Denise had been sleeping soundly for a couple of hours. “Hallie,” Denise called out for her, as she got out of bed and put on a robe that she kept by her bed. She kept on calling for her name, as she made her way out of her room and down to the guest room that Hallie was staying in.
“No, stop,” Hallie was screaming in her sleep, as she was thrashing around on the bed.
“Hallie honey,” Denise said as she got on the bed with her and held on to her tight and waited for her to wake up. It was her motherly instinct to help this young girl out.
“Ahh,” Hallie screamed as she woke up in a startle.
“Shhh, it’s okay, I am right here,” Denise said, as she brushed her hands through her hair.
“Sorry,” Hallie said, she was sweating and out of breath.
“It’s okay honey,” Denise said. Denise knew from when her husband was a minister, she had done some work at a woman’s shelter, that she shouldn’t push her to talk.
“Whenever I screamed and yelled out before, my parents would come into my room and kick me into a wall,” Hallie said quietly, as she looked down at the bed and played with the sheets.
“Oh honey, I am so sorry about whatever happened to you,” Denise said.
“I tried not to yell and scream out in the middle of the night, I am so sorry,” Hallie said quietly.
“There is nothing to be sorry about honey,” Denise said.
“Thank you for being so nice to me,” Hallie said.
“You are welcome honey,” Denise yawned. “It is the middle of the night, let’s try to get some sleep, okay sweetie.”
“Okay,” Hallie quietly said.
After Denise had left to go back to her own room and own bed, Hallie dozed off. The next thing she knew, Denise was coming into her room to wake her up for breakfast.
“Hallie honey,” Denise said as she sat down on the edge of the bed and brushed her hands through Hallie’s long red hair.
“Hi,” Hallie’s eyes fluttered open.
“Hi sleepy head, I have some breakfast ready for you downstairs if you want it,” Denise said.
“Thank you,” Hallie said, as she yawned, she then looked at the clock and saw that it was already 10:30am.
“Sorry for sleeping so late, I didn’t mean too,” Hallie said as she scrambled out of bed.
“Don’t worry about it, I will be downstairs when you are ready for breakfast, okay,” Denise said.
“Thank you,” Hallie said. Hallie quickly went to the bathroom after having the feeling that she needed to poop once again. Hallie seemed to have made it this time, but last night some time she seemed to have pooped, because it was in her underwear and the nice pajama pants that Denise had given her to wear.
“Uh what do I do, what do I do,” Hallie mumbled to herself as she sat on the toilet and pooped. When she was done pooping, she peed and then wiped herself. Hallie got as much poop out of her pants and underwear as possible, before heading downstairs, she just hoped that Denise didn’t notice a smell. She also really hoped that she didn’t have any stains.
While Hallie was freaking out in the bathroom, Denise was in the guest bedroom and was going to make the bed for the young girl. Denise thought she had smelled something when she was getting out of bed but wasn’t sure. Denise was correct though, when she pulled down the sheets and blankets to make the bed, she noticed a brown stain right there on the sheets.
“Hi,” Hallie said when she came out of the bathroom and saw Denise still in her bedroom.
“Oh, hi honey, I am going to throw these in the wash, and I will meet you in the kitchen, you remember how to get there?” Denise asked Hallie, as the young girl started sobbing.
“I am so sorry, I really didn’t mean too, I am so sorry,” Hallie said through her sobs.
“Hallie, there is nothing to be sorry about,” Denise said as she put down the sheets on the floor, sat down on the bed, and patted the bed for Hallie to come sit next to her.
“But I am so embarrassed, I come here looking like a slob, and poop in your bed, and you have been so nice to me, I just don’t deserve it,” Hallie said as she wiped her eyes.
“Oh honey, it’s okay, don’t worry about it, the sheets can be washed, and you aren’t a slob,” Denise said, as she gave her a hug.
“I am so sorry,” Hallie sniffled.
“Hey, don’t worry about it, Hallie, it is 100% okay,” Denise said.
“No one has ever treated me as nice as you have, thank you,” Hallie said.
“How about this, how about you go get cleaned up, and I will meet you downstairs and will get you some breakfast, you remember how to get downstairs, honey,” Denise said.
“Yea, thank you again,” Hallie said, as Denise stood up and took the sheets downstairs to the laundry room, so she could do a load of laundry and wash the sheets.
Meanwhile, Hallie hopped into the shower again and got cleaned up for the second time since she had come last night. It felt so good to take showers, after years of not being able to shower, it felt so nice and refreshing. Although, she still wasn’t sure how long they would be nice to her for. Her parents turned mean on her after a while, and she didn’t want to take any chances.
When she was out of the shower, Denise had set some nice clean clothes for her on the bed that she had stayed in last night. Hallie grabbed the clothes and went back into the bathroom, where she dropped her towel and put on the clean clothes.
“Hi Hallie, I want to introduce you to my husband,” Denise said as Hallie very shyly came into the kitchen.
“Hi, you were at the restaurant last night,” Hallie very quietly said.
“Yes, I was, my name is Paul,” Paul said as he introduced himself.
“Hi, I am Hallie,” Hallie very quietly said, as she stood in the kitchen, unsure where to sit.
“Hi Hallie, why don’t you come sit down,” Paul said, as to make Hallie feel comfortable at their table. Hallie sat down by Paul, as Denise went around the kitchen making breakfast.
“So, Hallie, what do you want for breakfast? I can make you some toast, eggs, pancakes, waffles, or we have cereal,” Denise said.
“I will just have whatever is easiest for you,” Hallie said, as she looked down at the table.
“Are eggs okay, I am making them for Paul and myself?” Denise asked.
“Yea, they are fine,” Hallie quietly said, as she continued to look down at the table. Hallie knew that she shouldn’t be eating any food and that Denise, and her husband shouldn’t have let her sleep in a bed or let her take a shower.
“Hallie what do you say, after breakfast we take you shopping for some new clothes and other stuff that you might need, our treat,” Denise said, as she looked at Hallie who wasn’t really eating her eggs, she was more just moving them around on her plate.
“You don’t have to, I should probably not even be here,” Hallie said quietly as tears started running down her face. She had nowhere else to go and was scared.
“Oh honey,” Denise said, as she got up from her chair and came over to where Hallie was sitting.
“I don’t have anywhere to go, but I know that if my parents find me it’s going to be bad,” Hallie said through her tears, as Denise looked at Paul. Here this girl was, she was very thin and looked like she had been through everything possible and probably even more.
“Hallie, you can stay here for as long as you would like, okay, we will keep you safe,” Paul said, as he touched her hand.
“Thank you,” Hallie said tears still dripping down her face, “but I can’t do that to you guys. You have both been so nice to me, but I really can’t stay here, what if my parents come and find me.”
“Hallie honey, what is it with you parents, were they abusive to you?” Paul asked the girl who was in their kitchen that he had just met last night.
“Yea, they were really mean to me, they yelled at me, hit me, kicked me and refused to let me eat,” Hallie said through her tears. “I had to hide everything from them for the past four and a half years. Every morning was a disaster to wake up too, it’s like a never ending,
nightmare. I was always scared for my life.”
“Oh gosh honey, I am so sorry,” Denise said as she gave her a hug. Here there was this 12-year-old girl that had to really grow up and quickly, when she should be enjoying her youth and not have to grow up this quick.
“Hallie how long did the abuse go on?” Paul asked.
“I don’t know, when my parents won the lottery, they became greedy and kept all of the money for themselves. Shortly after that became alcoholics and then eventually addicted to drugs. After they were addicted to drugs that is when the physical abuse started. Before that, it was just them yelling at me a lot, but nothing physical, but once the drugs started, they became physical,” Hallie said through her sobs.
“Oh honey,” Denise said as she hugged Hallie with tears in her eyes.
Denise had no clue how anyone could get through something like what Hallie had just told her and her husband, but she was sure glad that she did get through it. “How did you get here from Wisconsin honey?” Denise asked her.
“I biked from my house in Wisconsin to the train station in Chicago a couple of nights ago and I didn’t really know where I was going, just that I had to get out of the Midwest and far away. I looked at the soonest train leaving, and Charlotte was the earliest train leaving. So, I picked that train and then when I got here, I biked until I found the restaurant. Then you guys know the rest,” Hallie said quietly.
“Oh gosh, well you are very brave honey,” Denise said, as she looked over at her husband.
“Well thank you,” Hallie said, as she moved the eggs around on her plate. Hallie didn’t like eggs at all, so she didn’t really know why she had said okay to them.
“Why don’t you eat and then we will go shopping, how does that sound?” Denise said to Hallie who didn’t seem like she wanted to talk anymore at least right now. Hallie however continued moving the eggs around on her plate and just shrugged her shoulders as tears continued streaming down her face.
“Oh Hallie,” Denise said as she hugged this young girl again.
“You guys have been so nice to me and I don’t deserve it,” Hallie said as tears streamed down her face.
“Hallie, of course you deserve someone to be nice to you, everyone deserves someone who is nice to them, and you have had a rough time, so you can stay here for as long as you want and we will keep you safe,” Paul said.
“Well thank you,” Hallie sniffled as tears continued streaming down her face.
“Now do you want to eat anymore or are you done?” Denise said. She had noticed that Hallie hadn’t ate anything and was just moving her eggs around on the plate.
“Yea, I am done,” Hallie said quietly. “Sorry, I didn’t eat anything. I don’t really like eggs.”
“That is okay honey, do you want me to make you something else, I can make you some toast or a bowl of cereal.”
“No, I am fine,” Hallie said quietly as her stomach started rumbling, just like it had done last night.
“Honey, I think that means you are hungry, so do you want cereal or toast,” Denise said. She was not letting this girl go hungry.
“Uh toast is fine, if it isn’t too much of a hassle,” Hallie said.
“No, it isn’t too much, here what do you want on it, I have some jelly or butter,” Denise said.
“Butter is fine,” Hallie said quietly, as she got major cramping in her stomach once again. She knew she was about to have one of her pooping episodes. Before Hallie could do anything or get up to head to a bathroom, she had started pooping all over Denise’s nice white leather chair. Hallie tried to squeeze her butt cheeks together so that no poop would make its way out, but she didn’t really have any luck and ended up pooping all over the nice chair.
“Hallie are you okay honey?” Paul asked. Hallie was just staring into space not doing anything and there was suddenly, a strong smell coming from somewhere in the room.
“I am so sorry, I will clean it up, I promise, don’t hit me, please don’t hit me,” Hallie said, as tears started dripping down her face.
“Now, why would either one of us hit you,” Denise said shocked that she would ask to not be hit.
“Because I deserve it, I deserve to be hit and kicked and punched and tied up and thrown in a corner, that is what I deserve,” Hallie sobbed.
“Oh honey, did that ever happen to you,” Paul asked carefully.
“Yea, please I don’t want to get in trouble, I am so sorry,” Hallie sobbed.
“Shhh,” Denise soothed the young girl in her arms, as she looked over at Paul.
“I am sorry,” Hallie said once she had calmed down. She still had tears dripping down her face though, but she was not upset anymore.
“Why don’t you go get cleaned up and then we will go shopping, how does that sound honey?” Denise asked Hallie.
“Yea, that sounds good,” Hallie said, as she wiped her face with her hands and went upstairs to the bedroom where she had stayed last night.
Hallie was so incredibly embarrassed. Since she had been here, she had pooped in the car on the way home, in the nice bed last night and now on one of Denise’s nice white chairs. She hated how she was not able to control her bowels anymore. She used to be able to, but it has not been for a while. Hallie jumped in the shower for the third time since she had been here and quickly cleaned up her bottom. She did not wash her hair or do the rest of her body. She just did her bottom.
In the kitchen, Denise was cleaning up from breakfast and from Hallie. “Paul, this is the third time since she has gotten here,” Denise said, while she was cleaning up Hallie’s accident.
“What?” Paul said as he looked up from his newspaper.
“This is the third time she has had an accident since last night, she has barely been here twelve hours, her digestive track must be so messed up right now,” Denise said, as she sprayed some cleaner on the chair.
“Poor thing,” Paul said.
“Well, I am going to take her shopping today for some things she might need, she has nothing, only a small backpack,” Denise said.
“Good idea, I think that shopping will be good for her,” Paul said.
“Yea, I just hope that we can help her somehow,” Denise said, she had already told the girl that she could stay here for as long as she wanted too, but she hoped that she could help her in other ways too.
“I am sure that we will be able to help her, if all she needs is somewhere to crash for a couple of days, then that is fine, if she needs longer than that is fine also,” Paul said, not really knowing what he was getting himself into.
“Yea, I am going to go check on her and see if she is ready for shopping yet,” Denise said as she finished wiping down the counter.
“Okay, I am going to go get in the shower and then head over to the restaurant,” Paul said.
“Okay, we should be back by dinner time,” Denise said as she gave her husband a kiss before heading upstairs to see if Hallie was ready to go yet or not.
“Hallie,” Denise said as she knocked on the bedroom door, when she did not get an answer, she slowly opened the door to find Hallie laying on the bed sobbing.
“Hallie, what’s wrong honey?” Denise said as she walked over to the bed.
“What if they find me,” Hallie sobbed, she was still in her towel, she had not gotten dressed after the shower.
“Oh honey, do they know where you are?” Denise asked.
“Well, they know by now that I am gone, but they don’t know where I am exactly,” Hallie sniffled a little bit.
“Well, it’s good that they don’t know where you are exactly,” Denise said as she rubbed the young girls back.
“I just know if they find me, it’s going to be bad,” Hallie said, as tears ran down her face.
“Well Paul and I will make sure that doesn’t happen, you can stay here and live with us for as long as you need to honey,” Denise said, as she smoothed out the girl’s hair on her head.
“Thank you,” Hallie sniffled.
“Why don’t you go get dressed and we will go shopping for some stuff for you,” Denise said.
“I don’t have any clothes,” Hallie said quietly. She most definitely had no undies or pants, they were both full of poop, and her sweatshirt had gotten some poop on it this last episode.
“Well, that is okay, I will go get you some clothes that you can borrow for now,” Denise said, as she sat up. “I will be right back, okay honey.”
“Thank you,” Hallie said, as she nodded.
Denise came back with some of her youngest son’s old clothes, she grabbed a sweatshirt and some more sweatpants. Denise and Hallie were out of the door a couple minutes later.
“So, I was thinking that we could go to the mall first and get you some clothes and by the time we are done with that, we will stop by and pick something up for dinner for the three of us. How does that sound?” Denise asked Hallie as they drove in the direction of the mall.
“That sounds good,” Hallie said quietly as she played with her hands, she was so nervous and anxious. The last thing she wanted was for her parents to come find her.
