay now that long conversation is done, Emma where are we going next?”

“I don’t remember, it was a very long name,” Emma said as she tried to think but couldn’t come up with anything.

“Emma was its Wisconsin?” Nick said knowing that was the place they were going next.

“Yea that was it,” Emma said as they showed the map again and then went on to the other concerts.

“Uncle Nick, when are we going to be done?” Emma asked him after she presented him with her picture of the fish that she had colored orange to be a goldfish and the bubbles were blue.

“Emma, do you want to go find Mommy,” Nick asked her as she nodded her head and climbed off of his lap.

“Here Nick, I’ll take her,” Joe said as he came over and took her hand and took her to where Dani was.

Finding Hope – Chapter 8

It had been now been close to three months since the live broadcast.  A lot had changed, for starters last month the Jonas Brothers canceled their tour two days before the tour started and then eventually broke up.  Let’s just say that October was a very stressful month for both the brothers and fans.

Dani was now over 6 months pregnant.  The small family of three was heading to Texas for Thanksgiving weekend today.  It was going to be Emma’s first plane ride.

“Emma Bear, it’s time to wake up,” Kevin said as he walked back into her bedroom after taking a shower and finding Emma sprawled out in the middle of their bed with all of the covers off of her sound asleep.  Kevin and Danielle had moved Emma to her own room a couple of months ago, to get her used to sleeping in her own room before they moved, and the baby came.

“It’s too early Daddy,” Emma said when she opened her eyes and yawned.

“I know it is early, but we are going to see Glammy and Grandpapa, today,” Kevin said as he pulled her out of bed.

“Okay go brushes your teeth, go potty, change out of pajamas and then we will head to the airport,” Kevin said as he sat her down on the floor to go do those things.

“Emma, here is your toothbrush,” Kevin said as he handed Emma her pink toothbrush that already had strawberry toothpaste on it.

“Daddy, I am done,” Emma said once she had spit in the sink, she then opened her mouth for her Dad to go around once more and make sure she got everything.

“Okay, let’s go potty and get into clean clothes and then we will head to the airport,” Kevin said as he picked Emma up and sat her on the toilet for her to do her business.

“Okay Emma are you done,” Kevin asked when he came back a couple minutes later with a new pull-up and some clothes.  They assumed that she was going to sleep on the way to the airport in the car.  Emma nodded her head tiredly.

When Kevin helped Emma off of the toilet, he noticed that she had diarrhea.  “Emma does your tummy hurt?” Kevin asked as he wiped her little bottom with a washcloth.  Emma just nodded her head.

He picked her little body up.  “Does it feel like you are going to throw up?” Kevin asked the little girl as Emma shook her head no.  “Shhh,” Kevin said as Emma started to cry.  “It’s okay Emma Bear.”

Kevin and Dani had decided to hire a car service to take them to the airport this time.  Plus, that way they could get the escort that would escort them through security and to the waiting plane.

Kevin and Dani were still running around the house packing last minute essentials while Emma curled up on the edge of the couch and had fallen asleep yet once again.

The limo service picked them up right on time.  Kevin first took Emma’s car seat out to the car and strapped it in.  They were going to be taking the car seat with them on the trip.  Then Kevin came in the house and gently picked up a sleeping Emma and took her out to the car without waking her up.

“We will be right out,” Kevin whispered to the limo driver as he was strapping Emma into the seat.  The driver nodded his head as Kevin turned around and went back into the house to help Dani finish packing quickly.

“Dani, the car is here,” Kevin yelled at the bottom of the stairs.  She was still upstairs getting packed for the trip.

“Coming, I think we have everything,” Dani said as she left the bedroom and came down the stairs dragging a suitcase along with her.  The hour-long ride to the airport was quiet.  Dani even fell asleep for a while.

“Kevin, can you get Emma out,” Dani said to Kevin as he got out of the car with his backpack that was a carry on.

“Yes, that is what I am doing,” Kevin said to his wife who was helping the car driver get everything out of the car.

“Come on Emma,” Kevin said as he got her unstrapped from her car seat and held her in his arms.  An attendant was already there with a luggage cart for them to put everything on.  “Okay, Emma can you stand right here,” Kevin asked the little girl as he sat her down on the ground, while he helped to unload the rest of the bags.

“Daddy, what are we doing here?” Emma said as she rubbed her eyes and yawned.  She was still waking up from her nap.

“We are going to take a plane and go see Grandpapa and Glammy,” Kevin said as he went in the car and unattached the car seat from the back of the car and put it on the luggage cart.

They checked all of their bags and themselves into the airport including the car seat which had now been packed away into a car seat bag with wheels, made easier for traveling.

“Emma, do you have to go potty, before we get on the plane,” Dani asked Emma.  They were waiting at the gate and had about fifteen minutes before first class would start boarding.  Emma nodded her head as Dani stood up and grabbed her purse and carry-on.

“Also, when you get back, I am going to head to the bathroom too before we board,” Kevin said as Dani nodded her head.  Emma and Dani walked to the nearest bathroom.

“Come on Emma,” Dani said as she pulled down her pants.  Dani sat Emma on the toilet, and she did her business.  Dani then helped Emma change into her pink underwear that they had brought with them.  “Emma, Mommy has to go potty too, and then we will get on the plane,” Dani said.

They were on the plane about ten minutes later.  “Emma you get to sit by the window,” Dani said when they got on the plane.  Emma started crying as soon as she sat down.  She didn’t like the window seat.

“Emma what’s wrong?” Dani said as she sat down by her on the plane and hugged her.

“I want to sit by both Mommy and Daddy,” Emma cried out.

“Emma, I think you will really like the window seat,” Dani said to the little girl who was now shaking in her arms.

“Okay honey, you can sit in the middle of us okay,” Dani said as she switched places with Emma.  “Is that better Emma?”  Emma just nodded her little head as she wrapped her arms around her little chest.

Once the plane was loaded and they started moving, Emma started crying and freaking out.  “Shhh Emma,” Dani said as Emma leaned into her sobbing.

“It’s okay Emma,” Dani kept on saying as the plane was going up.  Once it was up in the air for a couple of minutes, Emma started crying again.

“Daddy,” Emma sobbed as she leaned into him and sobbed.

“Emma, shhh,” Kevin said as he tried to get her to calm down.

“Daddy, my tummy is hurting,” Emma said.

“Oh Emma, do you have to go poops?” Kevin said using Emma’s word for when she had to go potty.  Emma just shook her head.

“Emma does it feel like you are going to throw up?” Kevin asked next.  Emma nodded her head a little bit as she turned pale green.  Kevin leaned over and grabbed the puke bag and held it open in front of her mouth just in time for her to throw up the cereal that she had ate that morning.

“Oh Emma,” Kevin said as she coughed and vomited in the half full bag one more time.  “Are you done honey,” Kevin asked the little girl who nodded her head a little bit and started crying.

“Daddy, my tummy still hurts though,” Emma sobbed.

“Emma, shhh,” Kevin said as he grabbed another puke bag and pressed the cabin light and flight attendant button right before Emma had puked all over the back of the seat in front of her.  Nothing had gotten on her surprisingly though.

This went on for most of the five-hour flight.  Thankfully, the cabin crew was very nice in helping and they got them extra supplies and they helped with whatever they needed.  Emma finally fell asleep on Dani about a half an hour before the plane was due to land.

“I wish she didn’t have to get sick,” Dani said as she looked down at the sleeping little girl who was now cuddled into her side.

“Yea, at least the plane ride is almost done, and she is sleeping at least,” Kevin said as the pilot came across the loudspeaker and said that they were landing and to put your seats back up into the upright position and put tray tables away, etc.

The plane landed in the Dallas, Texas airport about twenty minutes later.  Emma had woken up right when the plane was landing.  “Emma let’s get off of the plane,” Dani said as she pushed her into the aisle so she could start making her way to the door.

Kevin was following Emma off of the plane.  He made sure to apologize to the flight attendant crew, because his daughter had made such a mess.  They had tried to clean it up as best as they could, but it still needed some deep cleaning.  He also thanked them a bunch too, because they were so good at helping them get bigger bags, and whatever else they needed.

“Are you feeling better honey,” Kevin said as he got down in front of her.  Emma nodded her head a little bit and then ran into her father’s arms.

“Come on sweetie, we have to go get our luggage and then we will go see Grandpapa and Glammy,” Kevin said as he stood up and grabbed onto Emma’s hand.

When they got in the car, Kevin texted his mom and told them they had landed and were on their way.  The half an hour drive to Kevin’s parent’s house was quiet.  Emma had fallen asleep again, for the third time today.  These past couple of weeks they had such a hard time getting Emma to wake up, all she wanted to do was sleep, and sleep more.  Emma loved to sleep before these past couple of weeks, so they hadn’t really seen that much of a change in her other than it had been harder to get her to wake up.

Emma woke up right when they were turning into the driveway.  “Do we get to see Glammy and Grandpapa now,” Emma asked as she looked around and saw that the car had just stopped in the driveway.

“Emma, can you take your bag please,” Dani asked the little girl who was standing by the car still looking tired.  She nodded as Dani handed her the little pink backpack.

“Hi Glammy,” Emma said as she gave her a big hug.  She let her parents do most of the talking, standing in front of her parents.  When she opened her mouth to tell her Mom that she didn’t feel good again, she coughed a little bit and threw up all over the floor.

“Oh Emma,” Denise said as she rushed into the kitchen to get some towels to wipe up the vomit.  “Mommy,” Emma cried as she coughed a little bit and threw up again all over the floor.

“Oh honey,” Dani said as she rubbed the little girls back.

“Uh Mom, we need a bucket in here,” Kevin said as Emma threw up all over the floor and herself once again.

“Here you are honey,” Denise said as she got the bucket under her mouth just in time for her to throw up again.

“Oh sweetie,” Denise said as she rubbed the little girls back.

“Mommy,” Emma cried out for her Mom.

“I am right here honey,” Dani said as she also rubbed the little girls back.

“Are you done honey,” Dani said as she rubbed the little girls back as she sputtered and coughed some more right before a big mouthful came up.

“Poor thing, I hope she feels better soon,” Denise said as she felt the little girl’s head.  “Well, she doesn’t have a fever, so that is a good sign,” Denise said.  “Let’s hope it is just a little tummy bug.”

“Yea she threw up the whole way here on the plane too,” Kevin sighed.

“Emma do you want to go get cleaned up,” Dani asked the little girl when she was done throwing up.  Emma nodded her head as she ran into her mom crying a little bit.

“Come on let’s go upstairs and do a bath,” Dani asked the little girl who nodded her head.  When Dani went to stand up, she put her arms up indicating that she wanted Dani to carry her.  Dani picked up the little girl who just laid her head on her Mom’s shoulder.

“Come on honey, let’s go potty and then we will take a bath,” Dani said as she sat Emma on the floor and opened the toilet lid.  She then took down her pants and sat her on the toilet.

She then started filling up the tub with warm water.  Once the tub was filled, Dani turned to Emma.  “Emma Bug are you ready for your bath,” Dani said as she lifted Emma off of the toilet.  Dani then grabbed some toilet paper and wiped her little bottom.  She helped her take off her shirt and then she lifted her into the tub.

They were about halfway through the bath when Emma started coughing.  Dani thought that she was going to be sick again, but all she did was cough.  Not little light coughs, more like big deep coughs.  It concerned Dani for a moment, but as soon as it started, it stopped.

“Come here Emma, let’s get out of the tub,” Dani said as Emma looked at Dani.  She was so tired; it was almost like she was ready to go to bed again.  This concerned Dani for a moment, but then she realized that she was sick and that she was probably tired.

After she got Emma dried off, she tried to help her put on clothes when Emma started crying again.  “Emma, what is wrong?” Dani asked the little girl.

“I want Daddy shirt,” Emma cried as she stood there shivering from being so cold.  She had refused to get dressed.

“Here, why don’t we put on some underwear and pants and this shirt for now,” Dani said as she held up a purple pajama shirt that had butterflies on it.

“No, I want Daddy shirt,” Emma cried as she looked at the clothes that her Mom had in her hand.

“Here why don’t we put on some underwear and pants,” Dani said in hopes of getting the crying little girl to put on her shirt.

“Socks too,” Emma said as she shivered.

“Yea, I have your socks right here Emma,” Dani said as she put some socks on her feet.

“I want Daddy shirt,” Emma started crying after she had her pants and socks on.

“Emma, how about we put this shirt on and then we will go downstairs and talk to Daddy,” Dani said as she tried to get her to put the purple pajama shirt that she had in her hands over her head.

“No Daddy shirt,” Emma cried.

After Emma was done with her bath and dressed again, they went downstairs.  “Daddy,” Emma cried as she ran at him.  His mom had food out for them to eat, so he was eating a radish.

“Emma, are you all cleaned up?” Kevin asked as he noticed that she was in new clothes and her hair had been washed.

“I want Daddy shirt,” Emma cried as she climbed up onto his lap and started having another coughing fit.  Kevin, Dani, and Denise all exchanged a worried glance as the coughing fit stopped as quickly as it had started.

“She has been asking ever since she got out of the bath,” Dani said as she came and sat down by Kevin and rubbed the little girls back.

“Come on Emma, let’s go find a Daddy shirt,” Kevin said as he stood up with her in his arms and walked out of the kitchen and through the living room where Emma started coughing again.

“Emma,” Kevin said as he rubbed her little back as she turned pale green once again today.  Kevin found a bucket sitting on the couch from earlier that he grabbed and held under her mouth just in time for her to throw up.

“Oh sweetie,” Kevin said as he sat down on the couch and rubbed her back while she continued to throw up.

“I want Daddy shirt,” Emma cried after she was done throwing up.

“Come on let’s go find one of Daddy’s shirts,” Kevin said to the little girl who was crying in his arms.  When they got upstairs Kevin sat Emma down on the bed while he went over and looked in the suitcase to which he pulled out three different shirts that she could wear.

“Emma, which one do you want,” Kevin asked the little girl who shook her head and started crying.

“I want Daddy shirt,” Emma cried as she ran to the suitcase and started tearing through it.  When she couldn’t find the shirt that she wanted she just stood there and cried.

“Emma, what shirt do you want?” Kevin said as he sat down beside her on the floor.

“I want Daddy shirt,” Emma cried as she sat down on the floor and looked at the suitcase.  “It’s not here,” Emma said through her little sobs.  This was when Kevin realized what shirt she wanted.

“Emma, do you want the shirt from the first night you were with Mommy and Daddy,” Kevin asked the little girl who nodded her head as she sniffled.

“Emma, Daddy didn’t bring that shirt,” Kevin said as she looked at Kevin with an ‘I already realized that’ look on her face.

“Daddy,” Emma said as she sat on her Dad’s lap and just cried until she started coughing again.

“Emma, here is the bucket,” Kevin said as he held the bucket up by her mouth in case she needed to vomit.  Emma coughed a couple more times before a mouthful of vomit came out of her mouth and into the bucket.  This is when Emma started having diarrhea.

“Oh honey,” Kevin said as he rubbed the little girls back as she continued to vomit and have diarrhea at the same time.

“Daddy,” Emma cried when she was finally done throwing up.

“Oh, Emma Bear,” Kevin said as Emma just laid in his lap and cried.

“Daddy, I don’t like being sick,” Emma cried into her Dad’s chest.

“I know you don’t Emma, but let’s get you all cleaned up,” Kevin said as Emma nodded her head.

“Emma, sit here while Daddy goes and gets you some clean clothes,” Kevin said as he sat Emma on the toilet for her to do her business.  He started the water and put some bubbles in it to make it more fun for Emma.

Kevin left the bathroom and went into the bedroom and got some clean pajamas for her and a pull-up, just in case she had diarrhea again.  He came back to the room to find Emma sitting there crying.

“Oh honey, I know you don’t feel good,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back as she cried.

“Are you done honey?” Kevin asked his daughter as she nodded her head and sniffled a little bit.

“Okay Emma, let’s get you in the bath, how does that sound?” Kevin asked the little girl who was still sitting on the toilet.

“Daddy shirt,” Emma cried.  She really wanted her Dad’s shirt right now.  It had to be the specific one that she wore on the first night she came to live with her Mommy and Daddy.

“Daddy is going to call Ziti and Uncle B and see if one of them can send Daddy’s shirt to us,” Kevin said as Emma nodded her head.

“When is it going to be here,” Emma asked as she looked like she was about to cry again.

“Emma, it should be here tomorrow,” Kevin said as Emma started crying.

“Oh honey, shhh,” Kevin said as he rubbed the little girls back.

“Come on let’s get you in the bath,” Kevin said as he helped her stand up.  “Oh honey,” Kevin said as he noticed that Emma had diarrhea again.

“Come on we will do this quick and then Daddy promises to call Zia Dina and Uncle B and ask them to send the shirt in the mail for you, okay,” Kevin asked as he helped Emma into the tub.  Five minutes later, Kevin was helping Emma out of the tub and was wrapping her in a fluffy bath towel to keep her nice and warm.

“Come on Emma, let’s get you in some warm comfy pajamas and then I am sure you can ask Glammy and Grandpapa if you can lay on the couch downstairs and watch TV,” Kevin said as he helped her put on her pullup and pants.

“Daddy are you and Mommy and going to get mad at me if I use my pullup,” Emma asked her Dad very curiously.

“No Mommy and Daddy won’t get mad at you, but it is only because you are sick, once you are done being sick and if you use it you will get in trouble,” Kevin said as Emma nodded.

“I’m cold Daddy,” Emma said as she shivered.

“I know Daddy has a shirt right here for you,” Kevin said as he put the shirt over her head.

“Daddy shirt tomorrow in mail from Uncle B and Ziti?” Emma clarified.

“Yep, that is right, Daddy will call them right now okay,” Kevin said as Emma nodded.

“Where is Mommy?” Emma asked as she waited for her Dad to stand up.

“Mommy is downstairs talking with Glammy and Grandpapa,” Kevin said as Emma put her arms up for him to carry her.

“Come here Emma,” Kevin said as picked her up and carried her downstairs to where Dani, Denise, and Paul were hanging out in the kitchen.

“Grandpapa,” Emma squealed when she saw her grandfather sitting by her mother.

“Hi Emma, I heard you weren’t feeling the best,” Paul said as Emma shook her head and snuggled into her father once more.

“Daddy shirt,” Emma said as she started crying once again.

“Yea, Daddy is going to call Zia Dina and Uncle B and see if they can ship Daddy’s shirt to you,” Kevin said as Emma nodded her head and then leaned her head into his chest and stuck her thumb in her mouth.

“Emma, do you want to stay here with Mommy, Glammy and Grandpapa while Daddy calls Ziti and Uncle B or do you want to go to the couch,” Kevin asked his daughter.

“Mommy,” Emma said as she reached out for her mother who was sitting on a bar stool eating a cracker with some cheese.  Dani took her from Kevin and let her snuggle into her.

“Mommy, I sleepy,” Emma said as she closed her eyes and snuggled into Dani some more.  Emma was sound asleep in no time.

“Here I will take her to the couch,” Paul said as he stood up and lifted his granddaughter into his arms.  He then walked over to the living room and laid her down on the couch.  He covered her up and before leaving he gave her a light kiss on the forehead.

“I hope she starts feeling better soon,” Paul said as he came back into the kitchen and sat down at the counter.

“Yea me too,” Dani sighed as she got up off of the stool and went into the living room to check on Emma.

Finding Hope – Chapter 9

Kevin, Dani, and Emma had arrived in Texas the day before for the Thanksgiving weakened.  Tomorrow was Thanksgiving.  Today Joe was arriving for the weekend.  It was still a little rocky amongst the brothers.  They really hadn’t seen or spoken to each other since the day that they announced the break-up on Good Morning America.  Kevin was hoping that he could at least talk to Joe somewhat this weekend.  Nick was flying in early tomorrow morning and leaving right after dinner.   It was just as well, Kevin thought, because he was the one that broke up the band.

Emma was still very sick; she was not getting much better.  She had woken up three times in the middle of the night to throw up.

“How are you feeling this morning Emma?” Denise said when Kevin and Emma came downstairs.  Dani was still sleeping upstairs.

“Icky,” Emma coughed as she snuggled into her Dad who was carrying her.

“Poor thing,” Denise said as she came over and felt Emma’s head to find it warm.

“I think she has a fever,” Denise said as Kevin felt her forehead.

“She is feeling a little warm,” Kevin agreed.

“Let me go find a thermometer to take her temperature,” Denise said as she disappeared before anyone could say anything to her.

“Emma do you feel hot?” Kevin asked his daughter who nodded her head and leaned it on her Dad’s shoulder.

“Emma, does your tummy still hurt?” Kevin asked Emma as she nodded her head.

“Here, I found one that works,” Denise said as she came in carrying a thermometer.  She had looked at three different ones and two of them didn’t want to work for her.

“Emma, do you want Glammy or Daddy to take your temperature,” Denise said as Emma looked at her grandmother.

“Daddy,” Emma said quietly as she snuggled into him.  Denise gave the thermometer to Kevin who took her temperature.

“Oh Emma, you have a fever, 101.2” Kevin said as he felt her forehead.  “Poor thing,” he added as he kissed her forehead.

“Daddy, my tummy is,” Emma started saying, but didn’t have enough time to finish before she puked all over the floor, herself, and her Dad.

“Oh Emma, let’s go take a bath, and then we will come downstairs and cuddle,” Kevin said as he carried his puke covered daughter upstairs where he got a bath running.

“Mommy,” Emma yelled when they walked through the bedroom to get to the bathroom.

“Emma, Mommy is sleeping, let’s not wake her up,” Kevin scolded his daughter who just nodded.

“Emma do you have to go potty,” Kevin asked his daughter who nodded her head.  Kevin sat Emma down on the ground and put Emma’s potty seat on the toilet.  He then pulled down her pants and pullup and then lifted Emma onto her potty.

“Daddy, I poop too,” Emma said as she started having a bout of diarrhea.

“It is okay honey,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back.

“Daddy, I’m cold,” Emma shivered as she sat on the toilet.

“Emma, Daddy is going to go get changed and then he will be back to get you in the bath, okay,” Kevin said as Emma nodded her head as she had more diarrhea.

“Are you done?” Kevin asked when he came back a while later in new clothes.  He still had to shower, so he was going to shower after he gave Emma her bath.  Emma just nodded her head as she reached up for her Dad.

“Just a minute Em,” Kevin said as he turned off the water and put some bubbles in the water to make it more fun for Emma.

“Okay Emma let’s stand up,” Kevin said as he helped his daughter stand up and get off the toilet.  He grabbed some toilet paper and wiped her.

“Come on honey, let’s get in the tub,” Kevin said as he lifted her into the tub.

“Daddy, I don’t like being sick,” Emma said as Kevin was washing her hair.   He had no clue how, but she got vomit in her hair too.

“I know you don’t like being sick honey, I don’t think anyone does,” Kevin said as Emma started coughing again.  Kevin rubbed Emma’s back as she coughed.

“Okay are we done,” Kevin asked his daughter a couple minutes later, she nodded her head as she reached up for Kevin who picked her up and set her down by the tub.  He grabbed a towel and wrapped her in it.

“Okay Emma, here are your pajamas,” Kevin said as he helped her step into her pull-up.

“Daddy shirt,” Emma said as she started crying.  She didn’t understand why it wasn’t there, and it was tomorrow already.

“Oh honey, it will be here today, I promise,” Kevin said as Emma continued to cry.

“Daddy, I’m going to throw up,” Emma said as Kevin picked her up and sat her in front of the toilet, just in time for her to throw up.

“Shhh, it’s okay,” Kevin said as he rubbed his daughters back while she continued to throw up in the toilet.

“Come on let’s get you in your pajamas,” Kevin said after she was done throwing up.

“Daddy, I’m cold,” Emma cried.

“I know that is why we are going to get you in your pajamas,” Kevin said as he helped her get into her pants and shirt.

Emma, Daddy has to take a shower, do you want to go cuddle with Mommy or do you want to go downstairs with Glammy?” Kevin asked his daughter.

“Cuddle with Mommy,” Emma said as Kevin led her out to the still dark room where Dani was sleeping on the bed.  He lifted her up onto the bed where she cuddled up with Dani immediately and closed her eyes.

By the time Kevin got out of the shower, Dani and Emma were already downstairs.

“Daddy, Glammy made me some applesauces for breakfasts,” Emma said excitedly as she hopped off of her stool and ran over to him about halfway to him, she made a dead stop.  “I’m going to throw up,” Emma said as she covered her mouth with her little hand.  Kevin grabbed the nearest garbage can and thrust it under her mouth for her to throw up all of the applesauce that she had just ate for breakfast, plus more.

“Oh Emma,” Kevin said as Emma continued to throw up.

“Daddy,” Emma cried after she was done throwing up and ran into his arms.

“Come here Emma,” Kevin said as he picked up his little girl.  She immediately stuck her thumb in her mouth and closed her eyes.  She went limp and started breathing deep a couple minutes later.  Kevin went and laid her on the couch in the living room and covered her up with a blanket.  He gave her a kiss on the forehead before leaving quietly and heading back to the kitchen for breakfast.

“She is sleeping,” Kevin said as he sat down next to his Dad at the island.

“It’s tough having sick kids isn’t it?” Paul said as Kevin looked exhausted.

“Yea, she woke up three times last night to puke, this is her fourth or fifth time this morning, I think,” Kevin said.  He couldn’t even remember, it just seemed like every time he turned around, she was puking.

It was later on that afternoon when Joe arrived at the Jonas Compound as the brothers called it.  “Hi,” Joe said when he saw Kevin sitting in the living room.  Kevin was watching TV on a low volume while Emma was cuddled into him sound asleep, covered in multiple blankets and a bucket next to her.

“What happened here?” Joe asked when he saw the blankets and the bucket.

“Em is sick, we think it might be the flu, but we aren’t sure, she has been basically puking non-stop or sleeping all afternoon,” Kevin said as Emma moved a little bit.  Kevin immediately reached for the bucket that was sitting by Emma’s head in case she would need it.  Emma however stayed sleeping and did not wake up.

“Thank goodness she didn’t wake up, we have already had to throw away one bucket just this afternoon, because we couldn’t get it too stop smelling,” Kevin said exhausted.  He was exhausted and just wanted to stretch his legs.

“When did this start?” Joe asked looking over at his poor sleeping niece who wasn’t feeling the best right now.

“Yesterday on the plane, she puked countless times last night and then woke up three times to puke in the middle of the night.  We did actually get one in the toilet this morning, it was after her bath this morning, but other than that we haven’t been able to get her to the bathroom,” Kevin said.

“Poor thing,” Joe said as he looked at his niece.

“Here, why don’t you take a break, I’ll sit with her for a while,” Joe said.

“Thanks,” Kevin said.  He didn’t need to be told twice; he was ready for a break.  He had been sitting in the same position for the past three and a half hours while Emma slept peacefully.  This position was also starting to make his legs fall asleep.

Joe sat down on the couch and immediately pulled Emma into his lap, while Kevin went to the bathroom and checked in on his pregnant wife and the rest of his family who was all talking in the kitchen.

A couple minutes after Joe sat down with Emma, she woke up and shot straight up in his lap.

“Emma, are you okay?” Joe asked as he reached for the bucket as Emma put her little hand over her mouth.  Joe barely had time to get the bucket under her mouth before she started puking.

“Shhh, get it all out,” Joe said as he rubbed her little back and tried not to lose his cookies too.  In a matter of seconds though, Kevin and Dani were in the room with them, along with both of his parents.

“Come here Emma,” Kevin said as he picked the crying little girl out of Joe’s lap after she was done throwing up a couple minutes later.

“Daddy shirt,” Emma cried into Kevin’s shoulder as the doorbell rang through the house.  Little Emma jumped in Kevin’s arms as the doorbell went off again.

“Come on Emma, I think I know what is at the door,” Kevin said as Emma picked her head up from Kevin’s shoulder a little and then laid it back down.

“I know you don’t feel good, do you?” Kevin said as Emma cuddled into his shoulder and shivered.

“I think we have a package for an Emma Jonas here,” Paul said as he came into the living room where Emma was snuggled into Kevin’s shoulder.

“Emma, look you have a package,” Dani said as she took the package from Paul.

“Daddy shirt,” Emma said as she sniffled a little bit.

“I think so, should we open it?” Dani said as she sat down on the couch and opened the package to reveal one of Kevin’s shirts in the package with a card and a pink beanie baby hippo.

“Emma, look at what Ziti and Uncle B got you,” Dani said as Kevin sat down by Dani and put Emma in between him and Dani.

“Daddy shirt?” Emma questioned as she started tearing up again.

“Daddy shirt is in here but look at the nice card and the little hippo that is in here for you,” Dani said.  “The card says, ‘Get Well Soon,’ and then inside it says ‘Emma, we hope that this little hippo will make you feel better soon.  Love Ziti and Uncle B.’”

“Emma look,” Kevin said as he grabbed the pink hippo and gave it to Emma who hugged it for a moment with tears still running down her face.

“Daddy, I poop in my pullup,” Emma said as she wiped her tears.

“It’s okay Emma, come on let’s go get you cleaned up honey,” Kevin said as he stood up and then looked at the little girl who was cuddled into Dani’s side at the moment.

“Mommy too,” Emma said as she sniffled a little.

“Yea Mommy can come too if you want her too,” Kevin said as he looked at his wife who nodded her head.

“Okay Em, if you want Mommy to come then you have to stand up,” Dani said as Emma stood up.  As soon as she stood up, she started acting like she was going to throw up again.  Kevin thrust the now empty bucket, thanks to his parents, under her mouth just in time for her to puke whatever was left in her little stomach, which happened to be a lot, into the bucket.

“Shhh, it’s okay Emma,” Dani said as she rubbed the little girls back while she continued to vomit.

“Mommy,” Emma cried out when she was done throwing up for like the hundredth time that day.

“Shhh Emma Bug,” Dani said as Emma ran into her sobbing.

“Come on, we will go get you cleaned up and then you can put on Daddy shirt,” Kevin said.

“Daddy shirt,” Emma said as she sniffled a little bit and wiped her eyes.

“Yea, come on Emma,” Kevin said as he picked her up.  They went upstairs to the bedroom that they were staying in.

“Okay Emma, do you have to go potty before we clean you up?” Kevin asked as Emma nodded her head a little bit.  Kevin sat her on the ground, took down her pants, removed the pull up that was full of poop and sat her on the potty.  She started having diarrhea right then.

“Oh honey,” Kevin said as he rubbed her little back as she started crying again.

“Come on Emma, let’s get you in the bath and then you can put on Daddy shirt,” Dani said as she had filled up the bath with warm soapy water.
“Mommy,” Emma cried as she ran her now naked body into Dani’s side as to get a hug from her.

“Oh honey,” Dani said as she rubbed the crying little girls back as she tried to calm her down.  She obviously wasn’t feeling good and just wanted her Mommy.

“Come on its time for bath and then Daddy shirt,” Dani said.  She had poop all over her bottom, so they weren’t really going to wash her hair or anything, at least not this time.  They were just going to get her bottom all cleaned up.  “Stay standing for Mommy, okay,” Dani said as she rinsed her bottom first and then grabbed a washcloth and put soap on her bottom using the washcloth.  She then rinsed it off.

“Here, go to Daddy, he has a towel all ready for you,” Dani said as she lifted Emma out of the tub, and she ran over to her Dad.

“Daddy,” Emma said as she ran into his legs.

“Hey there Emma.  Here why don’t we dry you off and then we can cuddle, okay,” Kevin said.  He could tell that his little girl was getting tired again and just wanted to snuggle with him or Dani.  Kevin got the little girl dried off pretty quickly.

“Emma, we have to put on pants and then Daddy shirt,” Kevin said when Emma started crying.  She was tired and ready for yet another nap today.

“Daddy shirt,” Emma said as Kevin tried to help her put on pants first.

“Come on pants and then Daddy shirt, look, I have a clean pull up and your pants right here,” Kevin said.

“Daddy, I go pee-pees,” Emma said as she did a little dance.

“Come on Em,” Kevin said as he picked her up and sat her on the toilet and held on to her while she peed.

“Are you done Emma?” Kevin said as she nodded her head.

“Okay,” Kevin said as he helped his little girl stand up and wiped her bottom.  He then helped her step into her pull-up and put on her pants.

“Daddy shirt,” Emma cried as she looked around for it.

“It is right here Emma,” Kevin said as he helped her slip into the overly big shirt.

“Daddy cuddle,” Emma asked as she started crying.

“Come here Emma,” Kevin said as he picked her up and walked out of the bathroom and sat down on the couch in the bedroom.  Emma immediately snuggled into him, stuck her thumb in her mouth, and closed her eyes.

“Is she sleeping?” Dani asked a couple minutes later when she came out of the bathroom.  Kevin just nodded.

“Poor thing,” Dani said as she came over and sat down by her husband and daughter.

“Yea, she fell asleep as soon as we sat down,” Kevin said as he looked down at his daughter who was cuddled into him.

“Poor thing, she has a fever,” Dani said as she felt her little hot head.

“At least she is sleeping now,” Kevin said as he grabbed a blanket and put it over little Emma, she was now shivering in her sleep.

“Yea come on let’s leave her sleep and go downstairs,” Dani said as Kevin laid Emma on the couch next to him and then helped his pregnant wife stand up.

“She is sleeping,” Kevin said to his parents, Frankie, and Joe when they got downstairs.

“I feel awful that she is so sick,” Joe said.  “I just hope that none of us get it.”

Finding Hope – Chapter 10

It was now Thanksgiving Day and Emma was not doing any better.  She still wasn’t able to keep food down, nor did she want any food in her system.  She was still having diarrhea and her cough was now worse than it had been the day before.

“Daddy, my back hurts,” Emma complained as she walked into the bedroom that they were staying in.  Emma and Dani had been downstairs while Kevin finished getting ready for the day.

“Oh Emma, come here,” Kevin said as she ran into his arms crying.  Kevin picked up his little princess and sat down with her on the couch that was in the bedroom.

“My back hurts Daddy,” Emma said as she gripped Kevin’s shirt and sobbed into it.

“Shhh baby, did Mommy give you any medicine for it?” Kevin asked, he was curious if Dani had given her Tylenol or anything for it.

“No, Daddy it hurts,” Emma cried into Kevin.

“Oh honey, shhh,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back very gently.  Emma finally closed her eyes and fell into a peaceful sleep.

Kevin went downstairs to see that Joe was sitting in the living room alone.  He took the chance and sat down next to him.

“Uh, what’s up?” Kevin said awkwardly.

“Uh nothing, just trying to figure out what to do with my life now that the band is done,” Joe said as he teared up.  He couldn’t even think about the band being done.  He thought that the band would never end and that one day they might play shows to sold-out crowds, like Paul McCartney.

“I know how you feel Joe,” Kevin said as he too started tearing up.  “I have no clue what I want to do with my life now, I am thinking that I will go into the business side of things, I mean I have a family now and it is going to be hard to travel with a newborn, so I am trying to figure that out now.”

“Yea, I know what you mean,” Joe said.  “I know I still want to do something with music, but I don’t know what yet.  Ideally, I would love to put together another band, but I don’t really know.  Vulture Magazine wants me to write ‘a tell all’, so I will have that coming up.  I don’t know what else I want to do though.”

“Be sure to share that with us once it is done, I don’t want you saying anything bad about me,” Kevin joked.  He knew the Joe would share it anyways, but he really didn’t want anything bad said about him or anyone else that he decided to write about.

“Don’t worry, I will for sure share it with you, I think it due next week or the week after, but I will for sure let you see it before I send it off,” Joe said.

“Thanks,” Kevin said.  “Have you seen or spoke to Nick since the breakup.”

“Yea, he texted me Tuesday night asking me to go out with him and Olivia, I said no that I couldn’t,” Joe said as he rolled his eyes.  “Have you?”

“Yea he texted me a couple days after the breakup, just to check up on me, but since then no I haven’t heard from him,” Kevin said.  “I just hope that today goes by quickly and smoothly.”

“Yea me too,” Joe agreed as he leaned back into the couch.  It was silent for a couple of minutes before Joe broke the silence.  “Where is Emma?”

“She is sleeping upstairs, her back hurts,” Kevin said.  Just another thing to worry about.  If he didn’t already have enough on his plate, he now had Emma to worry about too.  She seemed to be getting sicker and not better.

“I hope she gets better soon,” Joe said.

“Yea, if she isn’t better when we get home, I think we will take her into the doctor,” Kevin said.

“I don’t think it is diabetes, but you might want to have Nick test her just in case,” Joe said.

“Yea maybe, it is just that I don’t remember Nick having any of the symptoms that Emma has,” Kevin said.

“The only things that are the same are the sleepiness and that she has thrown up so much in the past two days, but I personally don’t think it is diabetes,” Kevin said.  “I am hoping it is just a stomach bug and it will pass.”

“I am sure it is, but with her complaining about her back hurting, I would have Nick check her just to be sure,” Joe said as they heard the doorbell.

“Speak of the devil,” Kevin mumbled to no one in particular.

“I really don’t want this either, but Mom wanted it, so we have to be good and it is only for uh six and a half hours’ tops, knowing him, he will probably leave early anyways or be on the phone with Olivia all day anyways,” Joe said as he rolled his eyes.

“True, I just don’t want to be in a room alone with him, promise me that you won’t leave him in a room alone with me,” Kevin said as Joe nodded.

“I won’t leave you two alone together, at least not today, maybe at Christmas I will,” Joe smirked as he got up and left the room to go see what was going on in the kitchen and if he could help his mom with anything.

“Haha, well I am not going to be here for Christmas anyways, Dani’s pregnant remember,” Kevin yelled after Joe.

Meanwhile upstairs, Emma had just woken up from her nap and didn’t see her parents anywhere to be found.  She looked around for a minute or two, before she realized where she was, she was at her grandparents’ house in Texas, on the couch in her parent’s room.

Emma wasn’t feeling good again and wanted her Mom, so she got up and walked out of the room and down the stairs.  She saw her Uncle Nick standing there talking on the phone to someone.

“Uncle Nicky,” Emma said when she was two steps from the bottom.

“Hi Emma,” Nick said as he waved.  He was talking to his girlfriend on the phone.  He would of rather of spent Thanksgiving with her and her family and not with his family.  His mom wanted them to all be here, so he had to come.  He only planned on staying for a couple of hours though.

It was then that he heard a retching noise come from behind him before little Emma puked all over her feet, the two bottom steps, and the floor.  Nick turned around and saw that Emma had puked.

“Uh Liv, I have to go, my niece just puked,” Nick said.

“Wait Nick is she okay?” Olivia was asking him on the phone.

“Uh I don’t think so, considering she just puked again,” Nick said.

“Okay, tell her that I hope she feels better,” Olivia said as Emma puked again.

“Okay, I will,” Nick said as he hastily hung up the phone and shoved it in his pocket as he walked towards the crying little girl.

“Oh Emma,” Nick said as he tried not to step in the puke.

“I want Mommy, my back hurts,” Emma cried out as Nick swooped her up into his arms as they went and found Dani.

“Mommy my back hurts,” Emma cried when they saw her sitting at the island talking to Paul, Denise, Kevin, and Joe.

“Oh Emma, come here sweetie,” Dani said as she took the crying girl from Nick’s arms.

“Her fever is back,” Dani said as she felt the little girls’ hot head.

“I will go get the medicine,” Kevin said as he pushed past Nick and went to go get Emma’s medicine that she has been taking to help reduce her fever.  Nick followed Kevin and Joe was quick to follow Nick, he didn’t want to leave Kevin and Nick in the same room together.

“How long has she been sick for?” Nick asked Kevin.

“Since Tuesday,” Kevin said as he found the medicine in the living room.

“Oh yea, she threw up, that is why I was carrying her,” Nick said to Kevin.

“Great, just another thing to clean up,” Kevin said as he dropped the medicine off with Dani and then grabbed a rag under the sink with a disinfecting spray to clean up the puke.

“Here Kev, let me do that,” Nick said as he came over and took the rag and disinfecting spray.

“Thanks,” Kevin mumbled.  He wanted to be polite, but at the same time he wanted to punch his little brother in the face.  He was still mad at him for breaking up the band.

“Hey, so do you think you can test Emma, I just want to be sure she doesn’t have diabetes,” Kevin said quietly.  He was hoping that Nick hadn’t heard him, but he was wrong, because Nick looked up at him.

“What makes you think she has diabetes?” Nick asked.

“I don’t know, Joe got the thought stuck in my brain, I guess, but she has lost a lot of weight and the past couple of weeks she has been sleeping more than normal,” Kevin said.

“Kevin, she was still taking daily naps before this,” Nick said.  Nick called one time before the breakup and Kevin was just putting Emma into bed for her afternoon nap.  To say that Emma loved sleeping was an understatement.  Anytime anyone said nap, Emma would fall asleep pretty much right away.

“Yea, whatever,” Kevin said, he wasn’t about to argue with his brother about this.

“I will check her if you want me to,” Nick said.  “I just think that it is a little unreasonable to check her if her sleeping patterns haven’t changed much at all.”

“I just want to make sure, okay,” Kevin said.  He really didn’t feel like arguing with Nick today or ever again.  Nick always seemed to win in every argument and if he didn’t, he would be mad at you for at least a month.  It was just his personality.

“I will be happy to check her,” Nick said as his mom called him and his brothers into the dining room for lunch.

“Emma, do you want toast for lunch,” Denise asked the little girl who shook her head no.  They would be having dinner later on, but they were just having a light lunch of sandwiches right now before the early Thanksgiving dinner.

“Cuddle with Mommy,” Emma said as she snuggled into her Mom again and stuck her thumb in her mouth.  Emma had been doing that a lot in the past couple of days.

“Oh sweetie,” Dani said as she put her hand on the little girls burning forehead.  “I just wish you felt better Emma,” she added as she looked down and found that Emma had fallen asleep once again.

“Here, I will take her,” Denise said as she picked up the sleeping four-year-old girl and took her into the living room, laid her down, and covered her up with a blanket.

“Poor thing, she is burning up,” Denise said when she came back into the kitchen to help get lunch ready for everyone.

“Yea, I know,” Dani said.  “I just wish she felt better and wasn’t sick.”

“I know, but this won’t be the first time that you have a puking kid on a holiday,” Denise said.  “I remember once Kevin got sick on Halloween and he was so upset that he couldn’t go trick-or-treating.”

“Poor Kevin,” Dani said.  “Did he get out for any trick-or-treating that year?”

“No, he was puking every five minutes, so Paul had to take Joe and Nick out while I stayed home and took care of poor Kevin.  I remember I was at the door once and he came around the corner and started puking his guts out,” Denise said as she pulled out the stuff to make quick sandwiches.

“Oh Kevin,” Dani said as her husband and two of her three brothers-in-laws came into the kitchen again.

“What did I miss?” Kevin said as he came into the kitchen and sat down by his wife.

“Denise was just telling me about the time that you were sick on Halloween,” Dani said.

“I remember that, I was so sick.  I had a really good costume and wanted to go trick-or-treating so badly,” Kevin said.

“I think I was sick on Christmas one year,” Dani said.  “I only had a really bad cold though, thankfully.  I gave my dad a pen that I had made him and sneezed all over it when I gave it to him, he had to go sanitize it, I felt so bad.”

“That would be a worst holiday to be sick on,” Kevin said as they heard coughing and gagging come from the living room.

“I got her,” Kevin said as he got up and rushed to the living room, just in time for her to throw up.  Kevin thankfully got the bucket under her mouth before anymore ended up on the floor, couch, or wherever else she had puked today.

“Oh honey,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back as she gagged and sputtered.  There wasn’t much left in her stomach, just some medicine and the red Gatorade that Dani had given her before she fell asleep.

“Come on let’s go get you cleaned up,” Kevin said.

“Daddy,” Emma said as she sniffled and snuggled into his shoulder.  Kevin easily swooped the little girl into his arms and carried her upstairs.

“Do you need any help?” Nick said as he followed Kevin upstairs.

“No, you have done enough already,” Kevin muttered as Emma started gagging again.

“Crap, I forgot,” Kevin was saying as little Emma vomited all over his shirt and herself.

“It’s okay Emma,” Kevin said as to try to calm her down.  Kevin didn’t have any time to get her calmed down though, because before he knew it, he was covered in green foamy vomit again.

“Here Kevin, let me help please,” Nick said as he tried to take Emma from him.

“Come here Emma,” Nick said once Kevin let go of his daughter.

“Nicky,” Emma cried as she hid her face into his shoulder.

“Shhh Emma,” Nick said as he swayed with her in his arms.

“Nicky, I poop,” Emma said as she raised her head from his shoulder.

“Okay, come on let’s get you to the potty,” Nick said as he sat her down on the floor and she ran ahead to the bathroom and waited for her uncle or dad to come pull down her pants and help her sit on the potty.

“Thanks for helping,” Kevin muttered as he followed his daughter into the bathroom.  He found her jumping up and down by the toilet, waiting for her Dad to put on the potty seat and help her get on the potty.

“Daddy hurry the poops are going to come out,” Emma said as she jumped up and down in front of the toilet, waiting for her father to put the potty seat on the potty.  Once the potty seat was on the toilet, he pulled down her pants and took off her pull up and sat her on the potty, where she started having diarrhea.

“Call me when you are done,” Kevin said as he left the bathroom to go change into new clothes.

“Okay Daddy,” Emma said as she kicked her little legs while she sat on the potty.

“Hey thanks for helping with her,” Kevin said to his brother when he went out to the bedroom to change into new clothes.

“You are welcome,” Nick said as he left the room to go get another shirt for himself.  Even though he never really got any puke on him, he felt better about changing.

“Daddy, I am done,” Emma yelled from the bathroom.

“Okay, just a minute honey,” Kevin yelled back.  “Daddy has to talk to Uncle Nicky for a second, okay.”

“You know she really looks up to you,” Kevin said as she ran into him in the hallway heading back downstairs.

“Yea,” Nick said.  “Just so you know, I don’t want to be here as much as you do, I would rather be in Rhode Island with Oliva and her family, instead of here, but I am here because of Mom.  I don’t want to play your little shenanigans, just so you know.”

“Can you please at least test Emma for me please, she is really sick, and I don’t know what is wrong with her,” Kevin said.

“Fine, I will test her, bring her downstairs after she is done and I will test her,” Nick said very grumpily.

“Thanks Nick, it means a lot to me that you will do this for me,” Kevin said as he turned to go back into the bedroom that Kevin, Dani, and Emma were sharing.

“Sorry Daddy, my tummy hurt and then I threw up,” Emma said as she was sitting on the potty when her Dad came around the corner.

“Oh Emma, it’s okay,” Kevin said as he rushed over to his little girl as she coughed, gagged, and puked again.

“Oh honey,” Kevin said as he grabbed the garbage can next to the toilet and held it in front of her mouth just in time for another episode of puke.

“Hey, do you need any help,” Joe said as he came into the bedroom to find Emma puking in a garbage can now and Kevin holding the garbage can for her.

“Uh no, I think we are fine, once she is done, maybe you can help,” Kevin said as he held the garbage can up for her.

“Oh honey,” Kevin said as Emma gagged, and green foamy vomit came up.  Emma had been puking green foamy vomit for about half an hour now.

“Come on let’s go downstairs,” Kevin said after he got Emma all cleaned up again.

“Daddy carry me please,” Emma said as she put her arms up.  Kevin easily picked up the four-year-old and carried her downstairs.

“Hey, Nick, do you want to test her before we have dinner,” Kevin asked his brother when he ran into him.

“Sure, just let me go get my bag and I will be right in if you want to go into the living room with her,” Nick said as he turned and went to the front hall to get his bag and testing supplies.

“Emma, Uncle Nicky is going to come and give you a little poke, but it won’t hurt, I promise,” Kevin said as he sat down on the couch with a sleepy Emma in his lap.

Emma just nodded as Nick came over and opened his bag.  He first changed out the needle and made sure he had a Band-Aid for her finger after he was done testing her.  Typically, Nick would just suck on his finger until it stopped bleeding, but he figured Emma wouldn’t want to do that.

“Okay Emma here comes the poke,” Nick said as he poked her finger and Emma started crying and tried to pull her hand away from Nick’s grasp.

“Just a minute Emma,” Kevin said as he attempted to hold her arm still and within reach of Nick who was still trying to get his meter to work to do the final step of testing her blood sugar.

Nick finally got his meter to cooperate with him and work, he pressed the meter to Emma’s finger within turn made her flinch and pull her hand away.

“I have it, I think,” Nick said as Kevin was trying to get her to hold her hand still for Nick.

“It is normal,” Nick said as Kevin let out a sigh of relief.  He was glad that his daughter didn’t have diabetes, but he was still concerned what was going on with her.

“Come on Emma,” Kevin said as he stood up with her in his arms.

“Emma, do you want a Band-Aid on that?” Nick asked the little girl who shook her head.  She was never going to let Nick have her hand again.  He made her hand have owies.

Finding Hope – Chapter 11

Thanksgiving dinner was awkward to say the least.  No one really knew what to talk about and none of the brothers really wanted to be there, including Frankie.  He didn’t like the tension that was going on in between his older brothers and wanted them to be like themselves again.

It was now Sunday and little Emma was not doing any better, her fever would come and go at odd times of the day.  This morning she was actually starting to act like her normal self again and was actually hungry, something she hasn’t been since Wednesday morning.  After Denise made her some toast this morning, she threw it all back up and her fever came back stronger than ever.

“Daddy, my tummies owies,” Emma said as she coughed a little bit before throwing up the rest of her breakfast along with some more of the green bile that she had been throwing up since Thursday, pretty much every hour and a half to two hours.

“Oh honey,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back while she puked into the bucket that was in her lap.  Once she was done, she laid her head back on the edge of the couch, where she was sitting.

“Can Daddy take the bucket?” Kevin asked his daughter who nodded as she closed her eyes and fell asleep for already the second time today.  Kevin carefully took the bucket out of her lap and took it to the nearest bathroom where he emptied it into the toilet and then cleaned it out with some bleach that his Mom had so nicely bought and put a bottle in each of the bathrooms.

“She puked again,” Kevin said as he came out of the bathroom and went into the kitchen, but not before delivering the bucket back to Emma in case she would wake up and puke.

“Poor thing, I hope she feels better soon,” Dani said.  She felt awful that she has been so sick for so long.  It was now going on close to a week since she started throwing up.

“I know, we should probably take her to the doctor if she doesn’t start feeling better on Tuesday when we are home,” Kevin said.

“Yea, for sure,” Dani said as she sighed.  She just wishes her little Emma Bug was feeling better.

“Daddy,” little Emma called out from her spot on the couch.  She had just woken up and had to go potty, but she didn’t want to walk, she wanted to be carried.

“Yea Emma,” Kevin said as he went into the living room to find Emma’s pale body lying on the couch.

“I have to go poops,” Emma said as she reached out for her Dad who immediately picked her up and took her to the nearest bathroom where he sat her on the floor.

“Okay Emma, hold up your shirt for Daddy,” Kevin said as he got her to hold up her pajama shirt that was way too long on her.

“Daddy, hurry poops are going to come out,” Emma said as she jumped up and down.

“Okay Emma,” Kevin said as he pulled off the pull up and sat her on the toilet as she started having diarrhea.

“Daddy, my poops come out fasts,” Emma said as she continued to have even more diarrhea.

“I know honey,” Kevin said as Emma let out a large fart before more diarrhea got dumped into the toilet.

“Daddy,” Emma started crying.  She was scared, she didn’t know what was happening to her body.

“It’s okay Emma,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back.

“I’m done Daddy,” Emma said a couple minutes later.  Kevin looked around and found no pull ups in the downstairs bathroom, they must have used them all up in here.  On Wednesday morning, Dani went out and picked up some more pullups for little Emma.

“Emma, do you think you can stay here while Daddy runs upstairs and gets some more pull-ups for you?” Kevin asked his daughter as she nodded her head.  She had been left alone on the potty before, with a potty seat on it, but never one without a potty seat on it.  She was on a potty without a potty seat on it right now.  The potty seat was on the potty upstairs, not downstairs.

Kevin quickly ran upstairs and grabbed a case of pullups, so that way they would have some in the downstairs bathroom.  The only reason Emma was wearing pullups and not underwear was because she was sick and she had some major diarrhea accidents, which is not fun to clean up anyways, let alone out of underwear.

“Emma Daddy is here,” Kevin said when he got into the bathroom to find that his daughter had thrown up again, this time all over herself, the floor, and the wall opposite the toilet.

“Oh honey,” Kevin said when he walked into the puked covered bathroom.

“Daddy, sorry, my tummy was hurting and then I threw up, please don’t get mad at me,” Emma said from her spot on the toilet.

“It’s okay honey, let’s get you cleaned up,” Kevin said as he set the pullup on the counter for use later.

“Daddy,” Emma said as she gagged and threw up again.

“Oh honey,” Kevin said as he grabbed the bucket and rubbed her back while little Emma held onto the bucket for dear life.

“Shhh,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back as she gagged and sputtered.

“Come on let’s get you cleaned up honey,” Kevin said after Emma was done throwing up.

“Daddy,” Emma cried as she reached out and hugged her father.  Kevin picked Emma’s crying body up and carried her upstairs to give her another bath just this morning.

“Can you stand for Daddy,” Kevin said as he sat her in the middle of the bathroom floor while he went and turned on the bathtub.

“Daddy,” Emma called out for Kevin who turned around in a split second to find that Emma had turned pale green again and didn’t look the best.  Kevin quickly scooped Emma up in his arms and set her in front of the toilet just in time for her to vomit.

“Oh honey,” Kevin said as he rubbed the little girls back.  It was during this vomiting episode that Kevin could tell that the bathtub was getting full.  He quickly left her, turned around, and turned off the water, and then came back to find that she had stopped vomiting for the moment.

“Daddy, I am cold,” little Emma said as the four-year-old shivered.

“I know, Daddy is going to get you in a nice warm bath and then we will get you warmed up, okay,” Kevin said as Emma nodded her head a little bit and ran into Kevin’s arms.

“Come on let’s get you in the bath,” Kevin said as he gently picked her up and set her in the tub.  Kevin first washed her hair with shampoo and then he rinsed her hair with a plastic cup.  He put some conditioner in her hair to make it shiny.  He then took the luffa scrubby that Denise had gotten Emma before they got here.  It had a duck attached to it.  He gently scrubbed her body up with it.  He then helped her stand up, so he could rinse her off.  Once she was rinsed off, he picked her up with a towel wrapped around her body.

“Daddy, sleepy,” little Emma said as she tried to cuddle into him while he was getting her dried off.

“I know, let’s finish getting dressed and then we will go take a nap, okay,” Kevin said to his daughter who started crying.

“Oh honey, we will get you dressed quickly and then we can take a nap, here let’s put your pull-up on,” Kevin said as he helped his daughter step into the pull-up.  He then helped her step in her pants.  He then helped her get on her pajama top.  He immediately picked her up.  Little Emma cuddled into him, stuck her thumb in her mouth, and fell asleep almost immediately.

Kevin walked out of the bathroom, through the bedroom and downstairs where he laid her down on the couch that already had a sheet on it.  His mom always put sheets over the couches whenever someone was sick, just to make clean up easier and to help germs stay off of the couch.  He made sure a bucket was in reach in case she woke up and needed to use it, before giving her a kiss on the forehead and walking out of the room to find his wife and younger brother Joe.

“When does your plane leave?” Kevin asked Joe.  He knew that is brother left today.  Kevin, Dani, and Emma were leaving late tomorrow afternoon.

“I leave at 6:30 tonight, so I will probably leave here around 2:30 or 3:00 at the very latest,” Joe said.  It being a good 45-minute drive or so with traffic to get to the Dallas airport.

          “Okay,” Kevin said.

          “How’s Emma doing?” Dani asked.

“She had major diarrhea, and then I had to leave her to go grab a pull-up and wipes from the upstairs bathroom.  When I came back, she had thrown up all over, I mean it was all over, it was in her hair, going down the front of her, all over the wall by the toilet, all over the wall across from the toilet, and all over the floor.  I have never seen that much throw-up, let alone out of a little four-year-old.  So, I took her upstairs and got her in the bathtub.  When I was filling up the tub, she threw up again, this time though, we got it in the toilet,” Kevin said out of breath.

“Where is she now?” Joe asked.  He was worried about his niece; she has been very sick since she had arrived on Tuesday.

“She is napping on the couch,” Kevin said, but then added, “I know I don’t want what she has.”

“I just hope she feels better soon,” Joe said.

“Thank you for being such a good Daddy to Emma this past week.  Being pregnant and all makes it harder to get to Emma quickly this past week, and you have taken all of the worry out of that for me, so thank you,” Dani said.

“Daddy,” Emma cried out for her father.  Both Kevin and Dani got up and went into the living room to find Emma crying.

“Emma, what’s wrong?” Kevin asked as he sat down next to his daughter.

“My back hurts,” Emma cried as she leaned into him.

“Oh honey,” Dani said as she started rubbing her back.  This past week, back rubs from Mommy made her back feel somewhat better.

By now, Joe had wandered into the living room where his brother, sister-in-law, and niece were sitting on the couch.  Poor little Emma was crying into Kevin’s chest, while Dani was rubbing her little back.

“Emma, do you want some medicine for your back?” Kevin whispered into her hair.  Emma just nodded her head into her father’s chest.

“Joe, can you go grab us the Tylenol, it’s in the bag on the couch upstairs in our room,” Kevin asked his brother who nodded his head and left to go get the medicine that Kevin had requested he get.

“Emma, look who I found upstairs,” Joe said when he came downstairs a couple minutes later.  He was holding the teddy bear that Emma loved so much.  The poor bear had been through the wash at least three times this past week and his eye was starting to come off.

“Teddy,” Emma said as she started coughing again, big deep coughs.  Not like what a little four-year-old should be coughing like.  Her coughs sounded like a grown man’s coughs.

“Oh Emma,” Dani said as she continued to rub her little back.  She had the bucket within arm’s reach though just in case Emma was to throw up again.

“Mommy, my back hurts,” Emma screamed out as she started hyperventilating.  She was just in so much pain that she didn’t know what to do.

“Emma, take some deep breaths,” Joe said as he got down on his knees in front of her and put her hand on his chest.  The last thing they needed was to have Emma pass out.  “Take breaths as my heart is beating Em,” Joe said as Emma started taking deep breaths along with Joe’s heart.  In a couple of minutes Emma was breathing regular again, no more hyperventilating.

“Hey thanks,” Kevin said.  He had never seen her get that worked up before, maybe something was more wrong than just the flu.

“You’re welcome, I am glad I could help,” Joe said.  He was really glad that he could help her feel at least a little better in that moment.

A couple minutes later Emma was sound asleep again.  The really scary episode of Emma hyperventilating was over, and all was at peace again with Emma sleeping.  Sure, Kevin and Dani were still worried about her, probably more now that she just had the hyperventilating episode, but she was at least sleeping for now.

“Joe, how did you know how to do that, and you were so calm,” Kevin said as both him and Dani left the room with Joe.

“One of my friends was taking a class on how to help someone calm down after hyperventilating, because his girlfriend hyperventilated a lot or something like that, and he wanted someone to come along with him, so I went with him and they taught us how to do this,” Joe said.

“Gosh a class for just hyperventilating, I guess LA does have everything,” Dani said.

“Daddy,” they heard coming from the other room right then followed by gagging and coughing.

“I’m coming Emma,” Kevin said as he rushed out of the room and into the living room.

“Yea, it was really something, they had dolls that hyperventilated, it was actually kind of creepy and to get the certification you had to like stop them from hyperventilating,” Joe said shivering.  He was still creeped out by the dolls and the class was months ago.

“That does sound creepy,” Dani laughed.

“It was extremely creepy, I think I had nightmares for weeks,” Joe said.

“I had no clue that they had a class like that, why would someone take a class for that, did it teach you anything else?” Dani wondered.

“Nope, it was like Handling Hyperventilating 101, I guess there was more classes if you want to take them, but I opted out of signing up for more, I think James signed up for a whole semester long class though,” Joe said.

          “That is crazy,” Dani laughed.

“Yea, I agree, like if you are going to school for that, then maybe, but this was at a clinic of some sort, we all sat in this room and learned about it,” Joe said.

“That does sound a little odd,” Dani said as Joe nodded his head.

“It was, trust me,” Joe said.

“I wish Emma felt better this weekend, I know that your Mom wanted to go take Emma to the zoo, she is just so sick,” Dani sighed.

“I know, but she will be better in no time and back to her normal self,” Joe said.

“Let’s hope so,” Dani said.  “I just hope that Kevin and I don’t get it.”

“Kids get sick all the time, she is going to get better,” Joe said.

“Thanks,” Dani said as she hugged Joe.  When Dani went to hug Joe, the baby kicked.

“Was that what I think it was,” Joe asked in shock.  Sure, when he was younger, and his Mom had Nick and Frankie, he felt them kick inside of her, but not since then.

“Are you excited to meet your Uncle Joe,” Dani said as she looked down and talked to her belly.  Joe started getting teared up, once again.

“Gosh, this weekend has just been so emotional, sorry,” Joe said as he wiped his eyes.

“Don’t worry about it.  I know how hard this has been on Kevin too, he has kept it together pretty well for Emma.  He has cried for hours at night, just sobbing into my arms.  He doesn’t know what to do with his life anymore, now that the band is done,” Dani said.

“I just can’t believe that you are going to have a baby in a couple of months, then you will have two kids,” Joe said as he wiped his eyes.

Kevin walked into the living room to find Frankie sitting there rubbing Emma’s back while she vomited in the bucket.  Kevin rushed over to where Emma and Frankie were sitting.

“I was walking by when I heard her coughing, so I ran in here and got her the bucket just in time, I handed her the bucket and she literally started throwing up before she could grab a hold of it,” Frankie said as he continued to rub Emma’s back.

“Thanks, Frankie, for helping,” Kevin said.

“It’s nothing that all of us haven’t done before, we have all been sick,” Frankie said as Emma coughed and gagged some more, but she had nothing more in her stomach, so she dry-heaved for a while before she was done.  When she was done, she leaned back against her uncle and closed her eyes briefly before opening them up again.

“Daddy,” Emma said in a panic.  She had to go to the bathroom really bad and was afraid that she wouldn’t make it.

“What Emma?” Kevin said as he looked at her panicked face.

“I go poops,” Emma said as she stated crying, because she knew she wouldn’t be able to hold it much longer.  It wasn’t but a second later that she farted and started having diarrhea in her pull up.

“Come on Emma Bear, let’s get you to the potty,” Kevin said as he swooped her up in his arms and took her to the downstairs bathroom where he sat her on the floor in front of the toilet.

“Daddy, I poop in my pull-ups,” Emma said as Kevin helped her get her pants down.

“I can smell that.  Do you have to go potty anymore?” Kevin asked Emma as she shook her head a little bit and started crying.

“My tummy’s hurt,” Emma cried out as she started coughing and gagging.  Kevin spun her around and got her head aimed in the toilet, just in time for her to throw up more.

“Oh, Emma Bear, it’s okay,” Kevin said as he rubbed her little back as she sputtered and coughed.

After Emma was done throwing up, Kevin sat her on the potty.  “Emma, we are going to sit her for a minute, while I get another pull-up on you, okay,” Kevin said her ripped her pull-up off, picked her up, and sat her on the toilet.

Finding Hope – Chapter 12

Joe had left for home earlier on that Sunday.  Paul, Denise, Kevin, Dani Frankie, and Emma were all sitting outside around the fire pit.  Emma was squished in between Frankie and Paul sleeping soundly, using Frankie’s chest as a pillow while the family talked about stuff.

“I think we are going to take Emma to the doctor when we get home, on Wednesday.  She doesn’t seem to be getting better, in fact she seems to be getting worse,” Kevin said.

“Good idea,” Paul said, “just to make sure that nothing is wrong with her, I am sure that nothing is wrong with her, and it is just a bug of some sort.”

“Yea, maybe if she has stopped throwing up and is feeling better, maybe we won’t take her in,” Dani said.

“Yea, but I would still call the doctor to let them know that she had been sick for 6 days, just so they know,” Denise said.

“Was she sick before the plane ride on Tuesday?” Paul asked.

“She had diarrhea that morning, but that was all, and she was complaining about her stomach hurting,” Kevin said.

“Wait, when did she have the diarrhea?” Dani asked.  She didn’t have any when I took her to the bathroom before the plane or on the plane,” Dani said.

“She had some when she woke up, and she was complaining about her tummy hurting.  I asked her if she was going to throw up, and she said no, I just wasn’t prepared for a whole week of puke.  I was hoping that it was just air sickness,” Kevin said.

“Yea, me too, she was feeling better once we got off the plane for a while there,” Dani said.

“Yes, she even told me she was feeling better, and now we are back to this,” Kevin said.

“There is no point in arguing over it now, I would suggest that when you get home on Tuesday, just call the doctor,” Denise said.

“Good idea, thanks Mom,” Kevin said.  He was really hoping that by the time Tuesday came, Emma would be back to her normal bouncy-shy self.

“Okay, I think it is time to get both of them to bed,” Kevin said a couple minutes later as he looked over at Frankie and Emma who were both sound asleep.

“Let me take a picture first, Paul move the bucket, and get out of the picture,” Denise said as she snapped a picture on her phone of Frankie and Emma sound asleep.  Emma was laying her head on Frankie’s chest, and Frankie was laying very awkwardly on the outdoor sofa.  Denise posted the picture to her Instagram, with the caption.

“Long Thanksgiving Weekend has these two exhausted”

“Okay, you can move Emma now,” Denise said as Kevin came over and carefully picked up his four-year-old daughter and took her inside.

“Dani, can you grab a bucket, I don’t think we have one upstairs,” Kevin said quietly to Dani who nodded and went into the laundry room and grabbed a bucket.  Denise had shown them where the buckets were kept and told them they could get them anytime they needed one.

Kevin got Emma upstairs and laid her down on the bed and got her changed into a clean pair of pajamas very carefully and quietly.  He also slipped on a clean pullup.

“Why is she in there and not on the couch?” Dani said, meaning the bed that Kevin and Dani had been sharing these past couple of nights.  Emma had slept on the pull-out couch in their room for the past couple of nights.

“Well, I figured it was easier, and the fact that she always seems to end up in here, why not start her out in here,” Kevin said as he covered her up.

“Okay,” Dani sighed as she went into the bathroom to get herself ready for the night.  Her and Kevin were going to head back downstairs, Dani just wanted to get on her pajamas before going downstairs again.

“Dani, what do you want me to do?” Kevin asked as he followed his wife into the bathroom.

“Do you want her to puke all over the bed also?” Dani whispered yelled since Emma was sleeping in the room next to them.

“No, but she won’t,” Kevin said as he shut the bathroom door, so little Emma wouldn’t wake up.

“How do you know that?” Dani said.  “She has been puking every hour and a half to two hours for the past week.”

“I know, but she won’t because we will have a bucket right next to her, in case she throws up,” Kevin said.

“Okay,” Dani sighed, “but I am not cleaning up the bed when she decides to puke all over it.”

“Mommy,” Emma called out as she started crying.  She didn’t feel good and just wanted her Mommy to give her a back rub and make her feel better.

“Mommy’s coming honey,” Dani said as she left the bathroom to go into the bedroom to find Emma sitting up in the bed crying.

“Mommy,” Emma cried as soon as she saw her.

“Oh honey, what’s wrong?” Dani said as she sat down on the edge of the bed.  Emma came hurdling into her sobbing.

“My back,” Emma sobbed as she leaned against her mom’s chest and sobbed.

“Oh, Emma Bug,” Dani said as she rubbed the little girls back.  She looked at Kevin with a worried expression who had now emerged from the bathroom, in his pajamas.

“Oh Emma, what’s wrong?” Kevin said as he sat down by his wife and daughter on the bed.  He made sure to grab the bucket just in case it was needed.

“Daddy, my back hurts,” Emma cried into Dani’s chest, right before she started coughing.

“Emma, here,” Kevin said as he handed the bucket to Dani, who just barely got it under her mouth, before she started vomiting.

“Oh Em, shhh,” Dani said as she rubbed the little girls back as she retched and gagged multiple times before she was done throwing up.

“Hey, can I help with anything,” Denise said as she knocked on the door frame of the bedroom that her son, daughter-in-law and

granddaughter was in.

“Uh sure if you want to help,” Kevin said as he looked at Dani who looked cold.  She just nodded.

“Hey is the fire still going?” Kevin asked.  Dani had been shivering ever since she came upstairs to change into her pajamas.

“Yea, your Dad is still down there, he said that he would be in shortly though, I just came up here to see if I could help with anything,” Denise said.

“Dani, go down by the fire, and I’ll be down there in a couple of minutes,” Kevin said as Dani nodded before giving Emma a kiss good night and then leaving the room.

“Hey, why don’t you go down there also, I will get her to bed,” Denise said.  She absolutely loved taking care of Emma and cuddling with her.

“You are sure,” Kevin asked his mom as Denise nodded.

“Yea, I think I can get her to bed,” Denise said.

“Okay, Glammy is going to finish getting you ready for bed,” Kevin said.

“Okay Daddy,” Emma said as she stuck her thumb in her mouth and started sucking on it.

“Good night Emma be good for Glammy okay,” Kevin said as he gave his four-year-old daughter a kiss on the forehead before heading downstairs to be with his wife and father.

“Okay Emma, do we have to go potty before bed,” Denise asked the four-year-old girl who nodded her head, and hopped off the bed and ran into the bathroom.

“Okay Emma,” Denise said as she helped her onto the potty seat.  “Call Glammy when you are done okay, I will be right out here,” Denise added as Emma nodded her head.

“Glammy,” Emma called out about ten seconds later.

“Yea honey, are you done?” Denise asked as she went into the bathroom to see Emma throwing up all over the bathroom.

“Oh Emma,” Denise said as she ran over to where Emma was sitting on the toilet throwing up all over the place.  Denise grabbed the bucket that was on the counter and thrust it under her little mouth, so no more would get on the floor.  Emma was now starting to get really upset.

“Shhh, it’s okay, Emma, just get it all up,” Denise said as she rubbed the little girls back as she held the bucket under the little girl’s mouth.

After Emma was done throwing up, she just sat there and cried.  Her little tummy had been hurting so much in the past couple of days, and she didn’t know why it was hurting.  Her head and back hurt too, she was just miserable, and didn’t know what we’re going on with her little body.

“Shhh,” Denise soothed as she thought about what to do next.  She decided that the poor girl most likely needed a bath.

“Brrr,” Emma shivered as she sat there on the toilet.

“Emma, we are going to get you in the bathtub, okay,” Denise said as Emma continued to cry.

“Cold,” Emma shivered as she sat there covered in her own vomit.

“I know you are cold, Glammy is going to get the water warm okay, before you get in, okay,” Denise said as Emma nodded her little head.

Meanwhile downstairs, Paul and Danielle were in front of the inside fireplace.  Shortly after Dani had come downstairs, Paul and she had moved inside, it was getting a little chilly outside and the temperatures had dipped into the lower 50’s in the past half an hour or so.

“Gosh, you are down here quick, is she sleeping?” Dani asked her husband as she reached for a blanket and cuddled up underneath of it.

“No, Mom said that she would put her to bed for us and give us a break,” Kevin said as he came and sat down by his wife

“Well, that was nice of her,” Dani said as she cuddled into her husband’s side.

“Yea, one less thing for me to do, I just hope she feels better soon,” Kevin sighed.

“I hope she is better too; I was hoping it was only a little bug and she would be back too normal by Thanksgiving, I know your Mom wanted to take her to the zoo this weekend,” Paul said.  “With her being so sick and everything that unfortunately didn’t happen.”

“I am sorry that she was so sick this weekend, I hope you guys don’t get whatever she has,” Dani said.

“Maybe that is the reason why Mom wanted to put her to bed,” Kevin sighed.

“So how is the house coming?” Paul asked his son and daughter-in-law.  Kevin and Dani were moving to a new house in Boonton, a couple miles away from Denville in the early part of next year, hopefully in January, before Dani was due.

“It’s going good, it’s getting there, I hope it’s done by early January, and that we are living in the house in mid to late January at the very latest,” Kevin said.

“Wow, that isn’t too much longer until January,” Paul said.

“If she decides to make her appearance early, we will have stuff set up at our house, so we will be set,” Kevin said.

“Do you have a name picked out yet?” Paul asked.

“No, we are still tossing names around, so no we don’t have a name picked out,” Dani said.

“No, I have one picked out, Dani is the one that doesn’t, she doesn’t like the name that I have picked out,” Kevin laughed.

“Well, I don’t want to name her after a city,” Dani said.

“Whatever,” Kevin said as he rolled his eyes.

“You guys will come to a decision, all parents do, I remember we had challenges naming all of you boys,” Paul said.

“Even me,” Kevin said.

“Yes, even you, Mom didn’t want you to be named after me at first, but then she finally caved and let me name you after me,” Paul said.

“What did she want to name me?” Kevin asked his father.

“I think Henry or George, or some really odd, strange name like that, but I put an end to those names very quickly,” Paul said.

“Dani what do you think about having a husband named Henry or George?” Kevin asked his wife.

“I don’t think I would like that,” Dani laughed.

“Do you have any offers on the house?” Paul asked the couple.

“No, not yet I mean we just put it up in the middle of October, so I wouldn’t think we would get any for a while,” Kevin said.

“You will get an offer eventually, I can’t believe that you guys are building your first house together,” Paul said.

“Yea, me neither,” Kevin said.

“We have to decide on all of the paint for the house next week, and with a sick kid, this isn’t going to be easy,” Kevin groaned.  “All of this house stuff is like overwhelming.”

“Every time we moved, your Mom would get like this, especially when you boys were younger, because there was always so much to do, but you will get there eventually,” Paul said.

“Thanks,” Kevin said as Dani nodded.

Upstairs, Denise was just getting Emma out of the bathtub.  “Okay Emma, what do you say we go get some more pajamas on,” Denise said as Emma nodded and ran out of the bathroom and over to her suitcase that had some clean pajamas in there.

“I want to wear these Glammy,” Emma said as she turned around with a pair of Princess Pajamas in her hands.

“Come on, let’s get you in a new pull-up and some clean pajamas and then off to bed,” Denise said as she helped Emma get dressed in her pajamas.

“Good night Glammy,” Emma said as she laid on her bed all covered up.  She was already half asleep.

“Good night Emma,” Denise said as she gave her a kiss on the forehead.

“She is sound asleep,” Denise said as she came into the living room a couple minutes later, where her husband, son, and daughter-in-law were all talking.

“Did she go down easy for you,” Dani asked her mother-in-law.

“Yea, she did get sick again, while she was going to the bathroom, but after that and another bath, she was sound asleep,” Denise said.

“Why didn’t you come down and get one of us, we could have gotten her in the bath and in bed, so you didn’t have too,” Kevin said.

“I wanted to give you both a break, and you guys needed it,” Denise said.

“Well thank you very much,” Dani said.

“Oh, yea I cleaned your bathroom for you too,” Denise said as she sat down next to her husband.

“Thank you, Mom,” Kevin said.  “So, she is sleeping again?”

“Yea, she was pretty tired after getting sick and a bath,” Denise said.

“She should sleep for a couple of hours at least then,” Dani said.

“Yea, so how is the baby planning coming?  We haven’t really had that much time to talk about this,” Denise asked Kevin and Dani.

“We haven’t even moved yet, but I have a theme in mind, and I am using my wedding dress to make a basinet for her,” Dani said.

“It is going to be tan and not really feminine, so that way it can be used if we have a little boy in the future,” Dani said.

“I am sure that the basinet will be beautiful,” Denise said.  “Do you have any names picked out yet for her?”

“We were just talking about this, but no we don’t have any names picked out yet, we are still tossing names around,” Dani said.

“Yea Mom, I heard that you wanted to name me Henry or George,” Kevin smirked.

“Well, that was an idea of mine, but then your father finally convinced me to name you after him, I wasn’t too keen on the whole situation at first, but then I thought why not,” Denise laughed.

End Notes:

Henry is my fishy's name now.  It wasn't when I wrote this. I didn't even realize this until I was reading it while I posted it.  Hehe!

Finding Hope – Chapter 13

Very early the next morning, the Jonas family separated again, this time it was for Kevin, Danielle, and Emma to go back home to New Jersey, while the Jonas parents and Frankie stayed in Texas for another week or so, before heading back to LA.

This time though, Kevin and Danielle were prepared to go on the plane, they brought buckets, bags, and towels with them.  They didn’t know that poor Emma was going to be so sick last time on the plane, and well this entire vacation, but this time they came prepared.

“Emma let’s go potty before we get on the plane, okay honey,” Dani said as she got down on her level.  Emma nodded her head as leaned her head into Dani.  “Mommy has to stand up first, before we can move.”

“Mommy, I’m sleepy,” Emma wined as she stuck her thumb in her mouth, once they were in the bathroom.

“Emma, can you go potty for me, and then we will get on the plane,” Dani said as she held the little girl on the potty.  Emma just nodded her head as she started having diarrhea yet again.

“I’m done Mommy,” Emma said a couple minutes later.

“Okay honey,” Dani said as she helped the little girl stand up, so she could wipe her bottom for her.  Once she wiped the little girls bottom, she helped her slip into a clean pull-up.

“Mommy, I sleepy,” Emma complained again.

“I know Emma Bug, Mommy has to go potty and then we will get going, okay,” Dani said as Emma nodded her head and stuck her thumb in her mouth again.

They were on the plane a couple minutes later, and little Emma was sound asleep as soon as they sat down.  “She’s sleeping,” Kevin said as he put stuff in the overhead bins.  He could see that her little eye lids were closed and that she was sleeping.

“Well at least we won’t have to worry about her puking or crying at the moment, she is so tired,” Dani said.  “She could barely stay awake when we were in the bathroom.”

“Poor thing,” Kevin said.  “I hope that this is only the flu and not something more serious.”

“Yea, me too,” Dani said.  “I think we should call and see if we can get her in either later on today or early tomorrow morning during our layover in Chicago.”

“We probably should, I mean we should be home by like 12:30 or 1:00, so we should be able to get her in for a late afternoon appointment if they have availability that is,” Kevin said as he looked down at little Emma who was curled into him sound asleep.

“How long do we have in Chicago?” Dani asked.  On the way to Texas, they had no stops, but on the way home they had one stop in Chicago.

“I think like an hour or something close to an hour,” Kevin said as he pulled out his phone and looked up the plane information on his phone.  “Oh good, right now it looks like we are getting into Gate B2, and we leave from Gate B1, so that is like right next to each other, we should have time to call in Chicago,” Kevin said.

“Gosh I don’t think that has ever happened before,” Dani laughed as she got Emma’s hair out of her face.  She looked through her bag, and found one of Emma’s hair clips, and put it in her hair.

They made it to Chicago about two hours later, little Emma slept the entire plane ride.  “Kev, can you get Emma please,” Dani said as she stood up and went to the overhead bin, where she grabbed out her and the family’s stuff.

“Yea,” Kevin said as he gently picked up the little sleeping girl, after he had put on his backpack.  He then grabbed her bucket, before checking the seats to make sure they had everything.  The small family of three then left the plane a couple minutes later.

“Daddy,” Emma said as she woke up, and looked around, “where are we?”

“We are in Chicago honey,” Kevin said as Emma woke up some more, and yawned.

“Daddy, are we home yet?” Emma asked her father.

“No, we have one more plane to go,” Kevin said as he looked at the departure board and found their flight and he was correct, the gate was B1.

“Emma, can you stand for Daddy,” Kevin said once they had found three chairs to sit at, one for each of them.

“Daddy, how much longer?” Emma asked as Kevin put her on the floor.

“Another plane ride, and then we are home,” Kevin said as Emma nodded her head a little again.

“Daddy, I don’t feel good,” Emma said as she coughed a little bit.  Kevin grabbed the bucket from the chair that it was sitting on and thrust it under her mouth, just in time for her to vomit once again.

“It’s okay honey, just get it all out,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back as she cried.  It was hard for Emma to understand why she was so sick and felt so miserable, as it was for any little kid.

“Are you done Em,” Kevin said the little girl who just nodded her head and then climbed up in the empty chair and fell asleep once again.

“Hey, did you get an appointment?” Kevin asked Dani.  She had gone to somewhere quieter and more private to talk, since the place where they were sitting was noisy.

“Yea, it’s at 3:30 today, they seemed very concerned about her throwing up so much, and not being able to keep food down for a week now.  Let’s hope that they know what is wrong with her,” Dani sighed.

“I am sure it is just the flu or some sort-of bug that is just in her body for longer than normal,” Kevin said.

“Let’s hope so,” Dani said.

“Well, she woke up for about two minutes, puked, and then fell back asleep,” Kevin said as he brushed the little girl’s hair out of her face.  The clip that Dani had put in her hair on the other plane ride, had since fell out.

“Well at least she is sleeping, let’s hope this next flight is like the other one and she stays sleeping,” Dani sighed.

“Yea, I hope she sleeps through it like she did the last one,” Kevin said.  As they were getting ready to board the plane Emma woke up.

“Daddy, where are we going?” Emma said as she looked up at her father who was carrying her.

“We are getting on a plane to go home,” Dani said, she was behind Kevin and Emma.

“Okay Mommy,” Emma sighed as she laid her head down on her father’s shoulder again.

“Emma, where do you want to sit this time?” Kevin asked the little girl when they were in their row of seats.  They had reserved the window seat for Emma, but since she freaked out on the first plane ride about the window seat, they would give her the choice.

“By Mommy,” Emma said.  There were two seats where they were standing.  “But where is Daddy going to sit then?”

“Daddy is going to sit right over here,” Kevin said as he went and sat down in his seat.

“Okay Emma, where do you want to sit though, do you want to sit by the window or no?” Dani said, they had to sit down soon, because the other passengers had to board soon.

“I want to sit here,” Emma said as she sat down in the aisle seat.

“Okay,” Dani said as she sat down in the window seat.  Emma immediately cuddled into her mother’s side and stuck her thumb in her mouth.

“Oh honey,” Dani said as she felt the little girls burning forehead, when she brushed the hair out of her daughter’s face.

“Mommy, my tummy is hurting,” Emma said as she sat straight up and coughed a little bit.  Dani quickly brought out the bucket that she had put under the seat and thrust it under her little chin for her to throw up.

“Oh Emma,” Dani rubbed the little girls back as she coughed and sputtered some more.

“Mommy, I don’t like feeling icky,” Emma cried as she leaned into Dani’s side.

“Mommy has to go take care of this, okay, Daddy is going to sit with you okay,” Dani said as Emma nodded her head, as tears were streaming down her face.

“Oh Em,” Dani sighed as she leaned down and gave the four-year-old a kiss on the forehead and then went to the little, tiny airplane bathroom and dumped the vomit down the toilet.

“Daddy,” Emma cried while Dani was in the bathroom.

“Shhh, Emma,” Kevin said as he rubbed the little girls back and let her lean into his side.  He felt her forehead, she had a fever again.

“Daddy, I want to feel betters,” Emma cried into him.

“I know you do honey,” Kevin said, as he smoothed out the hair from her face.

Unfortunately, the whole second airplane ride was exactly like the one last week, Emma threw up the entire way, and when she wasn’t throwing up, she was sobbing into either Dani or Kevin, whoever wasn’t emptying out a bucket.  Thankfully, the flight attendants were very nice and kept asking them if they needed anything, they brought them bags, and towels.

The small family of three only had about half an hour left on the plane.  Poor Emma had thrown up or cried for the entire two-hour flight so far.  “I have to poops,” Emma cried.

“Okay honey come on let’s go potty,” Dani said as Emma stood up and then started crying.

“What’s wrong honey?” Kevin said from across the aisle as he looked at his daughter who was crying.

“My tummy hurts,” Emma cried as she ran into her father’s arms.

“Oh Emma,” Kevin said as he kissed her little warm forehead, and then sat her on his lap.  Emma immediately stuck her thumb in her mouth and sighed.

“Sir, you can’t be sitting with a child on your lap in this seat, I am sorry to say, but she will have to move,” a stewardess came by the row and looked at Kevin and Emma.

“Daddy, I gots to poops,” Emma cried out.  She wasn’t able to hold it much longer.

“Come on Emma, let’s go potty, you have to stand up for Daddy first though,” Kevin said as he put Emma on the ground in front of him.

“Mommy,” Emma cried out as she looked around for her.

“I’m right here Emma,” Dani said.

“Mommy, I poop again,” Emma said as she started having diarrhea in her pull-up again.  Emma just stood there in the isle and cried.

“Come on Emma let’s get to the potty,” Dani said as she led her into the very small airplane laboratory.  Dani pulled down the little girl’s pants and very dirty pull-up, and then helped her sit on the potty while she had even more diarrhea.

“Mommy, I want to feel better,” Emma cried as she tried to hug her mother.

“I know you do honey, you will get better, I promise, as soon as this plane lands, we are going to go to the doctor, they could get us in later this afternoon,” Dani said as she wiped away the little girl’s tears.

“Can you stay here for a second, Mommy has to go get you a new pull-up and some more pants, okay?” Dani asked the little girl as she nodded her head.  Dani came back in a few short minutes and got the little girl all cleaned up with wet wipes and helped her put on new pants.

“Mommy, are we going to be there soon?” Emma asked as she sniffled again.

“Yea, we have to get out of here and back to our seats, so we can land,” Dani said as Emma stood up and pulled up her pull-up and pants on her own.

“Good job honey now let’s wash hands and then we will go sit in our seats again,” Dani said.

“Okay Mommy,” Emma said as Dani opened the door, and they both left the laboratory.  Dani and Emma went and sat down in their seats, just as it came across the loudspeaker that they were going to be landing soon and that everyone had to have their seatbelts on.

Once they were landed, they rushed to get their luggage and get to the awaiting car for them.  The driver dropped them off at their house about an hour later, before heading to his next pick up, wherever that might be.

“Hi, we are here to see Dr. Hyman, for Emma Jonas,” Dani said at the check-in desk, as she was holding little Emma on her hip.

“Yea, if you want to go upstairs and then tell them you are here and check in with them, they will let her know that you are here,” the lady behind the desk said, as she typed something into her computer.

They small family of three took the elevator upstairs, after they checked in upstairs, they sat down in a couple of chairs.  “She is almost sleeping,” Dani said as she looked down at the little girl who was half asleep in her arms.

“Poor thing, she still has a fever,” Kevin said, as he reached over and felt Emma’s very hot head.

“Well at least we are here, when she is still sick,” Dani said.

“Yea,” Kevin said.

“Emma,” a nurse said as she came out from the backroom.  Dani stood up with little girl in her arms and followed the nurse back to the room.  Since Emma was sleeping, the nurse skipped the weighing part.

“So, what seems to be the problem today,” the nurse asked once they were in the room.

“Emma has not been able to keep anything down, and has had diarrhea, a really high fever, she has been really sleepy, as you can tell, and she has been complaining about her back hurting,” Dani said as she gave the nurse an update on this past week.

“When did this all start?” the nurse asked.

“We went to visit my family in Texas last Tuesday, and before we left that morning, she had diarrhea, which I didn’t think too much about, because she has had looser stools before.  Then we got on the plane and she started throwing up, again didn’t think too much about it, thought it was just air sickness.  She was feeling better after the plane ride and was starting to act like her normal self again.  When we got to my parents’ house though, she threw up again, and then the diarrhea started up again,” Kevin said.  “It wasn’t until the next day that she developed the fever.  I don’t really remember when her back started hurting, but I think it was that day, do you remember Dan?”

“No, I think it was Thanksgiving Day that it started hurting, at least that is the first time I remember hearing about it,” Dani said.  “She has also been coughing a lot too, and not like a little 4-year-old coughs, like a grown man’s really deep coughs too.”

“And when did the coughing start?” the nurse asked.

“On Tuesday, too,” Dani said.

“Okay, if you could put this on her, the doctor should be in shortly,” the nurse said as she left the room.

“Emma, you need to wake up,” Dani said as she gently woke her daughter up.

“Mommy, I want to sleep,” Emma said as she tried to cuddle in with Dani again.

“No, it’s time to wake up, I know you don’t feel well do you honey, you can go back to sleep in a while okay,” Dani said, as Emma reluctantly woke up and yawned.

“Hi,” Dr. Hyman said as she came in the room a couple minutes later.  Emma was already in the gown, and on the table.

“So, Emma seems to be sick, correct,” Dr. Hyman said as she came over and took a look at Emma.

“Yea, she hasn’t been feeling well for the past week or so, just a really upset stomach, along with a fever, and the runs,” Kevin said.

“A week is an awful long time to be sick, isn’t its Emma,” Dr. Hyman said as Emma nodded tiredly at her.

“Yea, she just hasn’t been herself, or feeling well at all this past week,” Dani said.

“Any other symptoms that she has had?” Dr. Hyman asked.

“No, just these symptoms and a really weird cough, and her back is really hurting,” Kevin said.

“Well let me take a look, but I am thinking from her symptoms that it is really only the stomach flu,” Dr. Hyman said, as she came over and listened to her lungs, and heart.

“Yep, I would say that she just has the stomach flu, along with just a really bad cough,” Dr. Hyman said after listening to Emma’s lungs, and heart.

“Okay, what can we do for her then?” Kevin asked.

“Let her rest, and there really isn’t anything I can give you or do for you, I hope she gets better in a couple more days,” Dr. Hyman said.

“Okay, thank you,” Dani said as she started gathering her papers and notes up.

The family of three left shortly thereafter without any solutions for poor little Emma, who was just so sick.  “Daddy, are we going home?” Emma said in her little voice.

“Yes, we are going home honey,” Kevin said, as he strapped her into her car seat, and gave Emma her favorite stuffed animal.

“Well, that didn’t go the way that I thought it would,” Kevin said once he got in the car.

“Yea, me neither, I just hope that nothing too serious is wrong with her, I thought that she could have been nicer and at least given her something, not just rest for a couple more days,” Dani said.

“Yea, me too,” Kevin said, as he looked in the child rearview mirror to find that Emma had fallen asleep again.

“What should we do for dinner?” Dani asked.

“Uh, I don’t care, anything you want?” Kevin said.  “Emma probably won’t want to eat anything, so I am fine with anything.”

“Okay, I am thinking something easy, I really don’t feel like cooking and making a mess tonight, so how about we order in Chinese or something easy like that,” Dani said.

“That works for me, or I could go pick up something for the two of us,” Kevin said.

“Okay, either one works for me,” Dani said.  “I just don’t feel like cooking, and especially with Emma.”

“Yea, why don’t I drop you both off at home, and then you tell me what you want, and I will go out and get dinner for us, how does that sound?” Kevin said.

“That sounds great,” Dani said.

Finding Hope – Chapter 14

Kevin, Dani, and Emma had a very nice relaxing night, minus a few times that poor Emma had thrown up.  Kevin and Dani were getting ready for bed, Dani had just checked on Emma, who was sleeping soundly, before going to hers and Kevin’s bedroom to get ready for bed.  Dani was changing her clothes when she heard crying coming from the baby monitor that they had gotten for Emma’s bedroom, earlier this year.

“Mommy’s coming,” Dani said after she had heard crying coming from the baby monitor.  Dani walked out of her and Kevin’s master suite and down the hallway to Emma’s bedroom.  When Dani got to Emma’s bedroom, she turned on the lights to see the poor little girl sitting in a puddle of vomit.

“Oh Emma,” Dani said as she rushed over to her with a bucket in her hands.  Before Dani could get over to Emma, the little girl had vomited again.

“Oh honey, let’s get you cleaned up,” Dani said as she helped her out of bed.  As soon as Emma stood up, she puked again, this time all over herself, Dani’s legs, and the carpet.

“Mommy, it hurts,” Emma screamed out in pain, as she continued gagging, nothing more was in her stomach though, so she just continued to gag and dry heave.

“Emma, what hurts?” Dani asked her after the little girl seemed to stop dry heaving.

“Everything,” Emma screamed out in pain.

“Oh honey,” Dani said as she felt Emma’s forehead, to find that she was burning up, again.  Emma just continued to scream out in pain.

“What is going on in here?” Kevin asked as he came into his daughter’s bedroom, already dressed in pajamas.

“I don’t know she threw up all over her bed, and then I got her out of bed, and the next thing I know she was screaming in pain and dry heaving, she has nothing left in her stomach,” Dani said.

“Emma, shhh, it’s okay Emma,” Kevin said as he got down on his knees and gave her a hug.

“Daddy, I don’t like being sick,” Emma said as tears streamed down her cheeks.

“I know you don’t come on let’s get you in the bath and then back into bed, how does that sound?” Kevin asked his daughter who nodded her head.

“Emma, do you want Mommy or Daddy to help you in the bath?” Dani asked her daughter.

“Mommy,” Emma said with tears streaming down her face.

“Okay, I will get all of this cleaned up, and the sheets changed okay,” Kevin said.

“Come on sweetie, let’s go get in the bath,” Dani said, as Emma nodded her head and went with her Mom into the bathroom.  Dani was helping Emma get undressed when she started coughing and gagging once again.  Dani grabbed a bucket and got it under her mouth, just in time for her to start throwing up again.

“Mommy, everything hurts,” Emma cried out after she was done throwing up.

“I know honey, come on let’s get you all cleaned up,” Dani consoled her crying daughter.  It was the only thing she could do at the moment to keep her calm and to stay calm herself.  Poor Emma had taken a turn for the worse tonight.  Dani couldn’t believe that the doctor hadn’t seen any of this when they saw him this afternoon.

“Mommy, it hurts,” Emma cried out, she was now sweating, probably from the high fever that she had been running this past week or so.

“I know it does honey, do you think we can get you in the bath to get all cleaned up,” Dani asked the little girl, who nodded her head, as she helped her get undressed and in the bathtub.

Dani had just gotten done shampooing Emma’s hair when she started coughing again, big deep coughs like she had been doing this past week or so.  The coughs stopped as soon as they had started, just like every other time this past week.  Dani took a deep breath and continued washing Emma up.

“Do you need any help in here, I got her sheets changed,” Kevin said as he came into the bathroom.

“Uh, yea if you don’t mind getting her dried off while I go get her new pajamas.  I think we need to take her in, she has taken a turn for the worse again, this is the worst I have seen her,” Dani said, as she left the room to go fetch her new pajamas.

“Daddy,” Emma cried out when she saw him with a big fluffy towel ready to dry her off.

“Daddy, I have to go potty,” Emma said.

“Thank you for telling us honey,” Kevin said as he lifted her on to the toilet, as Emma peed.

“Emma Bear are you done,” Kevin asked.

“No, I poop too,” Emma said as she started having diarrhea again.

“Emma, do you want Mommy and Daddy to stay in here with you?” Kevin asked his daughter, who was sitting on the toilet.  Emma started coughing and gagging right then, before starting to puke.

“Emma,” Dani shrieked, as she rushed to get a bucket under Emma’s mouth.  Poor Emma was throwing up all over the bathroom.

“Owie,” Emma screamed out in pain as she grabbed at her little tummy after she was done throwing up.

“Emma, it’s okay, shhh,” Dani said, as she tried to get her daughter calmed down.

“Mommy, it hurts,” Emma screamed as tears were dripping down her face.

“What hurts honey?” Dani asked, her daughter, hoping not to get the same answer that Emma had given her about half an hour ago or so.

“Everything,” Emma screamed out in pain.  Of course, they got the same answer.

“Emma is your tummy hurting,” Dani said, as she got down in front of her vomit covered daughter and looked at her stomach.  Emma’s poor stomach was now swollen.

“Kev come look at this, her tummy is swollen,” Dani said, as Kevin got down in front of the toilet to look at her stomach too.

“Emma does this hurt,” Kevin said, as he gently touched her stomach.

“Yea, my tummy is hurting a lot,” Emma said as tears started streaming down her face.

“What do you think we should do, I mean do you think we should go in, or can this wait until the morning?” Dani asked concerned, as she looked at poor Emma’s swollen stomach.

“I don’t know, she has been throwing up for a week now, I really don’t think this is the stomach flu, if it was, I think we would all be sick, by now,” Kevin said.

“True, but do you think we can wait until morning, I am just surprised that Dr. Hyman didn’t really see this as an issue,” Dani said.

“Yea, I think she can wait until the morning, if her symptoms don’t get worse or something changes, I think we are fine, but first thing in the morning, we should call again,” Kevin said.

“Okay, come on Emma, let’s get you in another quick bath, and then you can go back to bed, how does that sound,” Dani said, as Emma nodded.

About ten minutes later, Emma was in back in her own bed sleeping soundly.  “She is so sick.  I just hope she isn’t up for the whole night, like she was when we were in Texas,” Dani said after she and Kevin had got Emma into bed.  Emma practically fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow, she was just so exhausted.

“Well do you want her to sleep in our room tonight, that way if she does get sick, she is near one or both of us,” Kevin said.

“I don’t want to move her now, she just fell asleep, if she wakes up, we will move her in with us,” Dani said.

“Come on let’s go get some sleep then before she wakes up again,” Kevin said, it now being close to midnight.

“Yea, I am exhausted, I just hope that we aren’t up with her all night,” Dani said.

“Yea, me neither,” Kevin said as both him and Dani crawled into bed.  Both Kevin and Dani, got about three more hours of sleep, before they heard gagging coming from the monitor.

“I got her,” Kevin said as he got up out of the bed and rushed down to Emma’s bedroom to find her actually throwing up in the bucket that Dani had sat next to her on the bed.

“Daddy, I threws ups in the buckets,” Emma said proudly.

“Yea, I see that honey, good job,” Kevin said.

“Yea, I felt the throw ups coming up from my tummys, and I grabbed the buckets and threws ups into it,” Emma said.

“Good job honey,” Kevin said.  “Now, are you done, or do you need the bucket again?”

“More throws ups want to come out Daddy,” Emma said.

“Okay honey uses the bucket,” Kevin gently reminded his daughter.

“It’s okay honey,” Kevin said as Emma continued coughing and gagging until her nearly empty stomach was actually empty.

“Daddy, I don’t like being sick,” Emma cried out, tears streaming down her face, after she was done throwing up

“I don’t think anyone likes being sick Emma.  Now, Emma, do you want to come sleep in with Mommy and Daddy or do you want to stay here?” Kevin asked his four-year-old daughter.

“Mommy and Daddy,” Emma said as tears came down her cheeks.

“Do you want to walk, or do you want Daddy to carry you,” Kevin asked the little girl who put her arms out for her father to pick her up.

“Come on Emma,” Kevin said as he uncovered her and then lifted her up into his arms.  “Now, before we go into bed with Mommy, do you have to go potty?”

“No, I sleepy,” Emma said, as she yawned.

“Okay honey let’s go get you in bed,” Kevin said as he walked back to his and Dani’s room.

“Is she okay,” Dani mouthed to Kevin when they came back into the room.

“Yea, when I got to her room, she was throwing up in the bucket,” Kevin said, as he laid his sleeping daughter next to his wife in bed.

“Gosh, she is burning up again, we can’t seem to get this fever to break,” Dani said.

“I know, and it seems like it spikes after she throws up, but then again, maybe that is just when we are feeling her forehead,” Kevin said.

“No, the other day when we were in Texas, I went and felt her forehead when she was sleeping in between throwing up, and it didn’t feel as hot as this does,” Dani said, as she got out of bed.

“Where are you going?” Kevin asked his almost 7-month pregnant wife.

“I am going to get a thermometer to check her temperature,” Dani said, as she walked out of their room.

“Dani, she just fell asleep,” Kevin said as he got up and followed her.

“I know, that is why I am using this one,” Dani said as she walked downstairs to find the thermometer that they had used on her earlier.  Dani grabbed the thermometer and headed back upstairs to their master bedroom.

“Mommy, I’m sorry, my tummy was hurting and then I threws ups,” Emma said as she was now sitting in another puddle of vomit.  Kevin and Dani had cleaned up countless puddles of vomit this past week.  It seemed like every time Emma puked, unless they got it in a bucket, Kevin or Dani would be cleaning up a puddle of vomit.

“Oh honey, it’s okay,” Dani said.

“I know Daddy didn’t exactly give you a bucket, did he?  Should we get you cleaned up?” Kevin asked the little girl.

“Mommy, can I have some water,” Emma cried out after she was done throwing up.

“Sure honey, I will go get it for you,” Kevin said as he walked out of the master bedroom and down to the kitchen to get her a small glass of water.

When Kevin got back up to their master bedroom, Dani already had Emma in the bathroom and was stripping the sheets.  “Dan, I can do this, go be with Emma,” Kevin said.

“Well, she is sitting on the potty, so I figured I would get a start on this,” Dani said, as she carried all of the vomit covered sheets and started walking to the door.

“Dan, where are you going?  It is 3 am, can’t this wait until the morning?” Kevin said.

“I was going to go put this in the wash,” Dani said.

“Dani, go take care of Emma, I will take care of the wash, and putting the sheets and blankets on the bed,” Kevin said.

“Okay,” Dani yawned, as she went into the master suite to get little Emma in the bathtub.

By the time Dani had gotten Emma out of the bathtub and dried off and in clean pajamas, Kevin had changed the sheets on the bed, went all the way downstairs to put the blankets and sheets in the wash, and was upstairs again.

“Daddy,” Emma said as she ran into his arms.

“Come on Emma, let’s get into bed,” Kevin said, as he picked her up and put her into bed with him and Dani.  Emma didn’t move around too much in her sleep, plus she was so tiny that both her parents could easily fit in the bed with her.

“Daddy, can I have my water now?” the little girl asked.

“Sure, take slow small sips honey,” Kevin said, as he handed her the glass of water.  Emma didn’t listen to her father though; she took big, long gulps and had the glass of water down in about five seconds or less.  A couple seconds later though, poor Emma was heaving and gagging again.

“Emma,” Kevin said as he grabbed the bucket that he had sat on the bedside table and thrust it under her mouth for her to start vomiting the water that she had just guzzled down.

After Emma was done throwing up, she collapsed onto the bed exhausted and pretty much fell asleep right away.

“I am going to dump this out, and then get back into bed,” Kevin yawned.

“Okay, I still want to take her temperature, so I am going to do that, and then get into bed also,” Dani said, as she grabbed the thermometer.

“What is her temp?” Kevin said as he came back into the bedroom with an empty clean bucket in his hands.

“It was 102.5,” Dani said quietly, as she felt the little girl’s head.  “She is so sick.”

“Well, I think we need to take her somewhere tomorrow if we can’t get this fever to break or get her to keep something down, she has been so sick for over a week now, she can’t even keep water down,” Kevin said.

“I know,” Dani said, as she yawned.

“Let’s try to get some sleep, before she is up again,” Kevin said.

It wasn’t more than an hour later, and poor Emma was awake again.  “Mommy, my tummy is hurting,” Emma said, as she started crying.  The little girl was sitting on the bed sweating.

“Here Emma, use the bucket,” Dani said as she sat up and placed a bucket in Emma’s lap.

“Mommy,” Emma screamed out as she started coughing and gagging, before starting to throw up.

“Emma, what’s going on?” Kevin said as he reached over and turned on the bedside lamp to see Emma throwing up.

“Oh honey, it’s okay, shhh take some deep breaths,” Dani said, as she pulled Emma’s hair back out of her face, just so they wouldn’t have to give her another bath.

“Mommy my tummy really hurts,” Emma said as she grabbed at her little tummy.

“Emma, what does it feel like?” Kevin asked, as he was already taking out his phone to go onto WebMD.

“It just hurts,” Emma screamed out in pain, as she all of a sudden started sweating a lot.

“Oh Emma,” Dani said, as she could see the sweat all of a sudden dripping off of her cheeks and forehead.  It was almost like she had just played outside for hours on end and came in sweating.

“This says here that she could have cancer or an intestinal obstruction,” Kevin said.

“Kevin don’t look at that stuff, it’s always wrong, she probably just has a little flu bug or something like that, you never know what kids pick up from preschool,” Dani said.  Emma had started preschool last month, and she absolutely loved it.

“Dani, I don’t think this is a little flu bug, she has been puking and has had diarrhea for a week now, along with a fever.  I think it’s probably something more, that’s all I’m saying,” Kevin said.

“Well, we will take her to the doctor in the morning again if she isn’t better, for now though, let’s try to get her to sleep again,” Dani said.

“Okay,” Kevin said, as he looked down at Emma, who was laying down on her side with her thumb stuck in her mouth while she was hugging her favorite stuffed animal, a teddy bear, named Teddy.

“Shhh, come on let’s go to sleep,” Dani said, as she rubbed Emma’s little back.

“Mommy, I am goings to throws ups agains,” Emma said, as she sat up and put her little hand over her mouth.

“Here you are Emma,” Kevin said as he grabbed the bucket that was on his nightstand and got it under her mouth, milliseconds before she started throwing up.

“Oh Emma,” Dani said after her little girl was done throwing up.

“I sleepy,” Emma said, as she laid down on her side again and stuck her thumb in her mouth and dozed off to sleep.

Finding Hope – Chapter 15

The next morning, little Emma was not feeling much better, but she hadn’t puked since the middle of last night.  She had thrown up only one more time, but she did sleep on and off throughout the rest of the night.  Poor Emma kept on sweating and complaining that her back and tummy were hurting.  Both Kevin and Dani were up with Emma pretty much the rest of the night.  They were going to see how the day goes and take her into the doctors if needed.

“Emma, we need to get fluids in you, do you want something to drink honey?” Dani asked the little girl.  Every time this past week whenever they gave Emma something to drink, she puked in a couple of minutes, but since Emma hadn’t thrown up since early this morning, Dani decided they could try something with her.

            “Yea,” Emma said quietly.

“I will go get it,” Kevin said.

“Kev, Gatorade,” Dani said, as Kevin nodded and left the living room to go into the kitchen and get her a small glass of Gatorade.

While Kevin was gone, getting the Gatorade for Emma, the baby started kicking.  “Emma, do you want to feel the baby kick,” Dani asked Emma, who was laying on Dani’s lap.

“Yea,” Emma crocked out, as she sat up.  Dani took Emma’s little hand and put it on her stomach right where their baby was kicking.

“It tickles,” Emma said as she smiled and laughed a little bit.

Kevin came in right then, to find Emma smiling and laughing.  “What’s going on in here?” Kevin asked as he sat down on the couch next to his wife and daughter.

“The baby is tickling me,” Emma laughed.  Both Kevin and Dani were happy to see a smile on Emma’s face and to hear her laugh.  This past week, Emma had been sick, she didn’t want to do much of anything.

“The baby is tickling you?” Kevin asked, as he smiled and reached over to touch his wife’s protruding stomach.  He was glad that Emma was smiling and laughing at the moment at least.

“Yea, you like Daddy, don’t you?” Dani said.

“The baby likes me too, right Mommy?” Emma asked in her sweet little voice.

“Yes, you little sister loves you very much, just like your Daddy and I do,” Dani said.

“Emma, what do you think we should name the baby?” Kevin asked his daughter.  Kevin and Dani had talked about some names, but they haven’t actually decided on any yet.  One of the top names they had on their list was Alena and a couple of other names.  Kevin really liked Madison, but Dani said that they couldn’t name the baby after a city, so that was out.

“Hannah, Madison, Isabella, or Jazmine,” Emma said confidently.

“Wow, that’s quite the list Emma,” Kevin said.

“Why those names Emma?” Dani asked.

“Because those are my sister’s names,” Emma said.

“You have sisters Emma,” Kevin asked as he turned and looked at her.  He was bewildered that Emma had sisters, and that she hadn’t told them of this.

            “Yea,” Emma said.

“Emma, where are your sisters?” Dani asked, almost afraid to ask.

“Oh, they are in the loud dirty van,” Emma said.

“What do you mean they are in the old dirty van,” Kevin asked panicked.

“That is where they live, I got outs, but they didn’ts,” Emma said.

“Emma, why didn’t you tell us anything about this before,” Dani asked.

“Because no one asked, and I ams nots supposeds to tells anyones about my sisters, becauses I coulds gets into troubles, with Sir,” Emma said.

“Emma, do you know where they are?” Kevin asked.

“Yes, I already told you, in the loud dirty van,” Emma said.

            “Wow,” Dani said.

“Emma, do you remember when that person came to the door a couple of months ago?” Kevin asked Emma.

“Oh, you mean Master.  He is Sir’s friend, and he is sometimes scarier than Sir,” Emma said.

“Emma honey, you have to tell us these things,” Dani said.

“No one asked, and I didn’t want to get into troubles with anyones,” Emma said as she started crying.

“Oh honey,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back.

“Can I talk to you for a second,” Kevin said to his wife, who still looked as shocked as him, their daughter just told them that she had four little sisters.

“Uh yea, Emma, Mommy has to go talk with Daddy, you stay here and drink this really slow, okay,” Dani said.

“Mommy, can I watch TV?” little Emma crocked out.

“Sure,” Dani said, as she grabbed the remote and turned it on to Disney Channel.

“What do we do, I mean, we have to find these four girls, if there are even four little girls out there,” Kevin said as him and Dani went into the kitchen to talk, as he blinked back tears, just thinking about how awful shape Emma was in when she came to live with them a couple of months ago.

“I know, I don’t know what to do, I mean it could take months or even years to find them, that is if we do ever find them,” Dani said, as tears streamed down her cheeks.

“Oh Dani,” Kevin said, as he hugged his wife.

“Kevin, what if we can’t find them, or what if we find them too late,” Dani sobbed into her husband’s chest.

“It’s okay, I am going to call the police right now, and see if they can track down the big white van that has these girls,” Kevin said, as he pulled out his cell phone and stepped out of the room.

“Is Daddy going to find my little sisters?” Emma asked, as Dani came over to where a very pale shivering Emma was sitting on the couch.

“Here, let’s drink some of this special red drink,” Dani said as she took the glass of Gatorade and handed it to Emma.  Emma took one little sip of the red Gatorade.  Dani didn’t exactly know how to answer Emma’s question about Kevin finding her little sisters.

“How’s that Emma?” Dani asked as she let the little girl snuggle into her.  Emma shrugged her shoulders and shivered.  Dani pulled the blanket up over Emma and her, so that way little Emma wouldn’t be so cold.

“Mommy,” Emma said as she coughed a little bit, and threw red up all over the blanket, Dani, the couch, and the floor.

“Oh Emma, it’s okay honey,” Dani soothed.

“Mommy everything hurts,” Emma said after she was done throwing up.

“Oh honey, I know you don’t feel good, do you?” Dani said, as she felt the little girls burning head again.

“No, I don’t,” Emma said as she shivered.

“Here come on let’s go get you cleaned up,” Dani said, as she went to move Emma off of her lap.

“Mommy, why is the room spinning?” Emma slurred out, right before she passed out on Dani’s lap.

“Kevin,” Dani shrieked, as Emma passed out on her lap and started rolling off of her lap.  Dani grabbed her baby girl and held her tight as Kevin ran into the room.

“Oh gosh, what happened?” Kevin said as he rushed over to Dani and Emma.  Emma had thrown up the Gatorade and what appeared to be blood.

“She threw up all over and then passed out,” Dani said as she tried to keep a hold of Emma, so she didn’t roll off of her lap.

“Yea, it appears to be blood or something,” Kevin said.

“We need to get her to the hospital now,” Dani said.

“Do you want me to call 911?” Kevin asked.

“No, it will be quicker if we drive her,” Dani said, as Kevin took Emma off of her lap and ran towards the garage with her in his arms.

“Kev, wait for me, I will ride in the back with her and hold her, I don’t want her in the car seat,” Dani said as she waddled behind them.

Once loaded in the car, the small family of three rushed to the hospital.  Dani was holding Emma in her lap, while Kevin drove to the hospital fast, but still safe.  It typically took them about twenty minutes to get to the Children’s Hospital, but since they were in such a rush, they got there in just under ten minutes.  Kevin pulled into the Emergency Room Parking Lot, got out of the car, opened the back door, pulled out Emma, and ran into the Emergency Room.  Thankfully, Dani was there, because Kevin didn’t even close the doors or lock the car, before running into the Emergency Room with Emma in his arms.

By the time Dani got into the Emergency Room, Kevin had already checked in Emma, and they were being rushed to a triage room in the corner of the large room.

“Emma please wake up for Mommy,” Dani said as she stood next to the gurney that the doctors had brought over for Kevin to set her on.  It was then that their little girl started having a seizure.

“Okay, we really need to look at her, you can stay here with her, but we do need to get in here and look at her,” the nice doctor said.

“Oh Emma,” Dani yelled, as the doctors and nurses started crowding in around the gurney that Emma was laying on.

“I need them out of the room,” one of the doctors yelled, as Kevin tried to drag his wife out of the triage room and into the hallway.

“Kev, she is so sick,” Dani sobbed as she hid her face in his shoulder.

“I know,” Kevin said with tears streaming down his face.

“Hi, are you Emma’s parents?” a nice young doctor said as she came out of the room where they were working on Emma what felt like an hour later, where in reality it was probably only five to ten minutes later.

“What is wrong with my baby?  Is she okay?” Dani asked right away.

“We are working on her, she is awake right now, but she did throw up blood two more times,” the nice doctor said.

“Oh Emma,” Dani said as she rested her hand on her pregnant belly.  It wasn’t more than an hour prior that they were at home talking about the baby and Emma’s sisters, and then Emma threw up blood and passed out.  Yes, they knew that she was sick, but they didn’t realize that she was this sick.

“What is going on, how long has she been sick for?” the doctor asked.

“Well last week we went down to Texas to visit my family for Thanksgiving, and she threw up the whole plane ride down there, we just thought it was airsickness, so we didn’t think too much of it.  We just helped her get through it and then when we landed, she seemed to be feeling better.  So, we went off to my parent’s house, and when as soon as we got there, she threw up.  Then it was basically nonstop since then,” Kevin said.

“She has also been complaining about her back hurting, I would say that started a couple days after she started throwing up, we just thought it was the flu, but when she threw up blood and passed out, we obviously freaked out and brought her in,” Dani said.

“You guys did the right thing with brining her in, she is pretty sick.  I see in her records that you took her to her doctor yesterday, right?” the doctor asked.

“Yes, she said that it was the flu and to go home and rest,” Dani said.

“Well, this is definitely not the flu, we would like to run some tests on her to see what is going on?” the doctor said.

“Yes, that is fine, run as many tests as you need too.  Can we go see her before you run the tests?” Kevin asked.

“Oh yea of course you can go back and see her,” the doctor said.  “Just be quiet.

“Thank you so much,” Dani said, as they quietly walked into Emma’s emergency room.

“Mommy,” Emma said from her spot on the bed.

“Hi Emma, how are you feeling?” Dani asked.

“Yucky, my tummy is owies,” Emma said, as she reached out for Dani.

“Oh sweetie,” Dani said as she came and sat on the side of the bed.

“Hi Emma Bear, how are you feeling?” Kevin said as he sat down on the other side of the bed.

“Daddy, where am I?” Emma asked her little sweet voice.

“Oh honey, you are at the hospital, you got really sick and went to sleep for a while, so Daddy and Mommy brought you to the hospital,” Kevin said.

“Oh okay, what is this?” Emma said as she looked at her IV with tears streaming down her face.

“It is there to help you feel better honey, it’s okay,” Dani said, as Emma nodded and sniffled a little bit.

“Tummy,” Emma said as she grabbed her little tummy.

“Here honey,” Kevin said as he grabbed the pink basin at the end of her bed and sat it by her in case she needed to throw up.

“Mommy,” Emma said as she coughed a little bit.

“Emma, here,” Dani said as grabbed the bucket and held it under her mouth for her to throw up again, this time it was most definitely bright red blood.

“Shhh, Emma,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back while she was throwing up.

“Oh gosh Emma,” Dani freaked out, as her daughter was throwing up bright red blood.

“Mommy, the room is spinning again,” Emma slurred out, before passing out once again.

“Help, my daughter just threw up bright red blood and then passed out,” Kevin said as he ran out into the emergency room hallway.  Soon Emma’s tiny emergency room was once again filled with doctors and nurses.

“Emma, baby, Mommy is right here,” Dani said through tears as she tried to hold onto Emma’s little hand as she was being pushed out of the way.

“I am sorry Mam, but I need you to leave,” a doctor nicely said to Dani.

“I can’t leave my baby girl in here,” Dani sobbed.

“Come on Dan, we have to let the doctor do his work,” Kevin said as he directed her out into the hallway.

“Kev, what is going to happen to her, this was exactly what she did at home,” Dani said through her tears.

“I know Dani,” Kevin said as he hugged her.

They waited out in the hallway by the door for what seemed like an hour, when it was probably only ten to fifteen minutes, before a doctor and nurse came out.

            “Hi,” Kevin said.

“Hi, are you Emma’s parents?” a doctor that they had never seen before said to them.

“Yes, we are,” Kevin said, as he held Dani’s hand as they embraced for the news.

“We aren’t sure what is going on with her, we were able to get her to wake up, but she is very disoriented and out of it.  We do want to keep her here for observation and do an MRI.  You can go in and see her, but we are actually going to be transferring her upstairs to the PICU in a few minutes,” the doctor said.

“The PICU?  What is that?” Dani asked.

“Oh sorry, the PICU is the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, once again, we aren’t sure what is going on with her, so we want to keep her in there at least overnight,” the nice doctor said.  “Once we know what is going on, we will talk about transferring her to another unit.”

“Okay,” Dani said, as she swallowed.

“You guys can go in and be with her, we should be taking her shortly,” the doctor said, as Kevin and Dani went in the tiny emergency room that had a bed that little Emma was laying in.

“Oh Emma, Mommy is right here,” Dani said through her tears, as she held on to her little hand.

“Daddy is here too Emma Bear,” Kevin said as he touched her leg which was covered up by a thin blanket.

“How did this happen?  This morning, she was just sick, and now this, less then twelve hours later,” Dani said as she wiped her eyes.

            “I don’t know babe, I wish I did, but I don’t know,” Kevin said.

“Daddy,” little Emma moaned from her bed.

“Yes, Daddy is right here honey,” Kevin said as he sat down on the bed and grabbed a hold of her hand.

“Mommy is here too sweetie,” Dani said as she grabbed a hold of her other hand.

After they heard Daddy come from sweet little Emma, she was out again, so they didn’t really hear anything else from her, just some moaning and groaning every once and a while, but no words.

“We are ready to transfer her upstairs,” a transferring nurse who had just come into the room had said.

“Okay,” Dani said as she stood up and made sure that they had everything that they needed.  They hadn’t even gotten the bag out of the car yet.  They were both just worried about Emma right now.

Once they were upstairs and in another tiny room, a doctor came into the room to check on Emma and to introduce himself.  “Hi, I am Dr. Miller,” the doctor said when he came into the room.

“Hi, do you know what is wrong with her, she said Daddy down in the Emergency Room, but then she hasn’t said anything else, just some moaning and groaning every once in a while, but no actual words that we could understand,” Dani frantically said.

“I have reviewed her files, it looks like you brought her in, because she had vomited some blood this morning and then fainted.  It looks like she has also been sick for like a week or so too,” Dr. Miller said.

“Yea, she has also been complaining about her back hurting a lot too,” Kevin said.

“Yea, I see that in here too, I am not really sure what is going on, and why she would have passed out and why she hasn’t come to for like half an hour or so.  We are going to run some tests on her.  We want to do an MRI to see what is going on and we will also do lab work.  It also looks like they haven’t done any lab work.  I will have someone come in and get her ready for both of those tests,” Dr. Miller said.

            “Thanks,” Dani said.

“We should call family and let them know what is going on, plus Riley and Maci will have to go out soon,” Kevin said, as he stretched.

“Yea, we should,” Dani yawned.  This pregnancy was making her exhausted and then on top of all of this apparently Emma has little sisters too and they didn’t really know what was going on with them.

“I am going to go call them and get a snack, you want me to bring anything back for you,” Kevin said, as he got up from his chair and leaned down and gave Emma a kiss on her head and then turned and gave his pregnant wife a kiss on her head.

“Call and check with the police to see if they have any more information on Emma’s sisters and please don’t tell anyone yet,” Dani said.

“Okay,” Kevin said before he left Emma’s PICU room.

As soon as Kevin got out of the PICU he leaned up against a wall and started sobbing.  This was all too much for him.  Once he pulled himself together, he took his phone out of his pocket and called his parents first.  He needed to talk with his Mom, they were still in Texas with Frankie.  He would get to the Deleasa’s in a while.  He knew that Riley and Maci needed to get out, but he just needed to hear his Mom’s voice right now.  “Hi Mom,” Kevin said when she answered the phone.

Denise was outside hanging out by the pool watching Frankie swim in the pool and play with his father.  The young boy had tried to get her to come in the pool multiple times, but she had refused every time.  So, when her phone rang, she picked it up.  As soon as she heard Kevin’s voice, she knew that something was wrong.  “Kevin, what’s wrong?” Denise asked panicked as soon as he said, ‘hi mom.’

“It’s Emma, she is in the hospital, she is really sick Mom,” Kevin said, as he started to cry once again.

“Oh no, what is wrong,” Denise said worried.

“We took her to the doctor yesterday and he said that it was probably just a bad flu and he sent us home with instructions to let her rest and if she wasn’t any better in three days to bring her back in.  Well Dani and I decided on the way home that if she wasn’t any better by this afternoon, we were going to bring her in.  Well, this morning she took a turn for the worse,” Kevin said as he sniffled.

“What do you mean took a turn for the worse honey,” Denise said through tears.  By this time Paul was out of the pool and over by her, realizing that something must be really wrong when he saw his wife crying on the phone.

“She threw up blood and then passed out at home, so we rushed her to the hospital.  They don’t know what is wrong with her Mom,” Kevin said, as he started sobbing.

“What hospital are you guys at?” Denise said, as she put the phone on speaker so her husband could hear what was going on.

“Mom she is in the PICU, she woke up, threw up more blood and then passed out when she got here again, and she hasn’t woken up yet.  They aren’t sure what is going on, they are going to be running tests on her, but Mom she is so tiny in the hospital bed, and she has so many tubes and everything coming out of her,” Kevin said.

“We will be there, tell her that we love her, and we will see you guys soon, I am going to book us the first flight out,” Paul said.

“Thank you, Dad,” Kevin said as he sniffled a little bit.

“You are welcome, now go take care of your little girl,” Paul said.

“I will, love you guys,” Kevin said through his silent tears.

“We love you too, bye,” Denise said, as they hung up.
