Finding Hope – Chapter 8
It had been now been close to three months since the live broadcast. A lot had changed, for starters last month the Jonas Brothers canceled their tour two days before the tour started and then eventually broke up. Let’s just say that October was a very stressful month for both the brothers and fans.
Dani was now over 6 months pregnant. The small family of three was heading to Texas for Thanksgiving weekend today. It was going to be Emma’s first plane ride.
“Emma Bear, it’s time to wake up,” Kevin said as he walked back into her bedroom after taking a shower and finding Emma sprawled out in the middle of their bed with all of the covers off of her sound asleep. Kevin and Danielle had moved Emma to her own room a couple of months ago, to get her used to sleeping in her own room before they moved, and the baby came.
“It’s too early Daddy,” Emma said when she opened her eyes and yawned.
“I know it is early, but we are going to see Glammy and Grandpapa, today,” Kevin said as he pulled her out of bed.
“Okay go brushes your teeth, go potty, change out of pajamas and then we will head to the airport,” Kevin said as he sat her down on the floor to go do those things.
“Emma, here is your toothbrush,” Kevin said as he handed Emma her pink toothbrush that already had strawberry toothpaste on it.
“Daddy, I am done,” Emma said once she had spit in the sink, she then opened her mouth for her Dad to go around once more and make sure she got everything.
“Okay, let’s go potty and get into clean clothes and then we will head to the airport,” Kevin said as he picked Emma up and sat her on the toilet for her to do her business.
“Okay Emma are you done,” Kevin asked when he came back a couple minutes later with a new pull-up and some clothes. They assumed that she was going to sleep on the way to the airport in the car. Emma nodded her head tiredly.
When Kevin helped Emma off of the toilet, he noticed that she had diarrhea. “Emma does your tummy hurt?” Kevin asked as he wiped her little bottom with a washcloth. Emma just nodded her head.
He picked her little body up. “Does it feel like you are going to throw up?” Kevin asked the little girl as Emma shook her head no. “Shhh,” Kevin said as Emma started to cry. “It’s okay Emma Bear.”
Kevin and Dani had decided to hire a car service to take them to the airport this time. Plus, that way they could get the escort that would escort them through security and to the waiting plane.
Kevin and Dani were still running around the house packing last minute essentials while Emma curled up on the edge of the couch and had fallen asleep yet once again.
The limo service picked them up right on time. Kevin first took Emma’s car seat out to the car and strapped it in. They were going to be taking the car seat with them on the trip. Then Kevin came in the house and gently picked up a sleeping Emma and took her out to the car without waking her up.
“We will be right out,” Kevin whispered to the limo driver as he was strapping Emma into the seat. The driver nodded his head as Kevin turned around and went back into the house to help Dani finish packing quickly.
“Dani, the car is here,” Kevin yelled at the bottom of the stairs. She was still upstairs getting packed for the trip.
“Coming, I think we have everything,” Dani said as she left the bedroom and came down the stairs dragging a suitcase along with her. The hour-long ride to the airport was quiet. Dani even fell asleep for a while.
“Kevin, can you get Emma out,” Dani said to Kevin as he got out of the car with his backpack that was a carry on.
“Yes, that is what I am doing,” Kevin said to his wife who was helping the car driver get everything out of the car.
“Come on Emma,” Kevin said as he got her unstrapped from her car seat and held her in his arms. An attendant was already there with a luggage cart for them to put everything on. “Okay, Emma can you stand right here,” Kevin asked the little girl as he sat her down on the ground, while he helped to unload the rest of the bags.
“Daddy, what are we doing here?” Emma said as she rubbed her eyes and yawned. She was still waking up from her nap.
“We are going to take a plane and go see Grandpapa and Glammy,” Kevin said as he went in the car and unattached the car seat from the back of the car and put it on the luggage cart.
They checked all of their bags and themselves into the airport including the car seat which had now been packed away into a car seat bag with wheels, made easier for traveling.
“Emma, do you have to go potty, before we get on the plane,” Dani asked Emma. They were waiting at the gate and had about fifteen minutes before first class would start boarding. Emma nodded her head as Dani stood up and grabbed her purse and carry-on.
“Also, when you get back, I am going to head to the bathroom too before we board,” Kevin said as Dani nodded her head. Emma and Dani walked to the nearest bathroom.
“Come on Emma,” Dani said as she pulled down her pants. Dani sat Emma on the toilet, and she did her business. Dani then helped Emma change into her pink underwear that they had brought with them. “Emma, Mommy has to go potty too, and then we will get on the plane,” Dani said.
They were on the plane about ten minutes later. “Emma you get to sit by the window,” Dani said when they got on the plane. Emma started crying as soon as she sat down. She didn’t like the window seat.
“Emma what’s wrong?” Dani said as she sat down by her on the plane and hugged her.
“I want to sit by both Mommy and Daddy,” Emma cried out.
“Emma, I think you will really like the window seat,” Dani said to the little girl who was now shaking in her arms.
“Okay honey, you can sit in the middle of us okay,” Dani said as she switched places with Emma. “Is that better Emma?” Emma just nodded her little head as she wrapped her arms around her little chest.
Once the plane was loaded and they started moving, Emma started crying and freaking out. “Shhh Emma,” Dani said as Emma leaned into her sobbing.
“It’s okay Emma,” Dani kept on saying as the plane was going up. Once it was up in the air for a couple of minutes, Emma started crying again.
“Daddy,” Emma sobbed as she leaned into him and sobbed.
“Emma, shhh,” Kevin said as he tried to get her to calm down.
“Daddy, my tummy is hurting,” Emma said.
“Oh Emma, do you have to go poops?” Kevin said using Emma’s word for when she had to go potty. Emma just shook her head.
“Emma does it feel like you are going to throw up?” Kevin asked next. Emma nodded her head a little bit as she turned pale green. Kevin leaned over and grabbed the puke bag and held it open in front of her mouth just in time for her to throw up the cereal that she had ate that morning.
“Oh Emma,” Kevin said as she coughed and vomited in the half full bag one more time. “Are you done honey,” Kevin asked the little girl who nodded her head a little bit and started crying.
“Daddy, my tummy still hurts though,” Emma sobbed.
“Emma, shhh,” Kevin said as he grabbed another puke bag and pressed the cabin light and flight attendant button right before Emma had puked all over the back of the seat in front of her. Nothing had gotten on her surprisingly though.
This went on for most of the five-hour flight. Thankfully, the cabin crew was very nice in helping and they got them extra supplies and they helped with whatever they needed. Emma finally fell asleep on Dani about a half an hour before the plane was due to land.
“I wish she didn’t have to get sick,” Dani said as she looked down at the sleeping little girl who was now cuddled into her side.
“Yea, at least the plane ride is almost done, and she is sleeping at least,” Kevin said as the pilot came across the loudspeaker and said that they were landing and to put your seats back up into the upright position and put tray tables away, etc.
The plane landed in the Dallas, Texas airport about twenty minutes later. Emma had woken up right when the plane was landing. “Emma let’s get off of the plane,” Dani said as she pushed her into the aisle so she could start making her way to the door.
Kevin was following Emma off of the plane. He made sure to apologize to the flight attendant crew, because his daughter had made such a mess. They had tried to clean it up as best as they could, but it still needed some deep cleaning. He also thanked them a bunch too, because they were so good at helping them get bigger bags, and whatever else they needed.
“Are you feeling better honey,” Kevin said as he got down in front of her. Emma nodded her head a little bit and then ran into her father’s arms.
“Come on sweetie, we have to go get our luggage and then we will go see Grandpapa and Glammy,” Kevin said as he stood up and grabbed onto Emma’s hand.
When they got in the car, Kevin texted his mom and told them they had landed and were on their way. The half an hour drive to Kevin’s parent’s house was quiet. Emma had fallen asleep again, for the third time today. These past couple of weeks they had such a hard time getting Emma to wake up, all she wanted to do was sleep, and sleep more. Emma loved to sleep before these past couple of weeks, so they hadn’t really seen that much of a change in her other than it had been harder to get her to wake up.
Emma woke up right when they were turning into the driveway. “Do we get to see Glammy and Grandpapa now,” Emma asked as she looked around and saw that the car had just stopped in the driveway.
“Emma, can you take your bag please,” Dani asked the little girl who was standing by the car still looking tired. She nodded as Dani handed her the little pink backpack.
“Hi Glammy,” Emma said as she gave her a big hug. She let her parents do most of the talking, standing in front of her parents. When she opened her mouth to tell her Mom that she didn’t feel good again, she coughed a little bit and threw up all over the floor.
“Oh Emma,” Denise said as she rushed into the kitchen to get some towels to wipe up the vomit. “Mommy,” Emma cried as she coughed a little bit and threw up again all over the floor.
“Oh honey,” Dani said as she rubbed the little girls back.
“Uh Mom, we need a bucket in here,” Kevin said as Emma threw up all over the floor and herself once again.
“Here you are honey,” Denise said as she got the bucket under her mouth just in time for her to throw up again.
“Oh sweetie,” Denise said as she rubbed the little girls back.
“Mommy,” Emma cried out for her Mom.
“I am right here honey,” Dani said as she also rubbed the little girls back.
“Are you done honey,” Dani said as she rubbed the little girls back as she sputtered and coughed some more right before a big mouthful came up.
“Poor thing, I hope she feels better soon,” Denise said as she felt the little girl’s head. “Well, she doesn’t have a fever, so that is a good sign,” Denise said. “Let’s hope it is just a little tummy bug.”
“Yea she threw up the whole way here on the plane too,” Kevin sighed.
“Emma do you want to go get cleaned up,” Dani asked the little girl when she was done throwing up. Emma nodded her head as she ran into her mom crying a little bit.
“Come on let’s go upstairs and do a bath,” Dani asked the little girl who nodded her head. When Dani went to stand up, she put her arms up indicating that she wanted Dani to carry her. Dani picked up the little girl who just laid her head on her Mom’s shoulder.
“Come on honey, let’s go potty and then we will take a bath,” Dani said as she sat Emma on the floor and opened the toilet lid. She then took down her pants and sat her on the toilet.
She then started filling up the tub with warm water. Once the tub was filled, Dani turned to Emma. “Emma Bug are you ready for your bath,” Dani said as she lifted Emma off of the toilet. Dani then grabbed some toilet paper and wiped her little bottom. She helped her take off her shirt and then she lifted her into the tub.
They were about halfway through the bath when Emma started coughing. Dani thought that she was going to be sick again, but all she did was cough. Not little light coughs, more like big deep coughs. It concerned Dani for a moment, but as soon as it started, it stopped.
“Come here Emma, let’s get out of the tub,” Dani said as Emma looked at Dani. She was so tired; it was almost like she was ready to go to bed again. This concerned Dani for a moment, but then she realized that she was sick and that she was probably tired.
After she got Emma dried off, she tried to help her put on clothes when Emma started crying again. “Emma, what is wrong?” Dani asked the little girl.
“I want Daddy shirt,” Emma cried as she stood there shivering from being so cold. She had refused to get dressed.
“Here, why don’t we put on some underwear and pants and this shirt for now,” Dani said as she held up a purple pajama shirt that had butterflies on it.
“No, I want Daddy shirt,” Emma cried as she looked at the clothes that her Mom had in her hand.
“Here why don’t we put on some underwear and pants,” Dani said in hopes of getting the crying little girl to put on her shirt.
“Socks too,” Emma said as she shivered.
“Yea, I have your socks right here Emma,” Dani said as she put some socks on her feet.
“I want Daddy shirt,” Emma started crying after she had her pants and socks on.
“Emma, how about we put this shirt on and then we will go downstairs and talk to Daddy,” Dani said as she tried to get her to put the purple pajama shirt that she had in her hands over her head.
“No Daddy shirt,” Emma cried.
After Emma was done with her bath and dressed again, they went downstairs. “Daddy,” Emma cried as she ran at him. His mom had food out for them to eat, so he was eating a radish.
“Emma, are you all cleaned up?” Kevin asked as he noticed that she was in new clothes and her hair had been washed.
“I want Daddy shirt,” Emma cried as she climbed up onto his lap and started having another coughing fit. Kevin, Dani, and Denise all exchanged a worried glance as the coughing fit stopped as quickly as it had started.
“She has been asking ever since she got out of the bath,” Dani said as she came and sat down by Kevin and rubbed the little girls back.
“Come on Emma, let’s go find a Daddy shirt,” Kevin said as he stood up with her in his arms and walked out of the kitchen and through the living room where Emma started coughing again.
“Emma,” Kevin said as he rubbed her little back as she turned pale green once again today. Kevin found a bucket sitting on the couch from earlier that he grabbed and held under her mouth just in time for her to throw up.
“Oh sweetie,” Kevin said as he sat down on the couch and rubbed her back while she continued to throw up.
“I want Daddy shirt,” Emma cried after she was done throwing up.
“Come on let’s go find one of Daddy’s shirts,” Kevin said to the little girl who was crying in his arms. When they got upstairs Kevin sat Emma down on the bed while he went over and looked in the suitcase to which he pulled out three different shirts that she could wear.
“Emma, which one do you want,” Kevin asked the little girl who shook her head and started crying.
“I want Daddy shirt,” Emma cried as she ran to the suitcase and started tearing through it. When she couldn’t find the shirt that she wanted she just stood there and cried.
“Emma, what shirt do you want?” Kevin said as he sat down beside her on the floor.
“I want Daddy shirt,” Emma cried as she sat down on the floor and looked at the suitcase. “It’s not here,” Emma said through her little sobs. This was when Kevin realized what shirt she wanted.
“Emma, do you want the shirt from the first night you were with Mommy and Daddy,” Kevin asked the little girl who nodded her head as she sniffled.
“Emma, Daddy didn’t bring that shirt,” Kevin said as she looked at Kevin with an ‘I already realized that’ look on her face.
“Daddy,” Emma said as she sat on her Dad’s lap and just cried until she started coughing again.
“Emma, here is the bucket,” Kevin said as he held the bucket up by her mouth in case she needed to vomit. Emma coughed a couple more times before a mouthful of vomit came out of her mouth and into the bucket. This is when Emma started having diarrhea.
“Oh honey,” Kevin said as he rubbed the little girls back as she continued to vomit and have diarrhea at the same time.
“Daddy,” Emma cried when she was finally done throwing up.
“Oh, Emma Bear,” Kevin said as Emma just laid in his lap and cried.
“Daddy, I don’t like being sick,” Emma cried into her Dad’s chest.
“I know you don’t Emma, but let’s get you all cleaned up,” Kevin said as Emma nodded her head.
“Emma, sit here while Daddy goes and gets you some clean clothes,” Kevin said as he sat Emma on the toilet for her to do her business. He started the water and put some bubbles in it to make it more fun for Emma.
Kevin left the bathroom and went into the bedroom and got some clean pajamas for her and a pull-up, just in case she had diarrhea again. He came back to the room to find Emma sitting there crying.
“Oh honey, I know you don’t feel good,” Kevin said as he rubbed her back as she cried.
“Are you done honey?” Kevin asked his daughter as she nodded her head and sniffled a little bit.
“Okay Emma, let’s get you in the bath, how does that sound?” Kevin asked the little girl who was still sitting on the toilet.
“Daddy shirt,” Emma cried. She really wanted her Dad’s shirt right now. It had to be the specific one that she wore on the first night she came to live with her Mommy and Daddy.
“Daddy is going to call Ziti and Uncle B and see if one of them can send Daddy’s shirt to us,” Kevin said as Emma nodded her head.
“When is it going to be here,” Emma asked as she looked like she was about to cry again.
“Emma, it should be here tomorrow,” Kevin said as Emma started crying.
“Oh honey, shhh,” Kevin said as he rubbed the little girls back.
“Come on let’s get you in the bath,” Kevin said as he helped her stand up. “Oh honey,” Kevin said as he noticed that Emma had diarrhea again.
“Come on we will do this quick and then Daddy promises to call Zia Dina and Uncle B and ask them to send the shirt in the mail for you, okay,” Kevin asked as he helped Emma into the tub. Five minutes later, Kevin was helping Emma out of the tub and was wrapping her in a fluffy bath towel to keep her nice and warm.
“Come on Emma, let’s get you in some warm comfy pajamas and then I am sure you can ask Glammy and Grandpapa if you can lay on the couch downstairs and watch TV,” Kevin said as he helped her put on her pullup and pants.
“Daddy are you and Mommy and going to get mad at me if I use my pullup,” Emma asked her Dad very curiously.
“No Mommy and Daddy won’t get mad at you, but it is only because you are sick, once you are done being sick and if you use it you will get in trouble,” Kevin said as Emma nodded.
“I’m cold Daddy,” Emma said as she shivered.
“I know Daddy has a shirt right here for you,” Kevin said as he put the shirt over her head.
“Daddy shirt tomorrow in mail from Uncle B and Ziti?” Emma clarified.
“Yep, that is right, Daddy will call them right now okay,” Kevin said as Emma nodded.
“Where is Mommy?” Emma asked as she waited for her Dad to stand up.
“Mommy is downstairs talking with Glammy and Grandpapa,” Kevin said as Emma put her arms up for him to carry her.
“Come here Emma,” Kevin said as picked her up and carried her downstairs to where Dani, Denise, and Paul were hanging out in the kitchen.
“Grandpapa,” Emma squealed when she saw her grandfather sitting by her mother.
“Hi Emma, I heard you weren’t feeling the best,” Paul said as Emma shook her head and snuggled into her father once more.
“Daddy shirt,” Emma said as she started crying once again.
“Yea, Daddy is going to call Zia Dina and Uncle B and see if they can ship Daddy’s shirt to you,” Kevin said as Emma nodded her head and then leaned her head into his chest and stuck her thumb in her mouth.
“Emma, do you want to stay here with Mommy, Glammy and Grandpapa while Daddy calls Ziti and Uncle B or do you want to go to the couch,” Kevin asked his daughter.
“Mommy,” Emma said as she reached out for her mother who was sitting on a bar stool eating a cracker with some cheese. Dani took her from Kevin and let her snuggle into her.
“Mommy, I sleepy,” Emma said as she closed her eyes and snuggled into Dani some more. Emma was sound asleep in no time.
“Here I will take her to the couch,” Paul said as he stood up and lifted his granddaughter into his arms. He then walked over to the living room and laid her down on the couch. He covered her up and before leaving he gave her a light kiss on the forehead.
“I hope she starts feeling better soon,” Paul said as he came back into the kitchen and sat down at the counter.
“Yea me too,” Dani sighed as she got up off of the stool and went into the living room to check on Emma.
