Chapter 5

It has been a month since the incident at the convenient store. Life for Amber has been hard. She left the hospital after a week. Her dad stayed in New York for two weeks to take care of her, although she insists he goes home or take the chance of getting fired. She loved having her dad around, it felt like home again but moving to New York was her chance of having some space and the accident that fell upon her gave her no chance to escape from him.

School had been extra difficult. She took two weeks off and was way behind schedule. She missed an assignment, taking off 5% from her overall final result. Amber knew this meant she had to work twice as hard as anyone else in her course did. The doctor had advised Amber to take care off her shoulder and not do any heavy lifting for two months. She would have to attend physiotherapy for two months and see how things go from there. Even lifting a paintbrush up to paint was hard for Amber. She was constantly frustrated and let her anger out on drawing sketches and clothing designs. Her whole living room is scattered with used papers.

“Hello.” Amber’s cell phone rang and she answered with a plain hello. She was busy looking for a piece of her sketch that she had to hand in to her lecturer today, but with all the papers lying around, she could not find it.

“Hi, Miss Amber Smith?” said a female voice on the other line.

            “Yes?” Amber’s voice was curious.

“Hi this is Joanne Clark, calling from Harpo Productions.”

“Oh no.” Amber said annoyed. “I’m sorry I don’t have time for this now.”

Ever since Amber left the hospital, she has been getting numerous calls from radio stations, TV stations and publishing magazines to get an interview with her. A playing factor on why they wanted her so badly to talk to the media was because she was held captive in a room for almost an hour with teen pop sensation, Joe Jonas. Amber had no idea his band; The Jonas Brothers were so popular in America and everywhere else. She had to ‘Google’ him to find out the hype about Joe.

However, Amber declined every single interview except for New York Post and that was only because she had no choice. They managed to find out where she was living and ambushed her while she was returning to her apartment from school. The reporter mostly asked her about how she felt but included a question about what she thought about Joe Jonas. “Joe Jonas, Nice Guy!” that was the title of the article that was published in New York Post together with a picture of her smiling awkwardly when asked to pose for the camera.

Amber did not want to speak to the media about what happened because she wanted to just forget about that day. She didn’t read the papers about a week because she didn’t want to stumble upon an article about the guy who shot her. She didn’t even know his name and didn’t want to. All she wanted was to forget about what happened. Now every time she hears a loud thump or bang, it will remind her of what had happened. She did not want to wake up every morning remembering she almost died; she already had the bullet scar to remind her.

“Miss Smith, I’m calling on behalf of Oprah.” Joanne said confidently knowing that she can now get Amber’s attention.

There is only one woman in the whole universe where you can say her first name and instantly know who that is.

And that is Oprah Winfrey, who hosts the highest-rated talk show in American television history. Her show, ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ is currently the longest-running daytime television talk show in the United States. She is also the richest women in the world.

Amber loves watching ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ and she has always dreamed of being in the show one day. However, she never thought she would be a guest on the show because of a dramatic accident, she thought she would be premiering her fashion line or talk about her traveling the world and meeting all the famous designers and photographers.

“Oprah as in, Oprah Winfrey?” Amber knew the answer but she just wanted to make it clear that this was not a fraud.

“Yes. We know you’ve been avoiding all interviews to talk about what happened on the 6th of January, but Oprah would really love to be the first to have the chance to talk to you.” Joanne explained.

“Wow. I’m honored.” Amber said flabbergasted. Then she realized she just sounded like she was star struck and perhaps giving in to her. It was never in Amber’s nature to act as if she was a child; she always portrayed a calm and cool attitude. Her close friends back in Kentwood calls her ‘Coolio’ because she hardly smiles and always listens to rock music or sappy love song. This was due to her upbringing as an only child and lived without her mother. Her mom was her best friend and she lost her, it was a hole in her heart no one could replace.

“And you should be.” Joanne said, now sounding cockier and even more confident that she could be the first to get an interview out off her.

She is probably right.

“We’d like you to come to our studio in Chicago for an in-depth interview for Oprah’s talk show.” Joanne explained. “I’m hoping you could fly down on the 12th of February.”

“What? That’s… this Tuesday.” Amber said, looking at the calendar on the wall. She could not leave this coming Tuesday; she has classes and loads of assignment to finish. Today is Friday and this means she only had 3 days to prepare herself. Amber thought that was virtually impossible.

“Yes it is.”

“I’m sorry but I don’t think I can make it, I have school and I can’t miss it.”

“Owh.” Joanne said, the sound of rummaging papers could be heard on the line.

“You study in A.I.N.Y.C.?”

Amber was surprised she knew that.

“Yes I do.”

“Well, I’m sure we here, at Harpo can work something out. You’ll be informed by your lecturer soon.”

“I don’t think-”

“I think, this will be a good chance for you to tell the world about your experience. Joe Jonas had already agreed to do the interview together with you and Oprah will not take no for an answer.” Joanne stressed.

Joe Jonas? Amber thought. She had not thought much about him since she left the hospital. When Joanne mentioned his name, the image of him started flashing through her mind and the scene of him kissing her was like a movie that won’t stop playing. She was actually excited at the idea of seeing him again.

“Hello?” Joanne wondered if Amber was still on the line after a long silence.

“Yeah I’m here.” Amber said quickly after realizing she had been quiet.

“So I’ll see you this coming Monday. I’ll send all the information you need to your e-mail.”

“Okay. My e-mail is-”

“I have it, thanks! You take care now. Goodbye.” With that, Joanne hung up the phone.

“Okay….” Amber said to herself as she too pressed the red button on her cell phone.

She felt a weird sensation in her. She was nervous just thinking about the live show and meeting Oprah. She was also excited she is going to see Joe again. After all, he did give her her first kiss.
