I Don't Care About the Presents by JonasLuvr425

This is a Christmas three-shot I wrote AGES ago... like probably over a decade ago or close to it. I didn't update it at all because I love it so much so keep in mind that everyone's ages are... a lot younger and this was before Sophie and Pri. I hope you enjoy! Oh also all the titles are lines from Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas is You!

Chapter 1: All the Lights are Shining by JonasLuvr425

The Jonas household was a flurry of hustling and bustling as the entire family set up last minute decorations for the Christmas party they were holding for other family and friends. Joe and Kevin were outside hanging up lights around the windows and doorframe. Kevin stood on the ladder attaching lights as Joe held it securely in place.

“Hey, Kev…” Joe said, thinking of what he was going to say.

“What do you think of Emma?” Joe asked. Emma was Joe’s girlfriend of two and a half years.

He had met her during one of their tours. He and his brothers had walked into the dressing room right when she turned around and smacked Joe in the chest unknowingly. She had been setting up the dressing room and hadn’t heard them come in. As soon as their eyes met, he knew he needed to get to know her.

“She’s really cool. You guys make an awesome couple,” Kevin said nonchalantly.

“You think so?” Joe asked, tapping a finger against the metal of the ladder.

“Yeah. Why?” he asked, giving his brother a concerned look.

“Uh, no reason,” Joe said, shifting his gaze down.

Inside, Nick and Frankie were putting up last minute decorations on the tree. Nick hung one of his personal favorites up near the top; a small, red nutcracker with his name on the base. Frankie was busy attaching plastic icicles to certain light bulbs.

“Mom said the Johnsons are coming,” Frankie said. “Nick’s eyes widened and the ornament he was holding slipped out of his fingers and hit the floor with a slight thud.

         “You okay, Nick?”

“What did you say?” Nick asked, blinking and lifting his eyes from the dropped ornament on the floor.

“I asked if you were okay…”

         “No. No, before that.”

“Oh… the Johnsons are coming,” Frankie said, shrugging his shoulders.

“As in Nicole’s family?” Nick asked, suddenly feeling all clammy and his heart was racing.

“Yes, Nick. Nicole Johnson and her parents are coming tonight. Geez, it’s not like it’s a big deal or anything. Her parents are friends with Mom and Dad anyway.”

“Yeah… yeah, you’re right,” Nick said, nodding his head and picking up the ornament as his curls bounced back into place.

“Whatever,” Frankie said, rolling his eyes.

In the kitchen, Denise and Danielle were busy baking last minute cookies, as well as preparing the main course for dinner. Denise was peeling potatoes as Danielle pulled the last set of cookies out of the oven. She set to dicing carrots while the cookies cooled.

“Those cookies smell wonderful, Danielle,” Denise said, smiling up at her daughter-in-law.

“Thank you. They’re from one of my grandmother’s oldest recipes,” Danielle replied, placing some of the newly cut carrots in a bowl on the counter. She set the knife down and picked up a spatula to move the cookies.

As her hand smoothly moved from sheet to rack with cookies on the spatula, she suddenly felt a wave of nausea hit. The spatula slipped through her fingers and fell with a light clang on the marble countertop. She clutched her stomach and walked as quickly as possible to the adjacent bathroom.

“Danielle, are you all right?” Denise asked concerned, putting down the half-peeled potato.

Danielle stopped in the doorway to the bathroom and turned to her mother-in-law.

“Fine,” she gasped before shutting the door and locking it. She dashed to the toilet and knelt down, retching into the porcelain white bowl just in time. She sat there for a minute, making sure it had passed.

She took a deep breath and flushed the toilet, wiping the sweat from her brow. She grabbed a washcloth from the cabinet and wet it with warm water, wiping her face. She looked up into the mirror making sure nothing had splashed out at her. She took another deep breath, dried her face, and went back out to the kitchen. Denise stood in front of the door with Kevin who had a worried expression on his face.

“Dani, are you okay? Mom came and got me saying you were sick,” he said, wrapping his arms tenderly around his wife’s waist. He brought a hand up to her cheek and felt her skin. “You don’t have a fever.”

“Kevin, I’m fine. I promise,” she said, patting her husband’s cheek. “Just a small… bug.”

“Will you make it through the night?” he asked, worry etched in his eyes.

“Yes, I’ll make it,” she said with a slight laugh. “Really, it’s nothing to worry about.”

Chapter 2: Laughter Fills the Air by JonasLuvr425

Emma arrived at the Jonas household within the next hour. Danielle had called her earlier that morning saying that she had something important to tell everyone and she didn’t want to miss out. As she pulled into the driveway and saw Joe and Frankie through the window, she couldn’t help but smile and feel butterflies in her stomach. Over the past few weeks, Joe had been acting differently. He was so secretive and kind of skittish. As the sound of her car door closing echoed, she saw Joe turn to look out the window and smile when he saw her. She lifted her hand and waved before making her way up the front steps, the door opening before she could grab the doorknob.

“Hey,” Joe whispered, reaching an arm out and wrapping it around her waist as she walked inside into his arms.

“Hi,” she said, giving him a kiss as he slid her coat down her shoulders. She wrapped her arms around his neck, squeezing him tight and looked over his shoulder. “The house looks beautiful.”

“Well thank you. It took me hours, but I got it all done,” he joked.

“Did you cook, too?” she asked, as the smells wafted from the kitchen.

“Yes, I hope the cookies didn’t burn!”

“Okay, okay, what is it you really did by yourself?” she asked, resting a hand on his chest as his right arm slid around her waist.

“Well, I helped Dad and Kevin put up the tree, Kevin and I put the lights up outside… and… I helped lick the frosting bowl clean when Mom and Danielle were done.”

“Joseph Jonas you are still five years old.”

“Yes, I am,” he said defiantly, causing her to laugh. “Come on, Mom will want to see you before everyone else gets here.”

“So, when’s present opening time?” she asked as he led her to the kitchen.

“During dessert while we have the fire going and Nick might be playing some songs on the piano. Only one present each tonight, though.”

“I hope mine is a good one,” she joked, patting his stomach.

“Don’t worry, it is,” he said, glancing over at her. She smiled up at him and pecked him on the lips as his heart started to beat just thinking about later. “Hey Mom, look who’s here,” Joe said as they entered the kitchen.

“Oh!” Denise exclaimed, getting up from the table. “Emma, how are you?” she asked, embracing the girl in a hug.

“I’m fine Denise, how are you?”

“Fine, just fine,” Denise said, looking over Emma’s shoulder to smile at Joe who cleared his throat and stuffed his hands in his pockets.

“Did I hear the voice of the girl who’s way too good for my brother?” Nick asked, coming around the corner into the kitchen.

“Nicholas!” Emma exclaimed, hugging Nick. Joe came up and smacked the back of Nick’s head. “Joe, that was unnecessary.”

“He said you were too good for me!” Joe said, holding up his hands in defense as his girlfriend walked towards him with a glare in her eyes.

“Honey… I am too good for you,” she joked.

“Oh really?” he asked as the doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it!” Kevin Sr. called from the living room. “Johnson family! Come on in.”

“I’ve met them, right?” Emma asked Joe as they all turned to see them come in.

“Um… I think so. Emma’s met Nicole, right Nick?” he asked, turning to look at his brother. “Nick?”

Nick stood there frozen. His eyes open wide and his skin looking slightly paler than it had before. Joe shoved Nick’s shoulder and his head snapped around to Joe.

         “What was that for?”

“You were like a zombie as soon as Dad said the Johnsons were here.”

“No, I wasn’t,” Nick said quickly.

“Okay… moving on,” Joe said, leading Emma to the front to re-introduce her to the Johnsons.

Nick watched as Joe led Emma to Amber and Spencer, Nicole and Jessica’s parents. To their left, Frankie was showing Jessica the tree. He heard someone come up next to him and expecting it to be his mother, he turned toward the body. His eyes widened when he saw that it was Nicole.

“Hi Nick,” she said, giving him a slight smile.

“Oh, uh, hey Nicole,” he said, clearing his throat and running his fingers through his hair. “Uh… how are you?”

“I’m good. It’s good to see you again. We haven’t seen each other since July.”
“Yeah, long time. How’s uh… Jeremy?”

“Oh… we broke up a few months ago,” she said, looking down at her shoes. Nick couldn’t help but smile wide, feeling so much happier. As she started to look up, he quickly wiped the smile from his face.

“I’m sorry,” he said, putting a hand on her arm and feeling the shivers run through his fingertips.

“No, it’s okay. I’m totally over it,” she said. “So… uh… how’s the whole song writing, music making thing going?”

“Really great… I’m actually working on a few new songs,” he said, happy to be talking about his main passion in life.

         “What are they about?”

“Um… you know… the normal stuff songs are about,” he said, avoiding the question.

“Actually, I wouldn’t know anything about song writing.”

“Okay, but you’ve listened to songs so…”

“Nick,” she said with a laugh, nudging his side with her elbow.

“Hey, you know how a magician never reveals his secrets?”

“Yeah…” she said slowly, drawing the word out.

“Well, a musician never reveals his inspirations,” he said and she couldn’t help but smile.

After Emma had been re-acquainted with the Johnsons, she made her way over to Kevin and Danielle. Over their shoulders, she could see Nick talking with Nicole in the kitchen. Kevin enveloped her in a large hug and gave her a kiss on the cheek. She smiled at Danielle as they embraced.

“You look really nice tonight,” Danielle said as they held each other at arms’ length.

“Thanks. I just had this feeling that tonight was going to be something special,” she said, glancing over her shoulder to smile at Joe who was talking with his parents. He winked at her and continued his conversation and she turned back to Kevin and Danielle.

“You look… different,” she said, eyeing Danielle.

“Do I?” Danielle asked, glancing at Kevin. “Well, it has been a week since I last saw you,” she joked.

“No… no it’s something else,” Emma said, tapping her chin with her finger.

“Uh, Kevin, would you mind if Emma and I talked alone for a bit? Girl stuff and whatnot,” she said, placing a gentle hand on his arm.

“Yeah, sure,” he said, leaning down to kiss her. Danielle waited until he had started a conversation with Mr. Johnson to pull Emma into the downstairs bathroom.

         “Whoa, what’s with the secrecy?”

“I have something that I’m going to tell everyone. Seriously, no one knows and I know you’re suspicious. I knew you were suspicious when we were on the phone, but I can’t tell you and I don’t want you to give it away. So please, no special ‘looks’ over to me or anything like that, okay?” Danielle asked holding Emma’s hands in hers.

“Okay. This is something… good though. Right?” Emma asked raising an eyebrow.

“Yeah, yeah everything’s fine. I promise,” she said, repeating her words to Kevin from earlier.

Chapter 3: Holding on to Me so Tight by JonasLuvr425

The dinner that they had all eaten had been a raucous affair. Recounted stories of Christmas’ past were told and laughter filled the air. They settled in the front room where the glow of the Christmas tree was shining on the walls making the atmosphere filled with hues of red, green, and blue. Kevin Sr. turned on the sound system and put in a mixture of Christmas CDs and let the sound set in the background as everyone mingled.

Nicole stood by the Christmas tree alone, a small smile playing across her lips. Nick looked up from the conversation he was having with his father and Spencer to watch her. He couldn’t help but smile as she circled the tree, touching an ornament every once in a while. He saw her stop, stare, and then reach up and touch his favorite ornament, the red nutcracker.

“Excuse me,” he said, standing up and slowly walking towards the tree. He leaned up against the doorway between the living room, where the tree was, and the kitchen. “Like it?” he asked.

“Very much. I collect nutcrackers. I get a new one every Christmas," she said, turning to smile at him.

“So, you were scoping out mine? Planning on stealing it?” he asked with a smirk.

“Oh, that one’s yours? The letters N-I-C-K on the bottom didn’t tip me off at all.”

“Okay, okay, that was a dumb question, I realized after I said it. But you didn’t deny the plan to steal it.”

“You know I would never steal it. I was admiring the color,” she said, slowly walking closer to him.

“Red? You were admiring the color red?” he asked as she continued to walk closer, his heart beating faster.

“Yes, I was as a matter of fact. Got a problem with that?” she asked, stepping even closer. They were less than a foot apart from each other.

“Not at all,” he whispered, his warm breath lingering on her lips.

They stared into each other’s eyes. Nick licked his lips as Nicole’s eyes darted back and forth across his face. Nick clenched his hand which felt cold and clammy.

“Hey!” Joe shouted, causing Nick and Nicole to turn their heads. “You two are under the mistletoe!”

Everyone’s heads turned towards the two young teenagers and Nicole’s cheeks turned pink. Everyone smiled as both Nick and Nicole looked down at their feet. Kevin stood behind Danielle, wrapping his arms around her waist. Joe pulled Emma onto his lap. Both Nick’s and Nicole’s parents smiled as they stood around.

“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!” Frankie and Jessica shouted.

         “So… I guess we should…” Nick said.

“Yeah… tradition and all…” Nicole added.

“Okay…” he said. He reached out, wrapping his arms around her waist. She placed her hands on his shoulders.

Slowly, their heads inched towards each other. Their breaths mixed together and their hearts raced. Her lips tingled as his touched hers. She tangled her fingers in the curls at the base of his neck and slowly he pulled away. Her eyes opened to find his staring into hers.

         “Wow,” she breathed out.

“Yeah,” he said breathlessly. It was silent as they continued to stare at each other.

“Well, it’s about time,” Joe said, slowly clapping his hands together.

“Joseph,” Denise said in a warning tone. Even though he was all grown up, he was still her son.

“Sorry. Well, I think that was a great opening.”

         “What for?” Frankie asked.

         “Present time!”

“I agree,” Kevin Sr. said, walking over to the tree.

Everyone stood up to grab the one present they felt they should open that night. Emma grabbed a large present wrapped in blue from Joe. His eyes widened when he saw and he took it from her.

         “Joe!” she exclaimed.

"Not that one,” he said, setting it down.

         “Why not?”

“Because I have something else that I really want you to open tonight,” he said, taking her hand in his. They joined the circle that everyone had formed. The tradition was to go around in the circle and have everyone go separately. “Frankie, why don’t you go first?”

         “Okay!” Frankie said excitedly.

“Does that mean I have to go last?” Emma whispered in Joe’s ear as Frankie excitedly opened his present.

“Oh, I guess it does,” he said with a smirk.

Emma waited anxiously as everyone opened their presents. She felt like time was going by so slowly. She was curious to know what Joe got her. He kept his arm around her the entire time, gently stroking his fingers up and down her arm. Every once in a while, he would lean over and kiss her forehead. Finally, after he opened his present it was her turn. She sat up and smiled, placing her hands in her lap.

“Okay, where’s my present?” she asked. Joe cleared his throat and scratched the back of his head.

“Can you uh, stand up?” he asked.

         “Just… stand up. Please?”

“Okay…” she said slowly, standing up and looking around at Joe’s family. Joe slid off the couch onto the floor and got on one knee. Emma gasped and brought a hand to her mouth. He put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, opening it up revealing the diamond ring inside.

         “Joe,” she whispered.

“Emma… you laugh at me and you tease me, and I know I’m a total doofus but… you make me feel like sometimes I could be better. Better for you. So, I want to do that. I want to do that for the rest of my life. Emma… would you be my wife?”

“Of course…” she whispered, giving him a smile. He stood up and placed the ring on her finger and she watched it glisten in the light for a moment before he placed his lips on hers. Everyone applauded and Emma smiled as they pulled away. “Because… you know… what would you ever do without me?”

“Nice one!” Kevin said as everyone laughed.

“Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. None of you are invited to the wedding,” Joe joked as he sat down, never losing contact with Emma.

“This is turning into quite an eventful evening,” Denise said with a smile.

“Well…” Danielle said, and every head turned to her. “It might get just a tad more eventful.”

“Babe… what’s going on?” Kevin asked, his eyebrows knitting together.

“Well… I have some news to share with everyone,” she said, looking around. “I’m… pregnant.”

“What?” Kevin asked, jumping up off the couch.

“Dani, that’s great!” Nick said, giving her a hug.

“How long have you known?” Emma asked, leaving Joe’s grasp of her hand to hug Danielle.

         “About two months.”

“Dani this is… I can’t believe… what are… I’m going to be a father!” Kevin finally got out, embracing his wife.

Everyone came over and hugged one another. Laughter and chatter filled the air. Outside, the lights of the decorations of all the neighbors shone brightly. All everyone needed for Christmas that year… was each other.
